Japanese Cooking: A Simple Art, by Shizuo Tsuji

When it was first published, Japanese Cooking: A Simple Art changed the way the culinary world viewed Japanese cooking, moving it from obscure ethnic food to haute cuisine.

Twenty-five years later, much has changed. Japanese food is a favorite of diners around the world. Not only is sushi as much a part of the Western culinary scene as burgers, bagels, and burritos, but some Japanese chefs have become household names. Japanese flavors, ingredients, and textures have been fused into dishes from a wide variety of other cuisines. What hasn't changed over the years, however, are the foundations of Japanese cooking. When he originally wrote Japanese Cooking: A Simple Art, Shizuo Tsuji, a scholar who trained under famous European chefs, was so careful and precise in his descriptions of the cuisine and its vital philosophies, and so thoughtful in his choice of dishes and recipes, that his words--and the dishes they help produce--are as fresh today as when they were first written.

The 25th Anniversary edition celebrates Tsuji's classic work. Building on M.F.K.Fisher's eloquent introduction, the volume now includes a thought-provoking new Foreword by Gourmet Editor-in-Chief Ruth Reichl and a new preface by the author's son and Tsuji Culinary Institute Director Yoshiki Tsuji. Beautifully illustrated with eight pages of new color photos and over 500 drawings, and containing 230 traditional recipes as well as detailed explanations of ingredients, kitchen utensils, techniques and cultural aspects of Japanese cuisine, this edition continues the Tsuji legacy of bringing the Japanese kitchen within the reach of Western cooks.

From Publishers Weekly
Easily the most comprehensive and exhaustive look at Japanese cuisine available, this groundbreaking classic marks its quarter-century anniversary in a revised edition with a new foreword by Gourmet editor-in-chief Ruth Reichl and a new preface by the late Tsuji's son, Yoshiki Tsuji. Part cookbook, part philosophical treatise, this highly acclaimed collection offers a wealth of insight for amateurs and experts alike. Every technique associated with Japanese food is described step by step in great detail, along with illustrations to guide the reader through everything from filleting fish or cleaning an octopus to rolling omelets. Sections on the Japanese meal, ingredients and selecting and cutting fish, chicken and vegetables offer great insight into the culture as well as the food. The recipe section of the book is divided by cooking method rather than food type, including grilled and pan-fried, steamed, simmered and deep-fried. Dishes range from the simple, Pan-Broiled Salmon, to the more complex, Nagasaki-Style Braised Pork, and many dishes are vegetarian. Sushi and sashimi are covered in depth, as are knives, the proper way to slice the fish, and decorative presentations. A complete guide to Japanese cooking, this collection is must-have for anyone interested in Japanese food or culture. (Apr.)

Review

. . .quite the most illuminating text around on Japanese food. . . Nigella Lawson

. . .this is much more than a cookbook. It is a philosophical treatise about the simple art of Japanese cooking. Appreciate the lessons of this book, and you will understand that while sushi and sashimi were becoming part of American culture, we were absorbing much larger lessons from the Japanese. We were learning to think about food in an entirely new way. from the new Foreword by Ruth Reichl

Requires a little investment of time
By jannielane
Japanese Cooking: A Simple Art can be intimidating unless one invests a little time in reading the introductory chapters. Recipes are arranged around cooking techniques, not ingredients. There are no chapters for "meat," "poultry" and "vegetables," but instead the recipes are organized by grilled foods, fried foods, steamed foods, sashimi, sushi, etc. In addition, it is helpful to have a basic knowledge of Japanese ingredients and Western substititions, so recipes that call for burdock root, for example, do not have to be rejected if one has a carrot to substitute. Japanese meals can be complex and contain many small dishes, or can consist of a casserole served with rice and pickles. All of these items are in Japanese Cooking: A Simple Art. Start small with a single dish, and move up to a full meal.

I'm not likely to cook a casserole that involves a whole fish head (not easy to come by in Colorado), but I make "Potato Tumble" quite often in the winter, and it is a simple comforting dish, alone worth the price of the book. The term "art" in the title tends to make the book sound demanding, but it is, in reality, full of straightforward recipes that celebrate good quality ingredients, as it the goal of modern cooking.

UPDATE: Almost two years later, and this is still my favorite Japanese cookbook, despite the fact that I keep buying other cookbooks hoping to find a rival (for what reason, I do not know). I've read this book cover to cover several times and find it entertaining and relaxing every time. I am lucky because there is a wonderful Japanese market three blocks away from my office, but I also find that I can cook many of the recipes with ingredients from my local supermarket, as long as I have the basics of soy sauce, dashi, mirin and the proper rice in my pantry.

I have several lavishly illustrated Japanese cookbooks that intimidate me because my dishes are not as dazzingly beautiful as the photographs. Since Japanese Cooking: A Simple Art is minimally illustrated, I find it less intimidating, because I don't have a pre-conceived vision of how a dish should look. I'm sure that Japanese housewives strive to create attractive meals for their families, but my guess is that on a daily basis, beauty is secondary to getting a meal on the table, just as it is in the United States.

2012 update: My original hardbound copy has split apart, so I am ordering the new edition and will be most interested to compare it to the old version.

Not just a Japanese cook book-- this is **THE** book on Japanese cooking
By BBP
I won't call Shizuo Tsuji's masterpiece a cookbook. Instead, I call it a "book on cooking". The distinction is esoteric perhaps, but important. If you think of cookbooks as paint-by-numbers manuals that merely show you the mechanics of recipe preparation with little in the way of actual food education, then by all standards, "Japanese Cooking: A Simple Art" is not a cookbook. It is a book on cooking, specifically, Japanese cooking. And not just any book on Japanese cooking. It is THE book on Japanese cooking, widely recognized and lauded as one of the best of its kind. It is a rare gem.

As a testament to the instantly recognizable caliber of this text, I offer this anecdote: I discovered it several years ago while I was living in Japan. It belonged to an American ex-pat, a foodie who spent part of his time there apprenticing in a soba shop in Akita, so he really knew his stuff. With just a casual flip through the pages (being a foodie myself), I immediately saw the value of the book and made a mental note to buy it when I came back to the US. I had forgotten about it until now, but now that I have it, I am very happy with the purchase.

True to Tsuji's pedagogical background as a culinary school founder, this book doesn't just teach recipe mechanics. It seeks to train you in the art and techniques of Japanese food preparation, with a healthy dose of etiquette, culture, philosophy, and history thrown into the mix. It is certainly ambitious in scope and perhaps not for the uninitiated.

I would say a moderate/advanced beginner level of familiarity with Japanese cuisine (or general Asian ingredients, at least) and comfort level around the kitchen is a prerequisite. Failing that, a willingness to learn and make a lot of failures. Most Americans will never have heard of many of these ingredients, and some are indeed hard to find, or impossible outside of major metropolitan areas or communities with a large Asian population. But here's an important tip: You'll find many of the most important base ingredients in Korean or Chinese supermarkets, should you live near any. Stuff like miso paste, udon, wakame, mirin, short grained rice, and seasonings are commonly sold there. Many of the vegetables used in Japanese cooking are also found there, dry or fresh. Here in NYC, I can find 95% or more of the ingredients in Chinese stores. You can buy shiso seeds on Amazon to grow yourself should you be so adventurous!

If you want a book with lots of step by step photos and glossy color blowups of finished recipes (aka, "food porn"), this is not for you. Aside from 17 pages of photos and fish illustrations at the front, the entire presentation is devoid of photography, deferring instead to line drawings. This is a good choice, as the drawings are crisp and exhibit line economy and clarity, something that is often difficult to achieve with photography. They also add a touch of class to the book.

Similarly, if you are looking for quick-fix recipes that sacrifice authenticity for ease of preparation in the American home, dishes requiring little effort and no prior cooking experience, or foods limited to ingredient available in the average American supermarket, this book is also not for you. There are plenty of other books that will fit the bill. "Good enough to pass" isn't good enough here, and Tusji makes no compromises. Some of the dishes detailed are quite laborious or difficult for beginners. For example, he teaches you how to cut whole fish for sashimi.

For true lovers of Japanese food (not just people who go to a sushi restaurant, order the "sushi deluxe" and call themselves aficionados), you owe it to yourself to order this book. What you'll get is an exhaustive overview of the diversity of Japanese food, the majority of stuff which you'll never see in Japanese restaurants in the US, however authentic they claim to be. Don't expect instant results, but instead, be patient and enjoy the journey into food education (a Zen-like approach that is not out of line with the spirit of the book). Japanese sushi chefs supposedly spend years learning how to form the rice ball before they are even allowed near the fish.

Enjoying the freshness of food and appreciating nature's seasons and its broad spectrum of flavors is the essence of Japanese gastronomy and culinary art. Enjoy the book and happy cooking!

Indispensable
By Antonio P. Manahan
This is an indispensable book to any cook's library. The original edition was written in an era of mystery. Japanese food was not known to many. In this light (or darkness) the author painstakingly explains the nuances of japanese cuisine. No other author takes such an effort.

We live an era of globalized cuisine where sushi is served at cafeterias, oriental ingredients are available everywhere, and almost every species of fish is available regardless of origin. Despite our growing familiarity with the cuisine most of us are still ignorant about what makes a meal japanese. This book has served as an introduction to cooking japanese food to most serious cooks. It is unfettered by all of the attempts at fusion japanese (cream cheese and salmon sushi, spam musubi etc.) and is strictly focused on classical cuisine. Most new cookbooks about japanese cuisine stray from the classical cuisine and lack authenticity. Japanese Cooking: A Simple Art belongs beside Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking, Jacques Pepin's La Technique, and Richard Olney's the Good Cook series. The only other way I know of learning the proper way of cooking japanese food is to work for a great japaese chef.

Liquid Lean: Developing Lean Culture in the Process Industries, by Raymond C. Floyd

While Lean practices have been successfully implemented into the process industry with excellent results for over 20 years (including the author’s own award winning example at Exxon Chemical), that industry has been especially slow in adopting Lean. Part of the problem is that the process industry needs its own version of Lean. The larger part of the problem is resistance to transformational change, a barrier that can only be overcome with effective leadership and results-oriented planning that engages rather than excludes all stakeholders.

Winner of a 2012 Shingo Prize!

Written by Raymond Floyd, an unparalleled leader of Lean transformations, Liquid Lean: Developing Lean Culture in the Process Industries provides potential process industry change agents with the no-nonsense guide needed to eliminate waste and achieve sustainable optimal efficiency. Presenting lessons in lean as they apply within the liquid industries, the book focuses on developing the four measures of Lean as defined by the Shingo Award:

  • Business Results
  • Consistent Lean Enterprise Culture
  • Continuous Process Improvement
  • Cultural Enablers
  • Illustrated with his own success stories, Floyd describes business results, Lean enterprise thinking, and policy deployment in process industry terms. He offers detailed theory, practice, and examples of continuous process improvement, and describes the leadership and defines the ethics needed to evolve and sustain Lean transformation. Floyd lays out the specific steps needed during the first six months of transformation and the benchmarks to be achieved during the first two years of implementation. All companies can benefit from Lean; this book makes sure that those who want it, know how.

If you truly want world-class performance, you will want a copy of this book on your desk as a ready reference manual.
― King Pouw, Executive Vice President, Kellogg Company

This book is about ‘walking the talk.’ Ray provides uniquely valuable insight from having personally led several organizations to achieve exceptional results applying lean principles.
― H. Eugene McBrayer. Former President, Exxon Chemical Company

    About the Author

Raymond C. Floyd is senior vice president of Suncor Energy. Prior to joining Suncor, Ray retired from Exxon Mobil, where he spent more than 20 years and where he most recently served as global manager of manufacturing services. Previously, he was with General Motors for more than 10 years. Ray is generally recognized as one of North America’s “early adopters” of lean manufacturing and is among the very first worldwide to adapt lean technologies for use in the chemical and process industries.

Following the practices described in this book, Ray led the first chemical business to receive the Shingo Prize and has led two separate businesses that have been designated as one of “America’s ten best plants” by IndustryWeek magazine. Ray is the only person to lead businesses in both chemical and mechanical manufacturing to receive that designation. As site manager for Exxon’s massive Baytown chemical plant, Ray led the team that was designated as “best maintenance organization in large industry” by Maintenance Technology magazine. Ray received the Andersen Consulting award for “excellence in managing the human side of change.”

Ray has degrees in chemical engineering, business administration, and law. He is professionally licensed as an engineer, attorney-at-law, and patent attorney. Not Only for Chemical and Oil Plants! A Must Read for Food, Pharma, and Metal as Well.
    By William C. Zeeb
From 20 years experience leading lean at Exxon as well as having led large scale breakthrough improvements in the tar sand to oil conversion process in beautiful Canada,Raymond Floyd clearly articulates many concepts and lessons learned. The book is structured following the Shingo Prize model evaluation criteria categories of:
    1) business results
    2) consistent lean enterprise culture
    3) continuous process improvement
    4) cultural enablers

His original thinking around material transformations (as opposed to assembly/filling) and the recognition of the "time independent" nature of many chemical/fermenation/ processes is refreshing and spot on. The many examples generously sprinkled throughout the book make reading it a practical exercise.

The section on the inherent inflexibility of "Liquid Lean" processes caused by the chemical nature of the production transformation includes the brilliant example of the New York Subway System.

The special importance of the role of Statistical Process Control (SPC) or Lean Six Sigma in improving Liquid Lean environments is also covered in simple, yet thorough detail.

The unique people challenges in processes with many pipes and tanks, as well as the leadership challenge in such an environment is treated as the last, but not least valuable section.

It is a great book tying lean to continuous process industries. For those of us Lean Practitioners it makes our jobs a lot easier as we can communicate to our clients in terms we and they understand. There are some wonderful examples of applying lean. One down side is the book is in need of a good editor and I have had a red pen out since I started making changes to the writing.

    By Dhugs
This book is a health bible. A fun one! Imagine going to a spa with your best friend and eating delicious food . Everything that is prepared is nutritionally balanced , clean and good for you. Welcome to the Metabolism Plan. This book is not like other " diet " books out there. This is a personalized anti-diet book. Throw all those ideas of what you think a diet is and welcome the science of finding out what makes your body happy. I am an RN and have been studying health and diet for over 30 years. Of course I have read everything. I followed the Plan as a 27 year vegetarian. I had to eat chicken on Day 3. Now that was scary at first but also eye opening. I finished the 30 Day Plan 22 pounds lighter . My thyroid was functioning well after several years of under functioning. I realized that through this amazing process anyone can shed that " middle aged" extra weight and get back to the best shape of their lives. The recipes are easy and delicious! Everything freezes perfectly. Lyn-Genet is your personal guide and friend through each chapter of the Metabolism Plan. It seems as though you have your best friend guiding you through the pages. I believe that we all need a manual on how " our" bodies work. The Metabolism Plan creates a individual private eating lifestyle based on YOU. No other diet or eating Plan does that or can offer the information that this book does.
I used to run marathons. Not anymore! I was completely over-exercising and causing my body to keep weight on due to inflammation. Now I am so happy doing my 30 minutes of yoga, sprinting and weight lifting 3-4 days a week. No more 4 hour runs for me! My body is happy and leaner than ever before.
I have seen many of my best friends and family lose 10 -20 pounds in 2 weeks and be able to discontinue their blood pressure , cholesterol, and depression medications while following the Plan. Amazing! The Metabolism Plan works for everyone. Food IS medicine . Get this book , read it and share it with all your friends.

It is an easy to follow
    By Brook P
The Metabolism Plan takes the guess work out of finding the right foods and exercise that work for you! It is an easy to follow, real world guide to finding out what works best for your particular body. I have really enjoyed the food - and it is amazing how quickly inflammation decreases when you feed your body what it wants and you exercise according to your own needs! My allergies and aches and pains have all disappeared! I would recommend this book to anyone that not only wants to lose weight but wants to feel better!

Excellent information, but extremely difficult to follow.
    By Miriam
I have to say, I so badly want to give this book a better review. It has amazing thoughts and insights in it, and has really helped me understand health in a whole new way. I feel less pressure to exercises and eat a certain way. However, I really struggle with the way the plan is set up and to follow. I read and followed her first book with great results, but so many questions left unanswered. This book has addressed more, but the plan is extremely hard to follow!! I'm a physical therapist and want to suggest this book to my patients because I love the principles, but follow through is extremely difficult (and I have no kids.) I can't imagine how moms do this. I even tried buying the audiobook with the PDFs and it's still unhelpful. The shopping lists don't align with what the recipes need. I find myself going to the grocery story EVERY day because I don't have what I need. She also doesnt provide a good plan for how to cook, except for chopping up vegetables ahead of time (which you will still probably run out of). I just love the plan but wish it was better organized and easier to use. The stress of following perfectly takes a lot of joy out of the process. I hope in future books she
    1. Provides an ACCURATE shopping list (to prepare for each day of the plan).
    2. States what to cook when.
    3. Compiles the information better (so you don't have to constantly flip between book and recipes)
4.Explains how to do your cleanse if you test positive to something on the cleanse.

DELICIOUSLY CUTE AND SERIOUSLY SEXY !!!
    By jlswainsboro/Judy Lewis
Oh! Oh! Oh! Lookie! Lookie! We have a new serial from Chloe Hawk and it totally rocks. This is the second release in The Stepbrother Bargain serial and yes, I said serial which means multiple installments and nail biting cliffhangers, so be forewarned but it's also available under the Kindle Unlimited program and it's perfect for a quick lunchtime read. The story is exciting, romantic, arousing and is told from alternating dual points of view, his and hers. The dialogue is smart, well written and flows effortlessly. The characters are captivating, engaging and sexy as sin. Hawk masterfully combines these elements into a deliciously sinful and delightfully entertaining romance. Twenty one year old Grace Sutton had much better things to do than return to Clifton to attend the wedding of her father, Dan Sutton and his ten year live-in romantic interest, Renee Croft. Yeah, much better things because anything would be better than this horse and pony show! Besides, she needed to be working to earn some money to continue her education since she certainly has never received any help at all from her family. And she certainly did NOT want to see her handsome, sexy, soon to be stepbrother, Cage Croft who has made it his life's mission to torment her made all the worse by the fact that she's always been in love with him, since the first moment he and his mother moved into her dad's home. She was only twelve but she fell desperately in love with him and does not need to be reminded of her unrequited love for the now wealthy, successful online mogul. She would muddle through this somehow. Hmmm.....I bet she will! Cage Croft can not resist the temptation of admiring the sexy blonde at the gas station and is even further tempted by her sexy long legs and luscious behind especially in those shorts she's wearing. He thought he knew everyone around his old stomping ground but he doesn't recognize her. She would make quite a delicious distraction so when he sees an opportunity, he seizes it. He offers to pay for her gas! Maybe he could steal home and land her in his bed for the night! But slowly, after a scathing look from the beautiful blonde, recognition begins to dawn and Cage suddenly realizes that the hot blonde is his soon to be stepsister. Huh? When did Grace become so hot??? Almost stepsister or not - he still wants her! And what Cage wants - he always gets! Oh my! So when family drama ensues and the situation spirals, Grace discovers that she now has nowhere to stay and now Cage insists on her staying at the hotel - with him! And there's only one bed in the room! Oh my glory! But just when things begin to heat up between Cage and Grace, she drops the mother of all bombshells - she's a virgin! Wait....What? Well, that certainly douses the flame and seems to change things! Or does it??? Talk about blowing hot and cold! After announcing to their parents that he doesn't want her in his room, Cage now won't let her leave! What the heck? Oh my! Will Cage be her savior or her teacher in all things naughty??? No spoilers from me.... I guess we'll have to read the book to find out! Buckle up my lovelies because here we go - again! Handsome, sexy, soon to be stepbrother who always gets what he wants-check! Beautiful, sassy, soon to be stepsister who has always been secretly in love with her almost stepbrother and is still a virgin-check! Family drama, manipulative self absorbed mother and a totally clueless father -check! Heated attraction, sweet romance and forbidden love-you bet! Deliciously cute, seriously sexy, completely captivating and delightfully entertaining!I can hardly wait for Part Three! Having said all that and telling you what I love about the story, I will now tell you what I don't like and the reason I have subsequently deducted a rating star. This is a serial, releasing in short 30 to 40 page installments, which I actually don't mind. What I do mind is the fact that the initial installment of only 33 pages was released on April 22, 2015 and then absolutely nothing for two months....The second installment wasn't release until June 20, 2015. That's problem number one. Problem number two is the fact that their is no notification from the author at all as to when a new installment is or will be available. None! Zip! Nada! No link to sign up for a newsletter. No link to sign up for author updates. No facebook page. No author site page. Nothing! Just endless searching to see if a new installment has been released. I follow this author on Amazon but to date, I have received not the first notification of a new release. It's quite annoying, inconvenient and not to mention, very disrespectful. I enjoy this series and would like to continue reading more from this author but it is inconsiderate for Hawk to expect loyalty from her readers when no effort is made on her part to accommodate our convenience. Although this in no way detracts from the contents of this story, it does influence my decision on whether I will read any successive books written by Hawk.

Goosebumps book were a big part of my childhood. I'd come home from school with a new book from the library, read the whole thing and would wait impatiently to get a different one the next day. Now my 7 year old loves Goosebumps and has started reading the books. She loves Slappy especially. We've been sitting down to read this one together. She'll read a couple pages out loud, then I will. She is already looking forward to reading the next one. It's great that she can enjoy something that I also did when I was growing up.

This was his first Goosebumps book and he enjoyed every moment
    By Frankiesmom2008
My 7 1/2 year old son wanted me to read something scary. I am a huge horror fan, so I couldn't read him my books (Stephen King and Anne Rice are bit too scary for his impressionable mind, I didn't want him to have nightmares). This was his first Goosebumps book and he enjoyed every moment, even the scary ones were a thrill for him. We've finished the 2nd one, "The Haunted Car' and now we're waiting on the third he chose, a story about a dog.

Microsystem Design, by Stephen D. Senturia

It is a real pleasure to write the Foreword for this book, both because I have known and respected its author for many years and because I expect this book’s publication will mark an important milestone in the continuing worldwide development of microsystems. By bringing together all aspects of microsystem design, it can be expected to facilitate the training of not only a new generation of engineers, but perhaps a whole new type of engineer – one capable of addressing the complex range of problems involved in reducing entire systems to the micro- and nano-domains. This book breaks down disciplinary barriers to set the stage for systems we do not even dream of today. Microsystems have a long history, dating back to the earliest days of mic- electronics. While integrated circuits developed in the early 1960s, a number of laboratories worked to use the same technology base to form integrated sensors. The idea was to reduce cost and perhaps put the sensors and circuits together on the same chip. By the late-60s, integrated MOS-photodiode arrays had been developed for visible imaging, and silicon etching was being used to create thin diaphragms that could convert pressure into an electrical signal. By 1970, selective anisotropic etching was being used for diaphragm formation, retaining a thick silicon rim to absorb package-induced stresses. Impurity- and electrochemically-based etch-stops soon emerged, and "bulk micromachining" came into its own.

Wonderful book on a complex subject
    By I. Gurin
In 23 chapters, Senturia brings together a dizzying array of fields of engineering necessary to design micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) and examples of MEMS products. For instance, he covers Euler beam theory, the Navier-Stokes equation, micromachining, feedback circuits, and electronic noise, and then anchors these topics with a gyroscope and a DNA amplifier, among other devices.

Senturia's approach to some chapters strikes me as a little idiosyncratic, but he does convey the principles quite well. His love for the material shines through in a way that many authors cannot manage.

Unlike books on single topics, this text cannot be used as a definitive guide to anything. Because Sentuira only has only 30 pages or so for each of the very broad topics that he covers, he doesn't cover any of them in much depth. However, the reader does get a sense of the issues that each physical domain presents. For those who need to know more, Senturia provides a short list of further reading in each chapter. I think of this book as a comprehensive starting point that can help me determine what further investigation I need.

Aesthetically, the text is somewhat lacking. The small pages are cramped compared to those of larger-format texts, and the figures are subpar.

    Review on microsystem design
    By A Customer
The book tries to cover many different topics at the same time and sometimes makes a quite messy work. However, the book has very good chapters and not so good ones. It provides a good introduction on MEMS fabrication, but a more interested reader will find difficult to fabricate MEMS with the given information. Chapters 5,6,7 and 8 are excellent, but chapters 9, 10,11 and 12 are incomplete and not easily understandable for a Electrical Engineer graduate student. Chapter 13 begins with general equations to be simplified considerably later, giving the impression to the reader that he has learned only a little about fluids. Chapter 11 is quite confusing and chapter 12 lack examples in 2D and 3D lumped models.

    Very good reference
    By Antonio Luque Estepa
This book is definitely a must-have for anyone interested in MEMS design. It's one of the classic references on microsystems that everyone should have read at least once.

The sections on mathematical modeling are especially good, and the set of detailed examples at the end are clear and illustrative.

To name some drawbacks, the chapter on fabrication is maybe a bit out of date, and more solved practical exercises are missing.

    Review
This work is itself a monument of Egypt. It consists chiefly of 419 copper engravings of Egypt's monuments made by and for Napoleon's ill-fated Egyptian campaign (1798-1801) in superb reproductions. Included are 30 color plates and 79 double plates.

In addition there is a concordance of plates, a map prepared from the larger maps made for the topographical atlas, informative notes and two fascinating, instructive essays by the editors. Gillispie, a professor of the history of science at Princeton, offers a detailed historical introduction about the invasion and its scholarly auxiliaries (150 scientists and artist of various sorts who accompanied the invading forces)... Dewachter, of the College de France, describes the Egyptian ruins that Napoleon and the auxiliaries shipped back to France...The most enduring and the most important monument to the expedition is the original masterpiece compiled by its scholars, The Description of Egypt, of which the book being reviewed may be considered about one-quarter. Magnificent. -- Frank Geitlein, Smithsonian

    From the Back Cover
Epic...immensely satisfying...an impressive achievement - Historical Novel Society

Randolph's epic four-part Viking-era saga takes place in a ninth-century world caught in the grinding gears of multiple religions - the old Saxon gods, the gods of the invading Vikings, plus the Trinity and attending saints of the hardscrabble Christianity that is trying with uneven success to implant itself in England and Ireland.

The bulk of this story-cycle centers on a young woman, Ceridwen, as she grows into womanhood and has a series of adventures in a world made increasingly violent and unpredictable by the clashing of rival armies and faiths. Randolph has extensively researched her chosen era, and her books are very intentionally pitched at a pre-modern pace, designed to unfold gradually despite their sometimes-hectic action segments. We follow Ceridwen through fractured friendships, tormented loves, and the tragedies of war.

The broader, relaxed tempo of the four novels really allows her -- and her world -- to become real in the reader's imagination, and this aura of complexity is enhanced by the fact that Randolph never stoops to one-dimensional bad guys, be they Christian monks or Viking raiders.

Each of these volumes is immensely satisfying, and the four-book sequence as a whole is an impressive achievement. - Historical Novel Society February 2015

    About the Author
I write the kind of book I want to read myself. I write about history as a way to better understand my own times. I write about people who are far better, and (I hope) far worse than myself. And beautiful objects inspire me: the hand-carved combs, skilfully wrought swords, and gemmed goblets of the world of The Circle of Ceridwen Saga. Almost everything interests me; I've studied Anglo-Saxon and Norse runes, and learnt to spin with a drop spindle. My path has led to extensive on-site research in England, Denmark, Sweden, Iceland, and Gotland - some of the most wonderful places on Earth. My other works include the novella The Tale of Melkorka, based on a story from the Icelandic Sagas, and Ride:A Novella, a retelling of the story of Lady Godiva, first published in Narrative Magazine. I've been the fortunate recipient of fellowships at the MacDowell Colony, Ledig House International, and Byrdcliffe. Hearing from readers is a special pleasure and I always answer my letters. So write to me! www.octavia.net is my website.

    A Fantastically exciting saga
    By Leith A. Masters
This second sequel picked up th pace of this series of books with gusto. Again it portrays its characters vivid personalities reflecting their strong & weak point, their wishes , desires & dreams. It's carefully researched historical data creates a world in which it's reader can feel, smell, hear, taste and witness life in the 800s in Saxony England. History in its most intriguing format; life in progress as though the reader is actually living these days. In addition, the religious conflicts of both Christians and "heathens" show the differences & similarities between the two beliefs. There is a good deal of action &battle strategy , which makes a reader sit on the edge of his/her chair during a good portion of the book. Thank you, Olivia, for this fantastic sequel. I more than look forward to Book three & I know you just released Book 5, but I hope you may even consider a Book 6! This series would make a great movie!

Ceridwen of Kilton is Her-story by choice!
    By Sarah NightBear
The saga of Ceridwen is Her-Story and I believe the timing of this series to emerge in our current time is Godddess sent! I am currently re-reading the entire series of the Circle of Ceridwen, as my desire was so strong to follow the complete and long story-line, knowing that I would have to go back to get what I had missed. Not too many written stories are worthy of a second read. This one is because it is not a romantic version of past noble cultures. But what this series does is shine a light brightly on the Feminine Goddess cultures of the Danes, the Angle-Saxon, and Welsh, with a dimmer light, almost a lurking, on the Roman Catholic left on this island from Frankland. All dominions seem to have a common thread of being related: the vying for self-sufficiency and sovereignty, with a deep reverence for the relationship to the land itself and to one another in those endeavors. Compared to our current time this saga I believe is divinely sent and impeccable: one I highly recommend following to allow the Feminine qualities of all life forms to emerge fully within us again as we seek collective power that nurtures life instead of neglecting and destroying it.

We witness in today's world such deep disconnection from the land that most people hardly know the earth as a beautiful gifted living being of abundance of which we are dependent upon. Daily headlines bombard the mind with total disregard for any sanctity in living and that in itself is a conditioning haze (vale) to the spirit of humankind, creating havoc, chaos, and unhappiness with the need to escape reality. Except escaping doesn't change realities.

It is in this second book, Ceridwen of Kilton, that I begin to grapple to unravel a couple of concepts: the price of war and peace between Lords and its relationship to the "bride-price" and the "duty-bound" beliefs of the females and males to their hierarchies. I feel these issues are for me the reader to work out and not the responsibility of the author, for more shall be reveled in its due time. However, as I witness Ceridwen desiring her husband's brother who rules Kilton (who has no male heir) I see she as female in this hereditary estate feels either a duty-bound call to provide that heir and sexual intercourse is carried out despite the church induced condemnation of doing so or she is delusional about who Cedric truly is. And I get a strong since of both a true.

In this second book of this series I view the real and the imaginary passions that drive human nature. The feminine Goddess qualities live in all the female characters, no matter which culture is being presented. And the males reverence to them is surprisingly correct only because they (the males) know 'tis true that the Goddess lives and rules life: the sea, the land, the wind, the foods, and decides decides who lives and who dies. There are keepers of Earth Wisdoms and Stories that survive isolation and impoverishment, a keeping of true records by memory with repetitive oration, not forgetting the stories of the past.

There is the reality of human desire for more, for wanting the best, to be known and equally important to others outside one's own culture and even for justifiable vengeance. But in that human chaos of proving one's worth is a moral and social obligation that is equal to its opposites of moral integrity and justice. There is a balance of cultures that has steadily declined in the governance of peoples over time and female positions were completely obliterated in governance of any realm except for that of the church. In the Ceridwen saga the females are highly intelligent, strongly nurturing while managing the functions of their Halls which they serve and govern, and are heard and revered during a time when serving was an honour and was contagious to visitors and guests. Life was worth living and wanted fully by everyone.

The males are truly warriors with the highest degree of skills in all mannerisms especially in battle, insuring the success of their Hall by being truthful story tellers of both their victories and failures: truth prevails among warriors. While the male desire for the female is strong enough to kill for, the choice is always left to the female and this is another important theme in life unfolding. The male figures did not 'take' women for themselves and were not violent with them in this historic-fiction even during the heat of passion: manliness had virtues, an honor code known among all, as did the feminine. We do get to see that mistakes were made during the heat of youthful desires and what followed as destiny or even karmic energy.

Ceridwen is of course the most wonderful person of the story-line who has three different cultures of this timeline in her memory, which define who she is, plus the new ones she will encounter in her future. From start to finish we see that the flourishing of human dignity is a personal choice and the strong bonds between females only benefits strong relationships with the males. There is no sin in the natural pagan Goddess culture (yet an honour code to keep) so I the reader experience what it is to be fully human, in love, sacrifice, decision making, and commitments. And it is exciting to learn about the Moon-Calendar Celebrations that are observed annually by the Goddess cultures.

I began to deeply relate to Ceridwen early in the saga in many aspects: having no Mother's love and nurturing to provide associated female behaviors, the social isolation, being raised by family and the church, and the excitement for a future unknown to her. With these aspects in her divine design she was unfettered of female-male skill imprinting. I sense Ceridwen's yearning for sisterly bonds which she was raised without but that destiny provides her where needs are reciprocated duly by her personal choice.

The peoples of this time-period are tribal, clans, and kingdoms who may not have been conscious of the unification of cultures of the moment but they definitely experienced the benefits of unification, isolated as they were from other civilizations and cultures. Isolation is a major theme presented deeply in the main cultural characters, which I will leave for the reader to discover on their own, being watchful for the themes that create the reality of peace and unity while the saga unfolds.

The prominent imagery that stands out to me the very most in book two is the cultural hierarchy that works as a governing system. I know another such hierarchical system among many of the Coastal Salish Villages that exists in the present and never died even though the governments forbid its practice. There is an hereditary order that is kept through bloodlines and adoption but even as importantly are the rituals and celebrations that show one's greatness among Nations in your own hall: a divine order. The giving of gifts of great worth merely make the bond a more endearing pledge or treaty. I followed slowly the segment of the treaty made between the King of Wessex and King of the Danes. This is a complete replica of the Ancient honor-code among ruling classes and was kept as a sacred document to always be honoured. Treaty breakers usually don't live long as a nation of people. The First Nations of Canada and all Indigenous Nations of North America have experienced over 500 years of treaty lie after lie until no honour exists in them. Also in this hierarchy segment our beloved figure Ceridwen gives the new born babe over to the brother and wife moments after birth: an adoption. I know a very similar story where a sister gave her new born to her sister so she would have happiness in her life. It's real love for others whose happiness is just as important as others! What about surrogate mothers for those who are not able to birth? Is this not what this ended up being? Rather than condemn the action, understand it fully for what it holds in the Sisterhood of the Goddess circle: everyone belongs to each other.

Another aspect I am enjoying learning in this second book is the archaic words so perfectly placed that make this story authentic oral history. Our greatest gift is our cultural language that usually only remotely is translatable into English. English is not a cultural language. English is a trade language like the Tchnouk Jargon of the Columbia River regions. Trade languages are garbled and lack gender identity so it cannot be cultural. All of this we see in the current attack upon Indigenous Peoples worldwide: the oppressing invaders of territory kill enough to frighten the remaining community into submission: terrorism tactics.

Another very similar protocol of these Nations that emerge in book two that are similar to the Coastal Salish nation is that of animal totems that give the people strength and many gifts of that animal: so far there is upon the marriage bed the carved Dragon and the Danes have a battle-flag symbol of the Raven. Symbolism is extremely important to cultures and the way we think, believe, and act.

Lastly, how can I not truly admire, and even covet, the Dane warchief Sidroc of Four Stones who sees Ceridwen as Shieldmaiden, one so like of his own culture but is of Welsh identity and origin. I witness Ceridwen's "destiny" as she chooses her actions along her journey. She had just re-pledged her eternal love to Cedric the one she previously saved from dying at Sidroc's Hall seven years earlier. And now whispers into Sidroc's ear to meet her at the pear grove later. The circle is unending to themes of great importance in this chapter and this is certainly one of them.

I give high regard to the author, Octavia Randolph of the Circle of Ceridwen saga, for choosing the right ancient customs as themes in each chapter. There are many such systems that work far better for life than dictatorship orders because they are sustainable systems. And did you happen to notice and research the list of medicinal herbal treatments that were freely given in book two? I did and believe me, they are worth their weight in gold, as is a second reading of Ceridwen of Kilton.

The saga of Ceridwen is Her-Story and I believe the timing of this series to emerge in our current time is Goddess sent!

Isolation is a major theme presented deeply in the main cultural characters, which I will leave for the reader to discover on their own, being watchful for the themes that create the reality of peace and unity while the saga unfolds.

who has loved her for years and calls her Shield Maiden

This is my second reading of book two. The first reading was done quickly and voraciously, as I could not get enough of Ceridwen's story. Now, I have noticed the richness of the character's and their depth of emotions. I have witnessed Ceridwen's courage in times of war, and her bond with Geric enabling the survival of brother Godwin, through her verbal instruction. She and Geric surrendered her child to ensure Godwin have an heir, bringing back his estranged wife to Kilton. And lastly, the Dane man named Sidroc, who has loved her for years and calls her Shield Maiden, visits Kilton in times of peace. Meeting in secret, she remains faithful to Geric, while he reaffirms his love. Yet she thinks of him in her quiet moments, and will send her son Ceric to him for training when he is 12. This book is a time of war and struggle, as the history of Wessex, the invading Danes and King Alfred unfolds.
