The actual raid was planned and�led by paratrooper Major Otto Mors from the Fallschirmjager-Lehr Bataillon, but SS Haupsturmf�hrer Otto Skorzeny grabbed much of the laurels of this operation.

Despite unfavorable terrain for a gliderborne landing - including large boulders and steep cliffs near the landing zone - most of the German gliders succeeded in landing atop the Gran Sasso and the assault force was able to move in before the stunned Italian defenders could organize a response or eliminate Mussolini. This volume shows how Skorzeny failed to follow the plan and jeopardized the operation with his rash behavior, including a risky decision to fly Mussolini off the mountain�using a light Fiesler Storch aircraft. The German raiding force achieved all their objectives without firing a shot. Although the rescue of Mussolini failed to keep Italy on the Axis side, it did serve as a valuable propaganda boost for Germany in the face of defeats in Italy and the Soviet Union, as well as pointing toward a new dimension in warfare.

About the Author
Dr Robert A. Forczyk has a PhD in International Relations and National Security from the University of Maryland and a strong background in European and Asian military history. He is currently a lieutenant colonel in the US Army Reserves and has served 18 years as an armour officer in the US 2nd and 4th Infantry Divisions and as an intelligence officer in the 29th Infantry Division (Light). He is a well-respected author who has published a number of titles include Panther vs T-34 in Osprey's Duel series.

A more accurate picture of the event

Clouded by Otto Skorzeny's account of the rescue of Benito Mussolini from his Gran Sasso prison, the operation has been characterized as a daring raid by SS "Commandos." Now, thanks to Dr. Forczyk, we have not just a more accurate picture of the raid, how it was planned and Skorzeny's TRUE role in the operation but we have it in a book which is well-written and informative without being boring.

The 1943 German raid on the Gran Sasso was an effort to rescue the deposed fascist dictator Mussolini in order to keep at least part of Italy on the Axis side of the war. Ground and parachute drops were impractical so gliders were employed to bring in a rescue team in a daring operation which succeeded at least in part because Mussolini's captors were hesitent and unsure of how to proceed. Skorzeny's role, hyped in his postwar memoirs, may have actually endangered the mission and would certainly have done so had the circumstances been slightly different.

Well-illustrated with photographs, maps and artwork this is a superb work on this subject. At the very least it rates as an excellent introduction to this subject.

Skorzeny under the microscope!

Excellent! This is the first source I have read, in which Otto Skorzeny is put under the microscope. It has, since ready this volume, not been the last. I do wish more of Oblt. Georg Freiherr von Berlepsch and his men had been included, rather that devoting so much space to debunking the Skorzeny myth along with his canteen commandos. but one has to start somewhere, and needless to say, I am a fan of Dr. Forczyk.

Good book

Good book that provides sound details on the successful operation to rescue Italian dictator Mussolini. While Otto Skorzeny gets much of the credit along with his SS troops the book questions the depth of their contribution. The book provides information which states that Skorzeny was very good with politics and did a good job of selling himself. He used his ties in the SS to get him positions he really wasn't qualified for according to the book. It mentions how most of his qualifications center around automotive mechanics. The truth is probably somewhere in between. The book gives Kurt Student most of the credit for the planning of the operation along with the well documented skill of the Fallschirmjager of the Luftwaffe. Good book worth buying if you enjoy special operations.

I would give this whole love story a 10 star rating if I could!! I loved this book just as much as the other ones. Probably more just because I was so excited to find out the author had written another one. The love story of Rob & Casey is just so beautiful. I love everything about it. I would read another book if the author decided to continue on with these two. Don't listen to any negative reviews. If you have loved this series then you will love this book as well. It has all the great parts I have grown to love from this author. It is sexy and sweet and tragic all rolled into one. Would highly recommend to anyone. I am just so sad this series is over. What a happily ever after for Rob and Casey though!

I LOVE this series!! I have it in my top 10 of all time. Another great installment in this series that I can't get enough of.
Mackenzie and Casey have been to hell and back always trying to live their epic love story. So many things have happened to them but they still learn to live and love each other. Family and connection is what these books are about and its EPIC.

This was another great book in the Jackson's Falls series.
When Casey has another miscarriage all her previous heart aches catch up with her and she finds herself in a black hole she can't seem to find her way out of. While Rob realizes his passion for performing on stage hasn't gone away.
Love helps them both through these hard times and they finally find their way back in to the light.
Really loved this book.

He has written numerous books on a diverse range of topics, from computing technology to digital desktop publishing to sled dog racing. He worked as the department head of special assignments for Hubert Burda Media in Munich, Germany, where he also served as chief editor for a winter sports website. After eight years as a freelance film critic in Los Angeles, Rico now lives in Germany and devotes his time to digital photography and compact camera systems. A Real Step to More Diverse, and So More Effective PTSD Treatment

Both 1st & 2nd editions present research evidence and clear treatment guidelines for a wide variety of treatments: Psychological Debriefing, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Psychopharmacology, EMDR, Psychodynamic Therapy, Hypnosis, Couples/Family Therapy, Group Therapy, and "Creative" Therapies. There's even a section on therapeutic interventions based in schools.

But several strong changes clearly distinguish this 2nd edition. Whereas the 1st edition had 12 different effective treatments, the 2nd edition has 18. Most important for those of us who work with children, PTSD therapy for children and teens is given MUCH more prominence in the 2nd edition. One chapter is devoted exclusively to the special issues of assessing children/teens for PTSD. Five chapters are devoted to therapies for children and teens.

There's an important new chapter on treating not only PTSD, but PTSD with co-morbid disorders, with other psychological diagnoses, such as depression, panic, borderline personality disorder, psychosis and substance abuse. This chapter has long been needed. As all clinicians know, most people with PTSD have other problems, other diagnoses. Depression or dysthymia, for example, is found in over almost two-thirds of those with PTSD. And among men, about half also have a substance abuse problem. The section on substance abuse - the longest in this chapter - is certainly most welcome!

Also new in the 2nd edition are three chapters on "early interventions" -- treating trauma right after it happens, hopefully reducing the chances that PTSD will become more long-term or even chronic. And we can certainly rejoice in having, here & ready-to-hand, updated research that's been conducted since the 1st edition was published in 2000.

While a solid improvement from the first edition, however, the 2nd edition has four serious omissions. First, there's no chapter on family therapy devoted for children and teens. Many child/teen clinicians, I suspect, have found that a family therapy component can certainly be important in helping a child heal from trauma. If nothing else, parents often benefit from being part of their child's therapy. Of course they want to do something. And as we all know, when the parents benefit, the children usually benefit, too.

Two serious omissions come from this book's near-exclusive "Treatments" bias. This means that treatments are considered the main avenue for client healing. Research in the past decade has demonstrated that this just isn't true. (See, for example, the recent research on treating PTSD in the 2nd edition, 2010, of The Heart and Soul of Change: Delivering What Works in Therapy.) And most clinicians who work regularly with severe PTSD know that building an effective therapist/client relationship is at least, if not more challenging and important with many clients than the treatments used. "Effective Treatments for PTSD" exclude most "relationship-oriented" therapies, client-centered therapies. The exceptions are psychodynamic and "Emotionally-Focused Therapy". Sadly EFT, here, is restricted to couples therapy. (EFT, by the way, has been proven effective with some traumatized teens.)

The third serious omission, also coming out of this "treatments-only" bias, is that incorporating client strengths, client resources, client feedback and client engagement, while not excluded, isn't emphasized nearly to the extent that its importance demonstrated in research suggests.

The fourth serious omission is no chapter on what's called compassion fatigue & vicarious traumatization. Since the 1980's, we've known that therapists who treat a lot of PTSD are, themselves, highly at-risk for becoming traumatized by proxy, by working with so many traumatized clients. I realize that this isn't an "Effective Treatment". But given how common, and how serious this problem is, given how many good therapists burn out in treating PTSD, I think, frankly, that it's irresponsible not to include a chapter devoted to recognizing and treating this problem. Certainly therapist compassion fatigue makes any treatment much less effective.

But even with these serious omissions, I strongly recommend buying this new, 2nd edition. Given that research shows so many treatments can be effective, and that newer research is showing that, for treatments to be most-effective, they need to closely fit the client's preferences and needs, the diversity presented here, and its research backing, is most welcome. And in the "Introduction", the editors take a refreshingly clinically-reasonable, non-dogmatic position on the need for more treatments and treatment diversity.

"...clinicians following these guidelines should not limit themselves only to these approaches and techniques. All current treatments have limitations; either not all patients respond to them, patients drop out of treatment, or, for various reasons, therapists are not comfortable using a particular intervention. To promote the development of improved treatments, creative integration of new approaches driven by sound theoretical principles is most welcome in the field. Promoting new treatments ultimately enhances and optimizes treatment outcome, thus contributing to optimal public health across national borers."

So buy this book! And maybe, for best results, however, use it in conjunction with the 2nd edition, 2010, of "The Heart and Soul of Change".

Note: for treating what's coming to be called "Complex PTSD", you may want to add the recent, Treating Complex Traumatic Stress Disorders: An Evidence-Based Guide. This hard-to-treat & debilitating reaction to severe and prolonged trauma often needs its own types of interventions, as well as its own special therapeutic relationships.

Live Hands: A Key to Better Golf

I bought a copy of this book because I had just finished writing a book on the hand action of the golf swing and I wanted to compare notes. My book is called The Golf Swing: It's all in the Hands. I've always enjoyed reading golf books that were written long ago and this book doesn't disappoint in entertaining. On page ix of the forward, I quote the following, "The primary reason Prain settles on the hands is that they "are the only part of the player in direct contact with the club." ..." This statement struct a chord with me because it is exactly the reason why I wrote my book. I wasn't aware of Eric Prain's book until after I had published my book. From my perspective it was nice to connect with the thoughts of an author from fifty years ago. I believe nothing has changed in fifty years and so Prain should be given credit as a forward thinker. His book was originally published in 1946. You can read his book in a day. The general ideas raised in the book are food for thought for any golfer. Personally, I agree with the ideas discussed in his book. The book is a little short of detail. In contrast, my book is very detailed. Personally, I think a combination of Eric Prain's book with mine makes for a well rounded read on the subject of the hand action of the golf swing. There simply are not very many books out there written on the subject of the hand action of the golf swing, let alone available for purchase.

Live hands is a dead book

The book promises more than it delivers. There is no real substance in it and the prose, which may have entertaining in England in the forties, is boring and frustrates one trying to get at the meat of the matter. It also seems to be a spin off of the "swing the clubhead with your hands" technique in Ernest Jones' Swing the Clubhead, which in contrast to this book, is both entertaining and instructive. By the way, the 1952 copyright edition of the Jones book is much better than the 1937 one.
