Not as good as others like it...

I ordered this book as well as Edible Wild Plants by Thomas S. Elias & Peter A. Dykeman. This book relies on drawings and has very few color photos whereas the book by Elias and Dykeman is all color photos and a much easier to use and higher quality guide.

Good for research, not so much for quick reference

This guide has a lot of good information if you have time to piece it all together. I bought it to try to identify plants in my area that would be good for foraging. The way this is organized, it's hard to quickly identify local flora and fauna. It is mostly categorized by plant species, then you have to see if that plant is in your area. I think it would be easier if it were categorized by state/region, then by plant type, etc or even if it were categorized by season so that I know what I could be looking for today. Another helpful arrangement would be by use (salad-type greens, spices, teas, starches, etc.) There are a few color pictures of plants in the wild, but most illustrations are pencil drawings, which for me is not very helpful especially when a poison plant and a safe plant look the same except for a few minute differences. If the apocolypse were to happen tomorrow, I would likely go hungry for a couple of weeks trying to find my way through this book. As it is now, I am using it as a starting point to compile my own unique foraging guide that's organized so that it's more functional.

Not very helpful.

I recently went on a camping trip in Tennessee. I've been trying to perfect my bug out bag through trial and error. One of the things that I thought would be important for me to have is a guide to edible plants for the area that I live in. This book had good reviews and I do a lot of my purchasing through Amazon so I thought I'd give it a try. While I was out hiking I picked a number of plants to take back to the camp sight. But when I tried to use this book to identify the plants I was disappointed. The hand drawn pictures were not enough for me to positively identify any but a couple of the plants that I harvested. Even without a picture a good description of the plant would have been enough for me to know what I had. Unfortunately the book didn't provide enough of a detailed description for me to be sure that what I had was edible or poisonous. My advice is to look for a guide that either provides a color photograph, not a drawing of the plants, or at least provides a better description of the plants. I have to add one star for the effort I'm sure it involved in making the book but other than that it doesn't have much going for it. Not a good buy.

Eisenhower's assurance, however, rested on classified information, and he did little to instill his confidence in the public. Nor could he boast of his early support for the secret spy satellite program (which quickly replaced the U-2 plane after Gary Powers was shot down in 1960). So the public continued to worry, feeding the national movement for educational reform as well as congressional maneuvering over funding for numerous strategic projects.
Eisenhower, Divine writes, possessed keen strategic vision and a sure sense of budgetary priorities, but ultimately he flunked a crucial test of leadership when he failed to reassure the frightened public that their fears were groundless. As a result, he ultimately failed in his goal to limit military spending as well--which led to a real missile gap in reverse. Incisively written and deeply researched, The Sputnik Challenge provides a briskly-paced history of the origins of NASA, the space race, and the age of the ICBM.

Most disturbing was the fear that the Soviet Union had grabbed a decisive lead in the development of long-range missiles. As Divine ( Eisenhower and the Cold War ) points out, the panicky response to Sputnik had a long-lasting effect on American life, spurring a national debate over the state of education, science, space exploration and security that lasted well into the 1960s. The principal focus of this succinct, clear-sighted study is President Dwight Eisenhower's moderate, balanced response to the Sputnik crisis. Divine analyzes the president's role in limited expansion of the U.S. missile program, acceleration of the reconnaissance-satellite effort, modest increases in federal aid to education and the creation of a civilian agency devoted to the peaceful exploration of outer space, i.e., NASA. Russia's launching of the world's first artificial satellite in October 1957 touched off a hysterical reaction among the American public fearful that the event signaled a fundamental shift in the strategic balance. President Eisenhower's calm response to the propaganda victory was taken at the time as evidence of complacency and opened his administration to a torrent of criticism by the press and Congress. In Divine's detailed account, which draws heavily on archival sources, he argues that the president's measured response was entirely correct. Eisenhower's firm belief that fiscal responsibility and a balanced budget were at least as important to the national security as were missiles led him to avoid crash programs and costly duplications of weapons systems. At the same time, he used the public furor to push his plans for the reorganization of the Pentagon, for educational reforms, and for the creation of the civilian space agency, NASA. Despite the correctness of Eisenhower's response from a policy standpoint, Divine nevertheless notes that the failure to allay public fears constituted a major failure of presidential leadership. Highly recommended for academic libraries.

A lucid analysis of how Russia's unpredicted space-race breakthrough affected, and was handled by, the nation's 34th President. Divine (History/University of Texas at Austin) is also the author of Eisenhower and the Cold War (1981), etc. Cautious, thrifty, and well-versed in politics, bureaucracy, and military matters, Eisenhower nonetheless found himself riding the storm when Sputnik appeared in the skies on October 4, 1957, and was soon followed by larger satellites containing first a dog, then a man. Hysteria was imminent as Americans extrapolated from satellite to missile performance; from education to fallout shelters, US culture, Divine says, was changed forever. The author shows Congress and the media hounding Eisenhower, his popularity dropping 20 points in half a year--and he explains how Ike, despite the pressure, rallied the nation's resources to respond to the Soviet challenge without creating the sort of pork-barrelling national debt that marked the end of the cold war. The author tells his story with exceptional clarity, keeping track of the endless maze of agencies, experts, politicos, and generals that figure in it. Competition and duplication of effort among the military services (which had near-identical weapons in development) and a rampaging Congress were, Divine explains, ongoing problems for Eisenhower. Meanwhile, the President, who correctly foresaw the decades of cold war ahead, insisted on fiscal responsibility, believing that a sound economy as much as technical advantage would decide the race with the Russians. An important Reinterpretation of the Sputnik Crisis

"The Sputnik Challenge" is one of several very fine works published since 1990 that have reinterpreted the history of the first years of the space age. The figure of Dwight D. Eisenhower has dominated this recent work, and does so in this important book by Robert A. Divine, and Ike has accordingly emerged as a much more effective leader than thought at the time. Rather than a smiling, do-nothing, golf-playing president, Eisenhower's leadership in handling the Soviet Union in space now increasingly appears far-sighted and rational. To ensure against Soviet aggression, Eisenhower supported the development of ICBM deterrent capabilities and reconnaissance satellites as a means of learning about potentially aggressive actions.
Most important, Eisenhower established the right of international overflight with satellites, making possible the free use of reconnaissance spacecraft in future years. From the perspective of the Eisenhower administration, which was committed to development of an orbital reconnaissance capability as a national defense initiative, an international agreement to ban satellites from overflying national borders without the individual nation's permission was unacceptable. Eisenhower was concerned that if the United States was the first nation to orbit a satellite, the Soviet Union could invoke territorial rights in space. Soviet Sputniks 1 and 2, however, overflew international boundaries without provoking a single diplomatic protest.
As Divine shows in this book, on October 8, 1957, Deputy Secretary of Defense Donald Quarles told the president: "the Russians have...done us a good turn, unintentionally, in establishing the concept of freedom of international space." Eisenhower immediately grasped this as a means of pressing ahead with the launching of a reconnaissance satellite. The precedent held for Explorer 1 and Vanguard 1, and by the end of 1958 the tenuous principle of "freedom of space" had been established. By allowing the Soviet Union to lead in this area, the Russian space program had established the U.S.-backed precedent for free access.
Of course, as Divine demonstrates, Eisenhower displayed a tin ear when asked to listen to the American public in the aftermath of the Sputnik launches in October and November 1957. Eisenhower triefd to reassure U.S. citizens that efforts in space were on track but he was insufficiently successful. He was berated in the media and on the stump for this failure at the time, and there are some appropriate reasons to question his administration's ability to react to public unrest.
At the same time, Ike's leadership in the crisis winter of 1957-1958 yielded some of the most sweeping governmental reorganizations and new programs to be undertaken at the federal level since the New Deal. Divine suggests that overall, Ike made several important changes to react to the Sputnik crisis, taking these decisive actions:
1. Established a Science Advisor, and the President's Science Advisory Committee, to coordinate basic research in the Federal government.
2. Approved additional space research activities.
3. Backed up IGY satellite program with Explorer 1, launched January 31, 1958, "to make sure we fire a satellite at an early date."
4. Established the Advanced Research Projects Agency within the Department of Defense.
5. Sponsored the National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958, creating a single Federal organization--NASA--to manage space exploration activities.
6. Sponsored the National Defense Education Act of 1958 to stimulate the education, training, and research for science and technology.
These efforts have now been effectively analyzed in Robert Divine's, "The Sputnik Challenge." Most people only remember NASA's creation from this period, but the response was much more sweeping and significant.

1. Sputnik was not painted black. Rather, it was polished silver to reflect as much light as possible - so it could be seen readily.
2. It wasn't broadcasting on an odd frequency ; rather, the Soviets had chosen short wave bands so all the world could hear it.
3. Vanguard wasn't a 20 pound nose cone; it was a sphere.
4. The Viking rocket was not a direct descendant of the V-2
I put the book down at that point ... True, it's a political and not technical book. But check your facts, man ...

About the Author
William D. Phillips, Jr. is Professor of History at the University of Minnesota and directed the Center for Early Modern History there from 2001 to 2008. His previous publications include Testimonies from the Columbus Lawsuits (edited 2000), The Worlds of Christopher Columbus (with Carla Rahn Phillips, 1992, 'Spain in America' (Second) Prize, awarded by the Spanish government), Historia de la esclavitud en Espa�a (1990), Slavery from Roman Times to the Early Transatlantic Trade (1985), and Enrique IV and the Crisis of Fifteenth-Century Castile (1978). He is a corresponding member of the Spanish Royal Academy of History.

Carla Rahn Phillips is Union Pacific Professor in Comparative Early Modern History at the University of Minnesota. Her previous publications include Six Galleons for the King of Spain: Imperial Defense in the Early Seventeenth Century (1986, winner of the 1987 'Leo Gershoy Award' of the American Historical Association for best book in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century European history), Spain's Golden Fleece: Wool Production and the Wool Trade from the Middle Ages to the Nineteenth Century (1997, with William D. Spain as a first global empire

In a departure from usual practice,Cambridge University Press has approached two North American history experts to compose this concise history reader and the result is a beautifully written piece of history for this most complex of European nations.In a brief 308 pages,the early inhabitants of Spain are identified, notably the Romans and Visigoths and their impacts are identified. Then we are treated to thorough analysis of the widespread Islamic impact with a description of all the political and social trends of that interesting time. With great clarity,the authors make sense of Spain's rise to a global power and then its eventual decline. With broad brush strokes,their last chapter captures the great social changes that took place after General Franco and the halting steps to a modern democracy. In this soft-bound edition,this history of Spain is beautifully crafted and is highly recommended.

Just What The Doctor Ordered

We went to Spain for a trip and I got interested in the history. I wanted something that wasn't so high level that all the detail was washed out, but not so terribly deep that the level of trivia involved became tedious. I thought this one was just right. Spain is such an interesting place and it's history has impacted the world deeply. But in the U.S. we don't really learn much about it in our normal history classes.

A Thorough Study for the Non-Academic

The Basue separatist movement and the recent noise of independence coming from Barcelona on behalf of Catalonia led me to this book. Spain is referred to in so many different ways (Aragon, Granada, Castille, etc.) that I had never sorted out geographically or historically. This volume makes it all clear, and I recommend it as an excellent history of this fascinating country.

Tips for using this book...

There are two versions of this book: one for guitar and one for ukulele. This one's for ukulele. If you are just strumming the chords (and you know your chords,) it doesn't really matter which book you get, but if you need reminders about where to put your fingers on the frets while you're playing the chords buy this one. It includes a chord diagram above every chord in every song which makes it much easier to learn the songs.

Several reviews write that this book is too advanced for them, but there is a good variety of levels among the songs:

Beginning
Na Ka Pueo (C, F, & G7), Keyhole Hula (Kauhoa Mai) (G, C, D7), 'Ulili E (C, F, G7 with an extra note on the F that can be left off and a C5 that can be played as a simple C if desired)

Intermediate (Each song has the basic chords with a couple of new chords added in to give it a richer sound. These range from super-easy chords like Gsus or G9, or more advanced chords like Bbmaj7 and Bbm)
Over The Rainbow - What A Wonderful World Medley, White Sandy Beach, Panini Puakea, He Hawai'i Au, Hawaii 78, Hawaiian Like Me, 'Ama 'Ama, Ka Kua U'i, Kuhio Bay

Advanced (Each song has a mostly more advanced chords that change quickly)
Hene Kou 'Aka, Ka Huila Wai, Wind Beneath My Wings

The bottom line for most people looking at this book is whether they can play Over The Rainbow/What A Wonderful World and White Sandy Beach: On Over The Rainbow there's a G/B, but a plain old G sounds almost the same, there's a C played as a barre chord on the third fret, but a regular C works, there's an Am7 & an Em7, but in both cases plain Am & Em can be played. If you've been playing for a little while you should be able to play this song in a basic way. If you give yourself a little time to learn the Hawaiian strum that IZ uses on the CD, you can sound great on this song in a relatively short time. White Sandy Beach, on the other hand, has BbMaj7, Bbm & Bbm6 chords that cannot be omitted or substituted with more basic chords. They are barre chords, but they are not super-difficult and can be mastered with a little persistence. If you really want to "up" your game learn the fingerpicking pattern - it may take a few weeks of dedicated practice, but it's SO worth it!

If you are a real beginner you could start with the easier songs and work your way up to the more advanced ones.

All of these songs can be played with just the chords, but this book includes tabbed transcriptions for the exact fingerpicking that is played on the record by IZ. If you are branching out into fingerpicking it's a good way to challenge yourself, and remember that fingerpicking requires muscle memory, so keep at it until your fingers can play it without your brain thinking about it (my Dad used to have me walk around the yard or carry on a conversation with him while practicing my fingerpicking.) If you are an experienced fingerpicker you can see IZ's patterns and quickly incorporate them into your playing for a genuine Hawaiian sound.

I've been playing music my entire life and in my experience it is really rare to find a book that is this accurate to what the artist plays on the recording. Everything is in the right key and the chords are all correct so you can play along with the CD and really get the feel for Hawaiian music as it is played here in the Islands. If you are newer to playing you might want to get a "Slow Downer" music app for your tablet or phone. This lets you play any songs that you have downloaded onto your device at a much slower tempo (but at the right pitch) while you are learning the trickier parts. Very helpful.

One more tip for beginners: don't give up! If the song feels difficult when you try to play it, just keep at it a little everyday. You'll be amazed when one day you realize that you are playing it perfectly. Every time you challenge yourself with a song in this way your skill level increases exponentially. This is one of those rare music books that gives you the chance to really grow.

IZ - The Ukulele Songbook

Excellent book for players who can get around the uke a bit. Has some of the well known hits such as Over The Rainbow, Wonderful World and White Sandy Beach. Notation and (Uke) tablature seem to be accurate. Book is well presented and is using recycled paper giving it a nice quality. As I teach ukulele this book will be invaluable as a resource. Contains 16 transcriptions.

Anything IZ is good...

Nice selection of songs, music and lyrics. I agree with another reviewer, it is mostly too advanced for my 'Ukulele skills, I've been playing just over a year. But I like the book, I attempt to play what I can, and look forward to one day being able to play it all. :)
