This basic text in aeronautics for students of aviation safety approaches the subject from the pilot’s rather than the engineer’s viewpoint, unlike most other books in the field. It explains, as simply as possible, the theory and practical application of aeronautical principles in terms that both professional and non-professional pilots can readily understand. The mathematics is restricted to the level of high school algebra and trigonometry, and is kept to the minimum required to illustrate applications of the basic concepts presented. The author has drawn his material from courses he has taught in Flying Safety over the past eighteen years. He has taught thousands of Air Force, Army, Navy and many foreign Air Force pilots. The vast majority of these students did not have an engineering background. The first two chapters cover the basic concepts of aerodynamic principles and the construction of the thrust-required curves. Chapter 3 expands these basic principles and applies them to both thrust-producing and power-producing aircraft. The causes of many slow-speed aircraft accidents are discussed in Chapter 4. Chapter 5 discusses the problems of takeoffs and landings and the accelerations encountered during these phases of flight. Chapter 6 covers maneuvering flight. Chapter 7 explores high-speed flight in the transonic and supersonic speed regions. Static and dynamic stability and control of aircraft are analyzed in Chapter 8. There are problems at the end of each chapter, with answers given at the back of the book. The basic philosophy underlying this clear text can be stated as follows: "Any well-coordinated, intelligent person can be taught to fly an airplane—but a basic understanding of the aerodynamic principles involved will help the pilot to be a safer operator and help avoid the pitfalls that often lead to disaster." To this end, the author applies the understanding method rather than the do-it-this-way-because-I-say-so method of learning that is so often used in flight training. Flight Theory and Aerodynamics is currently used as the basic text for the USAF Flying Safety Officer courses. It can be used by the U.S.N. This book is good and challenging

Used this as a textbook for an aerodynamics class in college. Currently working towards a B.S. in Aeronautics. This book is good and challenging; a great resource to a beginner's class in aerodynamics. I will warn buyers that some of the questions/answers are wrong, some of the pictures are hard to decipher, and personally, I'm not a fan of using English over the Metric system... Many of the issues are addressed in the third edition, but the Metric system is just a personal preference. Overall, a good buy (especially for the price).

Long on theory short on math

This is an alright book. It presents a number of aerodynamics theories in some pretty good ideas and the use of figures from earlier editions or the Aerodynamics for Naval Aviators book to help teach the concepts of how an airplane flies. Having to use this for an intro to aerodynamics, my biggest problem with this book is that they present a number of formulas. The do various proofs on these formulas on how to manipulate some basic physics formulas that describe the items like lift or drag or landing distance. This is all great just so you don't have to manipulate the formulas yourself to get to what you need to solve for. The two biggest downfalls on this book when used as a textbook in some college classes, is they don't show how these formulas are actually manipulated with actual figures. As well as there is no overall listing for formulas in either the index or as an appendix. So at times while taking tests and using the book, a student will have to sit there and flip through numerous chapters to find the exact flavor of the formula for the question being asked for in test period. I would say this that if the publisher or authors decided to redo this book, that it needs an appendix of all the formulas and definition of what the formulas are used for as well as a link to the chapter they are from. As well as including some more math concepts to show exactly how to work through some of these formulas so that a student can grasp the concepts while studying the chapters outside of lecture hours in a class or even on their own.

Just needed this book for class. It's fine and references easily. I gave it 5 stars because so far, all of the homework and online work has been right where it is supposed to be. That doesn't always happen.

Great resource

This is a great book, it contains most of what you need to know about operational amplifiers, starting from the basics to the inner workings of the device. May I say that probably what I find most appealing about this book are the "end of chapter" problems?, perhaps the best approach to end of chapter problems I've ever encountered in an electronics textbook, let me elaborate on that: Instead of just being mere academic circuits with no use, starting from chapter 1 you will find a great deal of useful real-life circuits, the author may ask you to derive the gain equation of the circuit or to prove circuit operation, or any other parameter, which in turn, help you understand how real life circuits work, or maybe even use the circuit you just solved in a real application. I guess that what im trying to say is that even if you will find basic drill excercises, you will also find problems which wont stay only on paper.

The book is somewhat pricey and the reason I gave it 4 stars rather than 5 is that on several occasions the author will just flash formulae at you with the tinniest ammount of information about where did all come from, I understand that the book would have been much thicker if every little nuance had to be written, but this forces you to constantly prove every equation, which is a good thing, however simple things that could be easily understood with a little more information become complicated and force you to spend several minutes trying to figure out how the author got to the formula. I make several notes at the bottom of the pages to save myself a lot of time if I ever have to go back and re-read a particular section.

That being said, the material is very well presented, and overall this is a must-have book for every EE interested on analog design.

Very good intermediate text for op amp design

This is a very good intermediate text for op amp design. Some acquaitance with op amps will be needed before reading this book because the learning curve is steep in the first chapter. However, the approach is thorough and professionally presented. The book is more than a cookbook. Furthermore, the book does not stop with the single op amp, but discusses the use of op amp(s) in circuits. The book is perfectly suited for prototyping the many circuits contained between its two covers. Since my interest was in instrumentation amplifiers, I decided to reduce the circuits of chapter 2 to practice. It was a real learning experience. I think chapter titles will further indicate the comprehensive nature of the book: (1) OA Fundamentals, (2) Circuits w/ Resistive Feedback, (3,4) Active Filter, (5) Static OA Limitations, (6) Dynamic OA Limitations, (7) Noise, (8) Stability, (9) Nonlinear Circuits, (10) Signal Generators, (11) Voltage References and Regulators, (12) D-A & A-D Converters, (13) Nonlinear Amplifiers & Phase-Locked Loops.

outstanding, encyclopedic treatise on op-amp ciruits

I found Franco's work to be as enthralling to read as it was complete and deep in coverage. Not since the immortal Huelsman and Allen (a work long ago "overcome by events") has such a titanic writing job been undertaken in the field of linear circuit and analog filter design. I would stop short of saying--as one reviewer did--that the book says "everything you could possibly want to know about analog design." This is a treasured addition to my library, even at $110.

About the Author

Laura Ingalls Wilder (1867–1957) was born in a log cabin in the Wisconsin woods. With her family, she pioneered throughout America’s heartland during the 1870s and 1880s, finally settling in Dakota Territory. She married Almanzo Wilder in 1885; their only daughter, Rose, was born the following year. The Wilders moved to Rocky Ridge Farm at Mansfield, Missouri, in 1894, where they established a permanent home. After years of farming, Laura wrote the first of her beloved Little House books in 1932. The nine Little House books are international classics. Her writings live on into the twenty-first century as America’s quintessential pioneer story.

Cherry Jones won the Tony� Award for best actress for both The Heiress and Doubt, and received two Tony� nominations for her work in A Moon for the Misbegotten and Our Country's Good; she can be seen in the films The Perfect Storm, Erin Brockovich, The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, and Cold Mountain.

About the Author

Klaus Kirsch was a main board director of Keller Group plc, responsible for operations in Continental Europe and overseas until his retirement in 2001, and served thereafter as adviser for the Group’s technical development. He has been involved with some fundamental breakthroughs in foundation engineering, notably the introduction of the vibro stone column technology in the United States, and was instrumental in the development of a new generation of depth vibrators. He has authored many papers and a book on vibratory deep compaction.

Alan Bell is a technical consultant to the Keller Group plc. He was managing director of Keller in the United Kingdom until 2009 and has had close involvement in ground improvement techniques and their development at both the national and international level for over 30 years, including the introduction of vibrated concrete columns to the United Kingdom. He has contributed to many technical publications and is a visiting professor at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow.

Strikes Gold

"Driving Miss Daisy" won the Pulitzer Prize and hooks you from the first speech. Miss Daisy is such a salty old lady who says exactly what she thinks without apology. I've seen Morgan Freeman's film performance as Hoke and can only imagine how good he must have been on stage in this character. Hoke who comes to be Miss Daisy's driver when she wrecks the car by backing into the neighbor's garage -- sideways -- is so calm. He never talks back to Miss Daisy, but he speaks his mind and then accepts whatever absurd opinion she presents.

The theme seems to be most highlighted in the sequence when they are caught in a traffic jam and realize that the local synagogue which Miss Daisy attends has been bombed. We realize that both Jews and Blacks were targets of Southern hatred; and they then share a subtle but common bond which registers despite Daisy's denials. When Daisy becomes stricken with dementia as she imagines she must find graded papers for her students when she has long been retired, it results in her heading to the nursing home. As the play progresses in a series of scenes, the characters age, winding up with Daisy in a nursing home at age 97 visited by an 85 year-old Hoke who is driven to the visit by Daisy's son Boolie. The play ends with Hoke feeding Daisy a piece of pumpkin pie.

"Driving Miss Daisy" is an excellent character piece. Alfred Uhry was about to give up writing when Daisy struck gold for him. It is an entrancing evening's entertainment both on the page and on the stage. Enjoy!

DRIVING MISS DAISY is the first of three plays writer Alfred Uhry wrote about the Jews living in 20th Century Atlanta. The play opened Off-Broadway with Dana Ivey as Miss Daisy and Morgan Freeman as her chauffeur Hoke--and proceeded to run an astonishing one thousand, one hundred ninety five performances, something unheard of for an Off-Broadway show, particularly a non-musical. In 1989 the play was translated to the screen, with Jessica Tandy as Miss Daisy and Freeman reprising his role as Hoke. The film was extremely popular with both critics and the public, received nine Academy Award nominations and won four: Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Makeup, and Best Adapted Screenplay. The play has remained extremely popular. In addition to a much lauded New York revival, the play has had two runs in London and remains a staple of regional, university, and community theatre.

Miss Daisy is an elderly but sharp Jewish woman residing in Atlanta of the segregated south of the late 1940s. After one car wreck too many, her son Boolie insists that she have a chauffeur and hires Hoke for the job--but Miss Daisy rejects this. For one thing, she is--as were many people of her era and class--prejudiced against black people; for another, she perceives in Hoke the end of her autonomy due to her own advancing age. But Hoke is equal to Miss Daisy. He eventually traps her into allowing him to drive for her when he notes that the money Miss Daisy's son has spent to hire him is going to waste. Miss Daisy is inevitably cranky; Hoke is inevitably careful to know his place; but as time passes a cautious sort of friendship springs up between them. Miss Daisy will ultimately recant her covert prejudices, Hoke will ultimately speak out frankly to her. But time passes. The characters--especially Miss Daisy, who prides herself on independence--experience the tragedy of growing older, and by the early 1970s, with Miss Daisy's mind failing, she at last realizes an unexpected fact: over the years Hoke has become her best friend.

The play is performed in a series of quick blackout sketches that move across the decades with great speed but which nonetheless give a glimse into the temper of the times: Hoke is of a generation when blacks were not taught to read; in an act of prejudice Miss Daisy's Temple is bombed, causing Hoke to remember a lynching seen in his childhood; Miss Daisy becomes enthusiastic about Martin Luther King while her son Boolie dare not show support because of the business it would cost him. The play is generally thought of as a comedy, but while it is indeed quite funny, in truth it is a portrait of a changing society and ultimately ends on bittersweet, even tragic note. There is seldom a dry eye in the house whenever it is performed.

Whenever I review a play I like to point out that plays are not really intended to be read: they are intended to be seen live on stage, and it is often difficult for the layman to read a play and grasp how it works when it is on the stage. DRIVING MISS DAISY reads very well, but at the same time people who aren't experienced at reading playscripts may find the way in which the scenes shift a bit difficult to follow on the page. Nonetheless, this is a beautiful, simple play about fundamental issues, and--whether you see it or read it--strongly recommended.

A Beautiful Play

"Driving Miss Daisy" is a play that shows how somebody can overcome their initial reactions towards a situation and how that situation changed their life forever. Thus is the story of Daisy,a Jewish woman living in Atlanta. Her son, Boolie, hires a chauffer to drive her around the city. Hoke, an african american man that Daisy wants to have no relation with, gets the job.
Opening up in the 1950's and running all the way to 1975, this story tells of the growing friendship between Daisy and Hoke. For the first few years Daisy is embarassed to being driven around by a black man but they soon develop a lasting friendship that will last forever.
"Driving Miss Daisy" tells one thing. It tells about changes in people. Daisy was a Jewish women who wanted absolutely no part with Hoke. Throughout the play Alfred Uhry is able to develop on each character from Daisy and Hoke, to the maid Idella, to Daisy's son Boolie, to Boolie's wife, and everybody else that appears. This is a very short play and Alfred Uhry had to have some skill to pull off the awesome character development in this.
"Driving Miss Daisy" is a story of change in people and of true friendship. This play went on Broadway and became a movie. This play won the Pulitzer Prize in Drama and four Academy Awards for the movie. I recommend this play to anybody that would enjoy a touching story of two people that were everything but friends at first who became best friends for life. Pick this play up and you will appreciate this story and the friendship that is depicted in it.

Very basic

Well this is good for a brief overview. It would be helpful for a high schooler or someone who wanted to refresh general Microbiology knowledge for use with other classes. I did not find it detailed enough to use for a non introductory level Microbiology class. I am a big fan of quickstudy guides in general though.

About the Author
Gene H. Bell-Villada, born in Haiti of US parents, was raised in Puerto Rico, Cuba and Venezuela. A professor of Romance Languages at Williams College (Massachusetts), he is the author or editor of ten books, including a TCK memoir, Overseas American: Growing Up Gringo in the Tropics (2005). Nina Sichel is co-editor, with Faith Eidse, of Unrooted Childhoods: Memoirs of Growing Up Global (2004), the first collection of memoirs by Third Culture Kids and Global Nomads. Raised among expats in Venezuela, she relocated many times as an adult, and currently leads memoir and guided writing workshops near Washington, DC.

The Experience of Growing Up Globally

Growing up in another culture other than one's own is not new. The world has a long history of diasporas and migrations of all kinds, and along with these goes many a told or untold story of the experience of the children who were taken along as members of the family. But within the time frame of the two World Wars in the Twentieth Century, and especially on the heels of WWII, a new awareness of such experiences as a wide-spread phenomenon with patterns all its own began to emerge. Expressions of what seemed to be unique and isolated experiences appeared, but without a conscious effort to label what they were writing about as a collective global experience. It acquired attention as an identifiable phenomenon slowly. Perhaps around 1990, one or more terms began to surface as a conscious attempt to label this experience: TCK (Third Culture Kids), GN (Global Nomads), as well as others were suggested. Much later, in 2008 or so, Gene H. Bell-Villada and Nina Sichel, two people who had lived and written about the experience , met and exchanged thoughts. Out of this meeting the idea of a focused attempt to learn more about it grew into a panel at a Modern Language Association (MLA) annual conference. It eventually produced this anthology.
The book is over 400 pp. long, and includes writers who know their trade. Essays on the foundation of the phenomenon, sociological studies, artful and sensitive reflections, memoirs, and more fill these pages. Definitions and analogies are not only extensively drawn up, but also personal narratives help to fill in the personal meaning of the experience.

There are repeated patterns that elaborate the essential experiences: home base of the beginning of the journey, the wonder of a new culture, often undergoing frequent change of locale and culture, language acquisition, sorting out of language and cultural meanings, educational encounters, expansion of horizons, conflicts, and eventually the inevitable return to one's own home culture. The outbound journey is expansive and usually exhilarating. The education is usually superb. Family and friends are extremely important and supportive. Some experience isolation and loneliness.

In the meantime one's base culture has begun to elude them. It has changed and/or managed to exclude them because "they have changed" and are no longer part of their native culture. They are neither of the culture they adopted nor of the culture they left. What does one do now? The moment of this awareness usually comes suddenly as the home country is visited again, or the child (now nearly adult) enters boarding school or college. Suddenly there is a starkly real existential crisis of "Who am I?" Fitting into one's former friends, attending high school or college after preparing for it in another country, attaining new friends, looking for a future career, marriage, and identification are all a new challenge.

This is what the book is about: identification of the phenomenon along with definitions; personal expressions of many variations of the experience, educational efforts to deal with the TCK student, memoirs, and reflections, as well as hard, statistical studies.

This is a new, emerging phenomena which is attracting more and more attention as the world turns international in almost every city in the world. The book is a seminal study of what globalization means.

It belongs in every university library as well as large public libraries. Yet, it isn't just an intellectual sociological collection. The essays are personal and well-written, full of personal, unique episodes that make it impossible to put a box around. It is an academic publication that is not just for libraries. It is recommended for personal research by those millions who have lived the third culture themselves.

LONG OVERDUE

This wonderful book is a "must read" for every parent, teacher, businessperson, volunteer and teenager who travels the world. Dealing with new cultures, while also handling the grief over the loss of a former home, can be a major challenge that can be met, as attested to by the authors, with humor and love and pride. To steal an artful phrase by Anna Maria Moore, one author in this remarkable essay collection, the volume itself is "a collection of... passports...filled with stamps blurred by hands thumbing through them in customs offices" around the globe.

Here, the editors have successfully combined personal essays and scholarly articles from Adult Third Culture Kids (ATCKs) and other Global Nomads to form a guidebook of sorts. This guidebook teaches and explains life lived in a globally-mobile sense: multiple cultures, multiple languages, frequent departures and separations. To live this way presents a complex set of challenges, and one byproduct is often a sense of alienation. The collection helps answer the questions: Where is home when your country isn't your country? Who are your people when no one around you has lived as you have lived?

It also helps explain the tax and toll struggling with this question can take on the psyche. For example, in my favorite scholarly essay in the collection, Memory, Language, and Identity: The Search for Self, Liliana Meneses explains that memories imprint based on the language associated with them; communicating in a language other than his mother tongue, a multilingual person might be unable to recall or recount early life events. The admirable adaptability of Third Culture Kids as adults is a direct result of this challenging upbringing. As Moore explains it, after four decades and five continents, she has become "a wild strawberry plant."

This is the most beautiful accomplishment of this collection: the essays weave together to tell the stories of multiple people who took on the struggles in a way that made them grow and change. In Continental Shifts, Moore shares how, as a 10-year-old in Holland, her initial confusion over the question Where am I from? resulted in excitement when she realized her TCK status meant she could choose! In The Religious Lives of Adult Missionary Kids, author Nancy Henderson-James parses the results of a survey which reveal how later-life faith is impacted by the faith and station of that person's missionary parents. And in Lemonade for the Gringa: Advice For and From Teenaged Global Nomads, Patricia Linderman reflects on how country-to-country moves change the relationship between teen Global Nomads and their families; the increased sense of dependence such moves instigate can strengthen the family bond upon each new arrival.

This collection is a must-read for anyone who has lived in a country other than their own, or anyone who can't claim a single country as their own, or anyone who delights in the idea of living somewhere else for a while. If you've contemplated raising your children in a culture other than your own, this is an important resource. And if you've ever felt like an Outsider in a culture where you think you should have a firmer stance on the ground, reading these testimonials and theses may just assuage your doubts and fears. Even when you are alone, you're not alone; there are dozens, hundreds, even thousands of like-living souls all around the world.

My book is now in it's 12th reprinting. I have received thousandss of e-mails and letters from readers around the world and I wish to thank each and every one of you for taking the time to write. My book was actually 15 years in the making and two years to pull all the manuscripts and notes together. My goal from the outset was to present graphology in a logical, step by step and entertaining manner. My wish has been to see graphology recognized in the scientific and educational fields. I believe the positive and enthusiastic reception of my book worldwide has made progress in these areas. My book is now included in over 1000 libraries in the United States and the United Kingdom and has been purchased for required reading in hundreds of colleges worldwide. The best book on handwriting analysis I have ever purchased. I highly recommend it to anyone with a desire to learn more on this fascinating and helpful science. I use my skills almost daily and it's amazing how accurate the information is in this book.

Fantastic Introduction to Handwriting Analysis

Filled with quizzes and teach-yourself reviews, this book is a great introduction into graphology. You will learn how to analyze samples, looking for component tells, but ultimately getting a bigger picture into the writer's psyche, and perhaps your own. In any case, it is very practical and will teach you how to analyze with very little difficulty because she makes it extremely logical. A great book for those who are just learning as well as those who wish to brush up on their skills.
