Campbell Scott offers a weak performance of this lifeless tale of a troubled paramedic haunted by the memories of patients who have died in his care. Connelly administers a heavy dose of nihilism by depicting Frank Pierce as a man trapped in a meaningless routine of saving the lives of New York City's hopeless cases who are destined to destroy themselves. Scott's melancholy tone compounds the listlessness of the story. His colorful characterizations of Pierce's ambulance partners and slick-talking inner-city inhabitants present a taste of life on the streets, but this can't make up for the program's overall weakness.?Mark P. You can smell the dead and dying

Joe Connelly's book is about the hopeless decline of a New York ambulance driver's sanity. While I've never gone crazy or driven a meat wagon, I nearly know what those things might feel like. I know what the cab might smell like, how the radio might sound minutes before dawn, how the burned coffee and greasy Chinese food might come back up after binge drinking with firefighters and cops at seven in the morning after a night of body horror. Connelly's prose will take you from revulsion to torpor to elation in such rapid succession that you may have to put the book down and take a walk. The jagged ends of each chapter don't always match the start of the next, and Connelly manipulates this disjointed sensation to an expert degree. While I was sad to finish the book, the ending felt earned and satisfying. A great read.

beautiful, authentic, and worth every moment.

I am a paramedic with 8 years experience. If you ever wondered NOT exactly how it is to be a medic, but how it often FEELS, then read this book. It is perfectly done and adds the tiny stories that medics trade among ourselves, those times when the truth is stranger than fiction.

If you liked the movie, you'll love the book!

This is an amazing tale of life as an EMS worker, namely, a Paramedic. Especially on night shift and in a busy system. The battles to get food, find sanity, and keep PTSD at bay (more or less successfully.) This story will let you know what you're in for if you're wondering what it's like to be a medic, but more than that, it can be catharsis for those of us who are living it now. It's funny, tragic, dark, and honest. It can be exactly what you need it to be.
