Very sloppy for a 4th edition and for the price

This book gets 2 stars because overall I really liked the organization of the material. There were many useful charts for breaking down different groups of bacteria by biochemical reactions. However, this book is FULL of typos. Some are funny, some have no impact, and some are outright false and could cause you to remember incorrect information. In my class it seemed as if every chapter went into, we were warned of things in charts that were wrong or reversed. In one of the fist chapters we had to read, which was covering the use of colony morphology in identifying an isolate, the caption for a picture was describing the colony morphology of Bacillus cereus on a blood agar plate; but the picture was of a positive D-test that was performed on a Staphylococcus aureus. Not only was this the wrong picture, but this picture did not even belong in the chapter at all. If I were not already working in microbiology as an MLT I think this book would have been worse for me, but since I already have direct experience with it, I was able to simply laugh off the mistakes. Other people in my class working on becoming MLS's that have not worked in micro had a much more difficult time as it is difficult enough to learn diagnostic microbiology much less to have to remember which things in the book were right or wrong. So if you are from a clinical laboratory program and looking at this book as a prospective required text for your program, I would look elsewhere. This textbook is worth no where near $100 in its current condition. If it were a term paper, it would have received an "F" due to all of the proofreading errors.

Would have been better if they'd cut out the filler.

For a science textbook, this was ... OK. If I were judging it by any other set of standards, I probably would only have given it 2 stars. The number one problem was that at least half of the textbook was filler that you had to slog through just to find the things you really needed to understand the subject. If not for that, it would have been a good textbook. It has plenty of charts and goes in more detail about the organisms and lab tests than most. I tried comparing it to another book by a similar title, Bailey & Scotts Diagnostic Microbiology. While B&S's book was easier to read and understand, it was lacking in crucial details at times, forcing me to turn back to this textbook. Some might want to try Essentials of Microbiology by Kumar. I'm still reviewing it, but it seems to be one of the few Micro textbooks that's not only simple and straight to the point, but also includes something lab students really need: Details about biochemical tests and reactions! At the very least, I think Essentials of Microbiology would be a good partner to this textbook.

difficult to get through

I haven't looked through this book in a while (at least 6 months) and I no longer have it, but I still thought it was worth reviewing my thoughts about this book. This was a required text for my Clinical Microbiology course for my degree program in Medical Laboratory Sciences. I am one of those people who likes to read the text, but with this book about half way through the semester I gave up. The way the information was presented just seemed daunting. It was hard to pull out the important information out of the text, everything came across as a jumbled mess. I gave up on the text and just focused on the teacher's powerpoints. I am now required to use this text during my clinical year but instead of keeping this one I replaced it with Bailey & Scott's Diagnostic Microbiology text and it is a million times better. Do yourself a favor if this is a required text, pick up a better book, it will help so much with your class.

The difficult transition from family home to retirement community is poignantly rendered in this cross-generational tale told from a child's viewpoint. Emily tours her grandmother's empty house one last time before taking the reluctant Oma to her new residence. Bourgeois (author of the Franklin series) creates an immediate nostalgic feeling with Emily's observations. (Oma's house "still smells like cabbage soup, warm yeasty dough, lemon polish and vinegar.") Though the subject is bittersweet, the author keeps the story moving in lighthearted fashion, as optimistic Emily offers her impression of Oma's new home: "There are flowers everywhere.... There is a library... and even bowling on Wednesdays!" A displaced Oma is full of complaints ("The bowling alley lanes are crooked and the rental shoes smell funny" and she takes to calling her fellow residents "Nincompoops!"). Jorisch's (As for the Princess: A Folktale from Quebec) sun-drenched watercolors showing plump chairs and sofas in warm colors maintain a cheery mood. As Emily and her mother sort through Oma's now-boxed-up belongings, the girl suggests that they sew a quilt from them; it provides the cure for Oma's sourpuss facade. As Oma fondly looks over the quilt, pictures of events from the woman's past cascade in a joyous full-bleed spread. Author and artist stitch together a heartfelt reminder of the comfort that only the familiar can bring. Ages 4-8.

K-Gr 4-A young girl describes her grandmother's move to a retirement home. The story begins with the two of them sharing one last moment at Oma's house. On a tour of her new residence, the woman expresses her longing for her old house and neighborhood. When Emily and her mom sort through Oma's possessions to decide what to keep or give away, everything evokes a special memory and they are left with only one pile-things to keep. The last box contains a quilt Oma made from grandpa's old shirts, and Emily suggests to her mother that they make one for grandma from her belongings. The quilt becomes Oma's treasure and helps her to adjust to the change. By the end of the story, she is content with her new home. The illustrations are done in soft pastel colors and enhance the peaceful mood of the text. This reassuring story illustrates that people can cope with major changes in their life.

Ages 4-8. In her latest offering, Bourgeois puts a loving spin on the common, heart-breaking experience of helping an elderly relative adjust to a nursing home. Oma is miserable in her new home: she can't cook for herself, and "the other old people are a bunch of nincompoops." Luckily, granddaughter Emily has a plan. As in Patricia Polacco's The Keeping Quilt (1988), the little girl and her mother create a quilt from old clothes and keepsakes to help preserve family history, and thanks to her new gift, Oma begins to adapt. Told in simple, appealing language, paired with bright, sweeping watercolors resembling fashion illustrations, the story is poignant and warm, albeit idealized. True, Oma is cranky, and Mom is sad, but the retirement home is more mansion than institution, relatives visit often, and Oma is the picture of health. For a less sunny title that delves further into the situation's complicated, sometimes scary emotions, suggest Eve Bunting's Sunshine Home (1994). Gillian Engberg

PRECIOUS book!!

Everyone in our Family adores this book!! Even though it is a children's book it is so full of love, compassion and emotion which stems from dealing with the elderly grandma having to move from her home and into assisted living. Therefore this book is very educational about the aging and how families must deal with their elderly parents at some point in their lives. The pictures are just magnificently drawn, beautiful artwork.
This book teaches children about aging and how to deal with the elderly in a compassionate and responsible way. Even Grandma is happy once she is established in her new "home" so a very happy ending!

Great read for children

This is a children's book about a family dealing with putting an older relative into an assisted living situation. The story handles a difficult change of life situation for a Grandmother,her Daughter and Granddaughter and is beautifully and timely written.
The construction of a quilt for the Grandmother is the bridge for her to leave her former life and begin the next phase. This is also a transition for the Daughter and Granddaughter as they use the Grandmother's belongings to form the quilt.
This is a great book for families dealing with this situation.

Outstanding!

I thought Reaper's Inc. - Brigit's Cross was fantastic, but the sequel, Reaper's Inc. - Rogue Reaper is astounding! Every page evokes an emotional response and keeps the reader glued to the story. B.L. Newport has a flair of writing that makes the action jump off of the page where the reader can see the action. Great read. There aren't enough stars to rate this one. I can't wait for the next one!!!

The Reaper's return

Brigit Malone is carrying out her position of Assistant Grim Reaper efficiently and to the very best of her ability. The threat made by Seamus Flannery nine months previously has not been carried out........Yet. Brigit is under no illusions though, that he is just biding his time to get to her in a weak moment.

John Blackwick has left Brigit in charge as Head Reaper while he opens up satellite offices round the world. Brigit is working round the clock crossing souls and trying her best to run the office. She can't even get home very often to spend time with her beloved Maggie.

The Bailey is acting up and the work load due to his increased activity is never ending. Brigit also has to face a ghost she'd rather not face from her past. Then the unthinkable happens, Seamus shows his hand at last. He has found a way to carry out his threat to Brigit. He is going after the one person Brigit would give up her immortal soul for. Will Seamus succeed in destroying Brigit?

Reapers Inc Brigit's Cross was a superb book. This second in the series is even better, if that's possible.

The characters are diverse and multidimensional. As the firm of Reapers Inc grows, so we meet more characters. Some nicer than others. But they all pull their own weight in progressing the story along at a nice pace, with twists and turns along the way.

It's fascinating to read about the dead interacting with the living. This series is giving me a whole new perception of a genre previously either ignored or read by those considered ghoulish. Personally, although I know these things can't and don't happen, a part of me wonders, what if.........

B.L Newport has a unique way with words. Her storytelling just makes me want to read more from her. She has created a wonderful set of characters, even when I'm not reading a Reapers Inc book, I'm thinking about them.

If anyone is unsure as to whether they will like the series, just buy the first book. The price is very reasonable too.

wonderful sequel of post-urban fantasy

ok - there I thought Brigit's Cross couldn't be topped and duh, the sequel is even better than the first book if that's possible. Newport expands her story on the post mortem part of urban fantasy in a totally delightful way and her characters are ever so vivid (pun intended). The story is exceptional and again I found myself looking for the sequel asap!
BTW the proofreading was again atrocious.

This book is very poorly written, there are so many strange word combinations and usage errors that I can only assume that English is not the primary language for the author, and that no one proof-read it for him. Additionally, most of the content will be standard knowledge for most Evernote users - save your time and money and look elsewhere for tips.

Evernote is a must have for those who are literally in need help in terms of organizing, taking notes and etc. that contains memory and intelligent capability. This could help a lot to people who are suffering from things in life and need to get their life together. The content's writing was pretty well written. After organizing, you could start focusing and contemplate what are the things to do next when getting things done. It's really relevant to read because I understand the book completely because of the words chosen and simplicity so that the readers could understand.

Following the French reoccupation of Indochina at the end of World War II, the pro-Communist Vietnamese nationalists, or Viet Minh, launched a grassroots insurgency that erupted into a full-fledged war in 1949. After nearly ten years of savage combat, the western world was stunned when Viet Minh forces decisively defeated the French Union army at the battle of Dien Bien Phu in May 1954. About the Author
Charles R. Shrader, former executive director of the Society for Military History, has taught at West Point, the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, and the Army War College. He is the author of several books, including The Withered Vine: Logistics and the Communist Insurgency in Greece, 1945–1949 and Communist Logistics in the Korean War.

The French in Indochina

This book is and very good discussion of the French War in Indochina and is not as focused merely on logistics as the title would imply although there are huge swaths of statistics and graphs which can be skimmed to move the story along.
The 4 star ranking is given because there is a general dearth of studies of the French war. Several excellent books related to Dien Bien Phu have been published recently to go with Bernard Fall's classic as well as his indispensable Street Without Joy. Some overviews of the French War have been published such as the excellent discussion in Davidson's book. The recent Embers of War is also a welcome addition. However, there is still a need for a comprehensive single volume history of the French Indochina War which is surprising given America's continuation of that war and all the 'why Vietnam' literature which abounds.This book does assist the reader in appreciating the complexities of the execution of the french pacification operations and their ultimate failure.A worthwhile book for those interested in the subject.
