The Third of 12 Star Trek Adaptation Books by James Blish

James Blish began adapting the stories of the original Star Trek television show in 1967. The third paperback book was titled "Star Trek 3." This paperback book contains the seven stories of the original book adapted mostly from the second season of the show, with one story from the third season of the television show.

Note that all episode numbers are the order in which the episodes originally appeared on television.

The first story is "The Trouble with Tribbles," which was the fifteenth episode of the second season. The television show was one of five Star Trek episodes nominated for a 1968 Hugo Award, the winner being "The City on the Edge of Forever," collected in "Star Trek 2." The Enterprise is delivering grain to a planet in dispute between the Klingons and the Federation. Lovable little tribbles interfere by eating all the grain, but the little critters discover that the grain, and Klingons, does not agree with them. This story is one of Star Trek's best.

The second story is "The Last Gunfight," which was the sixth episode of the third season, titled "Spectre of the Gun" on television. The Enterprise enters the Melkotian system with the intent of inviting the Melkotians to join the Federation. The Melkotians seem intent on remaining outside the Federation, and soon members of the Enterprise find themselves adjacent to the OK Corral and an impending gunfight. Mr. Spock may hold the key to the salvation of them all!

The third story is "The Doomsday Machine," which was the sixth episode of the second season. This episode was another 1968 Hugo Award nominee. The badly damaged Constellation and the Enterprise must fight a machine that munches on entire planets. How can two starships fight a device that uses entire planets for fuel and has an impervious hull? Sometimes terrible sacrifices must be made to save a galaxy.

The fourth story is "Assignment: Earth," which was the twenty-sixth and final televised episode of the second season. The Enterprise travels into Earth's past, only to discover an alien beaming to Earth with incredible technology. What is Gary Seven's intention? As Mr. Seven attempts to sabotage a rocket Captain Kirk must make a decision that could either destroy the human race or insure its survival.

The fifth story is "Mirror, Mirror," the fourth televised episode of the second season. The television episode was yet another 1968 Hugo Award nominee. Captain Kirk, Dr. McCoy, Scotty, and Lt. Uhura are beaming aboard the Enterprise when they discover they are in an alternate universe. In this alternate universe the members of the Enterprise's crew are ruthless, with assassination being a popular means of promotion. The four members must keep their origin secret while learning how to return to their own universe. This story is based on one of the best Star Trek television episodes.

The sixth story is "Friday's Child," which was the eleventh televised episode in the second season. The television episode on which this story was based was quite daring in its day, as it showed a child in danger and a brutally cold woman that showed no qualms in sacrificing her child. The landing party has a difficult time trying to meet the prime directive while negotiating with the locals, and dealing with Klingons who are less concerned with polluting the local culture.

The seventh story in this volume is "Amok Time," the first televised episode of the second season. The televised episode was yet another 1968 Hugo Award nominee. We have observed Mr. Spock to be as emotionless as possible throughout the first season of the show. However, Vulcan mating rituals require Vulcans to observe a particular custom periodically, or die. Spock returns to Vulcan, but he also returns to betrayal and plots. In order for Spock to extract himself from an impossible situation, Captain Kirk may have to die!

James Blish did a marvelous job of adapting the television episodes. Sometimes Blish made modifications to the story to make it work better for a written short story, but Blish kept the intent of the story as faithful to the television series as possible.

This wonderful book is written with the premise our churches suffer from "a famine of hearing the words of our Lord" despite the availability and advantages of a plethora of Biblical tools, expositors, and communicative mediums. Packer analyzes the reasons for the churches' spiritual lethargy, which has evolved due to faulty presuppositions and perceptions that have indoctrinated themselves into the Christian mindset through modern Biblical criticism and current philosophical trends. Packer addresses these errant views and reestablishes the proper Biblical precepts necessary for the church to regain its perspicacity and vitality in studying the Word of God.

Great Little Book

This book was first published in 1965 (unlike what the Amazon description indicates) and was reprinted in 1988 by Baker. This reprint includes the Chicago Statements on Biblical Inerrancy from 1978 and 1982.

This is one of Packer's earlier endeavors, but, despite having been originally written nearly half a century ago, it is still relevant today. In it, Packer shows why it is absolutely essential not only that the church ground its preaching and teaching entirely and exclusively on the Word of God but why Christians must become biblically literate through careful study of the Word. Without a knowledge of the Word, not only will we not have an understanding of who God is, but we will not understand the greatness and glory of God in our salvation. Given the state of the church today, Packer's message of the importance of hearing and understanding God's Word is one that is more needed than ever. This is a book that grows in its relevance with each passing year.

the butler did it

Tall 24yo butler heroine is leading her enigmatic businessman employer Hero to believe that the blonde woman in slinky lingerie he slept with the night before was 1 of his estate's ghosts. She is embarrassed that she doesn't remember anything that happened while she slept b/c of being drunk & feels relieved that Hero doesn't recognize her the next day dressed in her usual prim butler uniform & tightly-swept hairstyle. He soon finds out what she's been hiding when he sees her on a date with her hair down & dressed sexily. How far will Hero pursue her & how much will she resist their mutual & strong attraction to each other?

This Napier book was a bit of a fun read. Hero & heroine played a hide & seek game re: the mysterious blonde woman's identity & after he finds out it was really her. It gave their romance some adventure & suspense & put some steam in their sexual chemistry. There were some socioeconomic & personal differences b/w Hero & heroine that put a block in their romance. Overall a light & good romance.

Not one of Susan's best books

Benedict Savage is a successful architect, going on 34 when that vague sense of dissatisfaction that has been plaguing him for quite sometime makes him seek refuge in Whitefield House, a property that he had inherited from an uncle who had left it to him, a property that had come along with his deceased uncle’s female butler Vanessa Flynn.

Finding a mystery woman in Benedict’s bed is what kick-starts the story, a woman who disappears by the next morning leaving Benedict flummoxed by the whole thing until he discovers who it is that had been gracing his bed that night. Thus follows a series of twists and turns, a lot of advancing on Benedict’s part and retreating on Vanessa’s part which culminates of course in a happily ever after.

Susan Napier has some very good Harlequin romances out there, in fact she is one of those Harlequin authors who is on my auto-buy list. The aspects that worked for me includes the hero; his intensity is hard not to take notice of. Then there is the novelty of a heroine who is taller than the hero in the story; as most romance readers know, that is something that rarely happens in a romance.

The sexual tension though was a vital presence in the story, I got a bit tired of the continuous back and forth drama that was happening and in the end skim read through chunks of the story later on. Recommended for die-hard fans of Harlequin romances.

very much enjoyed this story

I enjoyed this story very much. I really liked how vocal the H was as he told the h what he was thinking and was intending to do - very HOT! Another aspect I liked was how the h was taller than the H. I'm a tall woman and when I wear heels I tower over my husband and we both love it. The difference in height is liberating and allows a stronger ability to tap into my own female aggressiveness. I really liked hoe the verbal rhetoric between the H and h illustrated this aspect. Very nice story!!!

Not much change over Pro ASP.NET MVC 4

There are not many significant changes between this version 5 and Pro MVC 4 (or even Pro MVC 3). Here are some significant or not so significant changes I found over Pro MVC 4:

Part 1: Introducing ASP.NET MVC 5
- A new chapter with an incomplete mobile version of the Sports Store application, but unlike the main Sports Store application, it is only a brief introduction, not very useful for learning mobile Web development with ASP.NET MVC.
- Bootstrap is used for styling the Sports Store tutorial instead of plain CSS used in Pro MVC 3 and Pro MVC 4.
- VS Express 2013 is used for the Sports Store tutorial.

Warning: the deprecated FormsAuthentication.Authenticate() from Pro MVC 3 is still used for the Sports Store admin in this MVC 5 version (which should have been replaced with something such as the new Identity API).

Part 2: ASP.NET MVC in Detail
- A section on MVC 5 Attribute Routing has been added to chapter 15 URL Routing.
- A combination of Knockout/jQuery is used for the example SPA in the Web API chapter instead of plain jQuery. (PS. with this small example, I could actually replace the jQuery/Knockout code with AngularJS code and compare the difference between Knockout and AngularJS).

If you have bought Adam Freeman's Pro MVC 4 or Pro MVC 3 before, money would be better spent to buy Pro AngularJS by the same author where the same Sports Store tutorial application is re-written with AngularJS.

Perfect book for those new to MVC

My background: I have been building in .NET applications for 8 years, with experience in web application development, but with no experience in any MVC-style technology.

This is one of the best technology books I've ever read for a technology I'm learning from scratch. The first half of the book covers the basics, then starts to build, chapter by chapter, an actual application that slowly teaches you the basics of all the concepts. This is followed up by deep dive chapters on each of those concepts that go into heavy detail. I read the first half of the book all the way through, then skipped around to topics that interested me for the last half.

Adam Freeman's writing style and examples are thorough, step by step, and easy to follow. He continually states not to worry about certain topics too much in the first half, but gives you a clear reference point as to where he covers that topic later in the book in detail if you do want to skip ahead.

I picked up the print version of this from amazon, but I did get the companion ebook from Apress directly (they heavily discount this on their site), which made it much easier to copy and paste in code examples.

Up front, Adam includes explanations of dependency injection (showing how to use Ninject in MVC), mocking (focusing on Moq), and a bit of the Entity Framework as well, and throughout the book focuses on unit testing cases as well (though if you wish to skip these, they are clearly marked to be separated from the rest of the content). While you may be anxious to dive straight into the MVC-specific content, this really lets you practically see how to truly build your own MVC apps using industry-standard techniques.

I plan on picking up the Pro ASP.NET MVC Platform book Adam Freeman is writing as soon as it is out this year, and while he makes plenty of references to an ASP.NET MVC 5 Client book he was writing in this book, I contacted Apress for a release date on that, who told me it has been put on hold indefinitely, which is a shame (Adam, if you are reading this, I'd love to get your recommendation on other resources covering the Client material to fill those gaps, if you could reply to this review).

There are some complaints in the reviews here around not covering ASP.NET Identity. This is going to be covered in the Platform book due out later this year. I have purchased this book as an early access copy, and as of today (4/5/2014), the early release copy has these chapters but they are not yet formatted nicely. As noted by some comments here, Adam also indicates in this book that when the security-related chapters are ready for the Platform book, Apress will allow them to be downloaded free of charge since he does not want folks to have to buy an entire second book just to read about security.

Overall, if you have C# experience but are brand new to MVC, this is absolutely the book to pick up.

One small technical note: On computers that do not have older versions of Visual Studio installed, I did run into runtime errors on the examples where Ninject was looking for a System.Web.MVC v3 DLL. In order to fix this, include the following in your root directory's web.config file, just before the at the end of the file. Amazon keeps stripping out the bindingredirect line - replace the | characters with < and > instead.

For people new to C# and/or ASP.NET and/or MVC 5 and/or Entity Framework

Newbies to the platform, please read:

First of all, this book is very important. Is the only properly done documentation in the whole web about ASP.NET MVC 5 for complete beginners. This will NOT teach you C#.

One extraordinary big suggestion I give, is to read the book COMPLETELY, before banging your head. The first 14 chapters of the book may look like some alien stuff. But the author starts explaining afterwads.

I also suggest you to look for Ninject documentation online, and compliment it with the one in the book. You'll then get to understand what Dependency Injection is (It took me long days to understand part of it). The same goes for Unit Testing and Mocking, which all three where completely new terms for me.

I started reading the book with basic C# knowledge and I needed to look for external references to close the gap. It isn't imperative to know lots of C# code. Pretty basic will do fine.

Now, I've been struggling a lot with ASP.NET MVC 5. I've started using C# (coming from PHP) since the beginning of this year, and when I started reading this book I've stumbled man many many black mental lagoons. Which I needed to use Google + MSDN + Stack Overflow to get rid of them.

To this day I haven't dominated the thing at all. I've been stuck with reading and updating from the Database, and that is something I want to tell you about:

This book is about the MVC framework. Please note that the MVC framework isn't the one which takes charge of the database: Creating, Reading, Updating, Deleting (CRUD) tables and databases is taken care of the Identity API and Entity Framework,.

Identity can be learned from Chapters 14 and 15 from the ASP.NET Platform book, given by free by the author on Apress' site.

Entity Framework can be learned from the Entity Framework 6 Recipe and "Getting Started with Entity Framework 6 Code First using MVC 5 with Tom Dykstra"

One last thing: ASP.NET MVC 5 is a very very very powerful and excellent tool for working with. The only problem that it has, is to learn how to use it. Documentation isn't as broad as PHP (in my opinion it's kind of scarce), so you may struggle a little bit. But as many others have said, DO NOT quit, and keep trying until you make it.

So, if you're new to the ASP.NET MVC 5 platform, go ahead and grab this book. You may be sorry at first, but later on you'll discover it was worth it. Remember to top it with Entity Framework books because those two are brothers which you'll be using a lot in your web apps!

About the Author
Claude Audoin received his doctorate in physics from the Universit� Paris Sud in 1967. He was Director of the Laboratoire de l'Horloge Atomique, Orsay, from 1972 to 1985 and managed research programmes related to hydrogen masers, optically pumped cesium beams, trapped ions, frequency stabilised lasers and frequency metrology. He has published numerous papers on the subject of atomic frequency standards and their metrological properties, and is co-author of a previous book covering the quantum physics of atomic frequency standards. Dr Audoin is also on the editorial board of Metrologia and is a member of the Bureau des Longitudes.

Bernard Guinot was an officer in the merchant navy before receiving his masters degree in mathematics in 1952. He then joined the Paris Observatory and in 1958 received the Doctorat d'Etat. His research was devoted to fundamental astronomy, space geodesy and the measurement of time, and he is the author of numerous papers on these subjects. From 1964 to 1988, Dr Guinot was Director of the Bureau International de l'Heure, where he was involved in the transition to modern techniques for measuring the rotation of the Earth and the development of International Atomic Time, which is now under the responsibility of the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures. He is a member of the Bureau des Longitudes and the Academia Europaea.

A Gem in Time!

I found this excellent translation from the original French to be a most authoritative and lucid treatment of the physics and metrology of time on a superior technical level, by two of the most prominent figures in the field. It gives comprehensive coverage of atomic frequency standards including the most recent advances involving cold atoms and trapped ions, such as the the cesium "fountain" and mercury ion standards. I consider this book essential reading for anyone with an ambition to become steeped in the field, and offers a more technically sophisticated treatment than is attempted, for example, in a book such as "Quantum Beat".

This is NonFiction the torture experience by Sheikh and other detainees is Real and on-going unjustly in Guantanamo Bay

As I read Sheikh Abdul salam Zaeef's encounter as a prisoner if war my stomach is twisted in knots of pain, anger and disgust. Unjustly dragged to the brink of death repeatedly , but not given the comfort of death that only a detainee could wish for. And be assured that your graves will be the darkest of cages in which your nationality and false sense of superiority will make no difference. I've had to read it in intervals due to the explicit torture scenes and if only reading it is so heart wrenching, I cannot even begin to imagine the pain suffered by detainees. We pray to Allah to to ease the suffering of all the detainees and allow them the justice they deserve.
