This excellent book (1st ed., 2002) about the use of participant observation in anthropological field research goes appreciably beyond this specific topic. In very accessible prose, Kathleen DeWalt (anthropology, Univ. of Pittsburgh) and Billie DeWalt (formerly, director, Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Pittsburgh) cover in some detail the many aspects of participant observation: its essential nature to the enterprise of anthropology and the preparation for and potential pitfalls of using this approach. The authors also present concepts not strictly associated with participant observation, like validity and reliability, elements of research design, online research, and a strong chapter on data management. In addition, there is discussion of computer indexing and coding, informed consent, and the legal status of anthropological research with reference to who owns field notes and the potential for the subpoena of those notes and the researcher. The authors systematize and demystify note taking and include an appendix with examples of field notes from three projects. There are many apt examples throughout that elucidate the points made. The authors are well accomplished ethnographer a and appear to have a wealth of information to share. Unfortunately most of the chapters are full of their trials and tribulations, leaving the reader to extract life lessons from them. I would have wanted a more theoretical book.

The classes often include extensive skills sets and movement progressions to help people move better. The programming is built around a highly organized, instructor-led training session. MISSING INFORMATION

The book is missing much of the text in regards to the workouts. It would be a great resource if complete, but unfortunately it is not. For example: " WOD:______________ AMRAP 15min",..okay, so what am I doing for 15 minutes as an AMRAP.
Extremely frustrating given the price tag.

a rare glimpse...

This book provides an incredibly rare and invaluable look into an entire year of unique, complex, and successful programming. Just by purchasing this book you will not become a better athlete, coach, or person. However, should you take the lessons of this programming and apply it to your own training, or (dare I even suggest) you actually do this programming as prescribed, you will see improvements in ways you may not have thought possible. It's hard to appreciate a "book" that takes weeks/months to benefit from, but if you don't have the gusto to hang with the lessons and design of this programming I think it's safe to say this book isn't for you. If you find that you've been doing crossfit, or other training, and don't have a good understanding of how to progressively program or how to break through plateaus, this book can help you open those doors.

Much of the crossfit community is sorely lacking in progressive programming -- including skills development, strength development, movement precision, and stamina. Any workout, on a given day, will make you a bit more fit...that's easy enough to accomplish. Programming that builds and develops the complete athlete is truly unique, and greatly in need. Doug is uniquely gifted in his understanding of the old schools, new schools, and evil schools of training and how to build them into an unmatched development series to optimize each athlete's potential. Follow the pages in the book, and see how workouts cycle, weights change, combinations of movements change, and think about how each is a new challenge that will make you better if you execute them correctly.
No one can make you a better athlete on paper. Doug's book gives you some tools, ideas, and lots of workout programming to help you get there if you can put the work in.

About the Author
Paula is president of Just ASK Publications & Professional Development and an ASK Group Senior Consultant. She lives in Alexandria, Virginia. She is the author of Why Didn't I Learn This in College?, The 21st Century Mentor's Handbook, Instruction for All Students, and Leading the Learning. Paula holds a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education from the University of Oklahoma, a Master of Education with an emphasis on Special Education from the University of North Florida, and has completed post-graduate course work in administration and educational leadership at the University of Virginia, Virginia Polytechnical Institute and State University, and George Mason University. She was recently awarded an honorary Doctorate of Education by MacMurray College, Jacksonville, Illinois, as well as the Outstanding Achievement Award for Excellence in Education by the College of Education at the University of Oklahoma. She has been a history and social studies teacher, a physical education teacher, a kindergarten teacher, a special education teacher, coordinator of special education programs, a school administrator, and professional development specialist in school districts across the country.

I chose this because of the number of students I have in my classroom that are from different cultures. What a shock (in a good way!) when I learned that it was not only about English Language Learners, but ALL different kinds of students (At risk, struggling, GT, etc.) The best thing about the book is that I now have strategies to try in my classroom. Very helpful book.

Beginning in the 1840s and continuing until his death, Dr. Asa Fitch (1809-1878) of Salem, NY, interviewed elderly neighbors, questioning them about the time of first European settlement, the Revolutionary War, and the first decades of the 19th century. Fitch was more than just a medical doctor. By the 1850s, he ranked as a world-famed entomologist, with important discoveries about insect life to his credit. He turned his precise, scientific mindset to good account in his oral history work. He seems to have functioned almost like a human tape recorder, transcribing and preserving vivid, colloquial statements from a wide range of individuals---most not fully literate people (that is, people who could read their Bible and sign their names but not write fluent accounts of the incidents of their lives.) Jeanne Winston Adler's excerpts from Fitch's manuscript ("Notes for a History of Washington County, NY," NY Genealogical & Biographical Soc., NYC; and elsewhere on microfilm) present the liveliest "voices" collected by the 19th-century scholar. Some portions of Adler's "Their Own Voices" (first published in 1983) were re-published in her "In the Path of War: Children of the American Revolution Tell Their Stories" (Cobblestone Publishing, 1998). A facsimile reprint of the 1983 book, containing all material originally excerpted from Fitch, is now offered here.

What was life like for the early settlers of Washington County, New York?� Over forty individuals--first settlers and their children--speak directly about their own and their families' experiences in this collection of oral statements recorded between 1847 and 1878.

� Isabel McIntyre, Hebron:� "We came in a wagon passing through Salem to within five miles of Munro's Meadows.� The road was not then opened clear through to the Meadows--indeed much of the way there was scarcely any road.� We got here in August [1771] and the weather very hot and flies and mosquitoes very troublesome."

� Donald McDonald, Salem:� "It was the hardest winter [1779-1780] that a poor boy ever had.� I used daily to tread a path from the barn west to the hill, which was then covered with wood, then cut down a tree, trample the snow down all around the top of it, cut off the limbs and lay them along the path for the cattle; then drive them out to the spot and let them go to feeding; then get up the team, snake the butt of the tree to the house and cut it up for firewood."

� George Fowler, Cambridge:� "We marched on up to Fort George which had been burned by the enemy who had just gone down the lake [October 1780].� The beams and other timbers of the fort were still smoking and burning when we arrived.� The bodies of the twelve men were found lying where they fell--scalped and shockingly mangled.� It was a most horrid sight on looking at which I turned faint and sick."

Recommended for anyone with an interest in upstate NY history in the regions around Lake George and Lake Champlain. A fascinating look into life on the northern frontier before and during the Revolutionary War period.
