It is the first and most definitive study of its kind. About the Author
Charles M. Jaksec III has served as a school social worker in The Hillsborough County School District for 21 years and has been a member of the district’s crisis intervention team for 18 years. He serves as the chairperson of the district’s Bullying Committee and is a member of the district’s Violence Prevention Committee. Jaksec is the author of The Difficult Parent: An Educator’s Guide to Handling Aggressive Behaviors (Corwin Press 2004) and The Confrontational Parent: A Practical Guide for School Leaders (Eye On Education, Inc. 2003). He speaks nationally and locally on the topics of school crisis intervention and parental aggression. Jaksec has a master’s degree in counseling services from Slippery Rock University, and an educational specialist degree in counselor education and a doctorate in curriculum and instruction from the University of South Florida.

Easy To Read and Understand

Research, it is safe to say, is probably not the average person's favorite course to take in school. The subject itself, for most, is bland and boring and probably not very accessible from a learning standpoint.
Enter Leedy and Omrod. "Practical Research" is just an outstanding book to learn research from or to teach a research course with. First off, the book is small and it is written in simple language with "practical" examples. This makes the subject a lot more accessible to the average reader. Second, it contains lots of helpful hints and checklists to help make the learning process easier. The companion website for this book contains practice tests that the students can use to gauge their learning (as well as e-mail results to get feedback from the instructor).
Though the book is short, it is still very thorough and to the point. There is no tradeoff in quality of information for brevity which is a great point in favor of this book. Overall, this book is a superior learning tool because it communicates the research process very clearly. A student at any level, be it, middle school, secondary school, undergraduate or graduate, can easily learn the research process from this text.
We used this as one of the texts for a graduate level research methods course I took and it was a big hit with all enrolled in the class.

Poorly Updated

This is a required text for a class I am taking, but I have found it to be a poorly updated 9th Edition of a book. The first chapter gives such basic information about email, computers and the internet, that you would think the internet was just invented. Shame on the author and publishers for selling a book originally published in 1993 with very little work put in to making it relevant and current in its 9th Edition. For any aspiring or out of work authors, perhaps here is an opportunity to write your own book with a little more effort, which can be much more useful for today.

Beware - does not work!

This access card never worked and I had to return it for a refund. From working with both Amazon and the text's company, I was finally told that I should be wary of purchasing access cards from third-parties. Apparently the version this was is not an official publication from the publisher, so they could never get it to work. So - beware if you purchase this!

The key finding is that two factors were found to be fundamental to successful implementation: (1) authoritative, accountable leadership; and (2) identifying and addressing the main resisters to change. Many other factors were found to be important to some extent.
The book concludes that there is a need to acknowledge issues ‘below the surface’, including beliefs, values and power relationships in implementing policies. Innovation and creativity, along with local leadership, are important but on their own they are not enough to ensure successful implementation.
These findings have relevance for the implementation of nationally designed policies which are intended to be implemented across the country in an even-handed way.
