My son said its just as good as the class he took at the Community College. But better. He said the explanations are easier to understand. He missed all 5 tests by 4 - 5 questions. He wanted to make sure the next time he aced it. He feels confidence he will next March.

Wife has PASSED!

My wife passed her Test. She went from a 340 to a 410. I bought it for her because other reviews said that this BOOK is great for its explanation and methodology. Well about 2 months later she felt REALLY PREPARED. Now my wife is ready to LEARN SOME REAL SKILLS. And don't worry that this book is from 2001 or so... Remember math hasn't changed much since the guys that first used. Egyptians and Greeks.

I used this book to tutor a 28 year old who had always been afraid of doing math - the book is simple yet comprehensive - on some subjects there could be a little more "color commentary" in descriptions - all in all an excellent companion for any high school student struggling with math - just know your grade school multiplication tables and simplest grade school math skills -follow instructions - do the tests in pencil - repeat tests often until GED Mathematics (Steck-Vaughn Ged Series)you consistently score 80-90% - you'll do fine on your GED Math test... Not Quite the Solution I Was Expecting

I love the FT, and despite having listened over & over to the recordings scripted in this book, there were elements I could never make out--stuff buried under multiple layers of sound (e.g. Ralph Spoilsport), or words here & there I just couldn't make out. At last, I found and bought this fabled and sought-after book, thinking it would explicate all--but no. Some of the dialogue--the stuff buried under other stuff--simply isn't here. My guess it was improv'd and therefore unscripted.
Howsoever, I don't regret buying it; it did indeed make clear what I hadn't understood or had misheard, and it's great how it ties stories from the first four albums together into a single surreal odyssey. But it wasn't all I'd hoped for, hence the deducted star. My rating shouldn't and probably won't sway any FT fan from getting this if it's available.

FT's Big Book of Plays: Surreal Humour / Social Criticism

We need a term for all those expressions we utter so commonly these days: little soundbites, references drawn from films or commercial ads, that sum up so many situations, so perfectly, that they get used over and over again and enter common parlance. "Where's the Beef?" is an example. These references obviously don't just serve to succinctly express a sentiment; they reinforce our sense of belonging to the community of people who get the reference. I am a member of one such community, for whom the works of FT remains a mother load of these kinds of expressions; I literally use them daily. When I utter one of these expressions half-consciously at a party, and someone I don't know recognizes and riffs the next line out, there is a bond revealed, as strong as those between veterans of the Lincoln Brigade. Still, this is not even the central genius of FT.
Neither is it to be found in their unequalled mastery of the subtlest details of the aural landscape of the late 20th century, as filtered through it's various media: the distinct equalizations, dynamics compression and fidelities of various radio and TV talkshows, news programs and ads, the educational 16 mm film with its invariably bad framing loops. FT's ear for such textures, and their perfect mastery at reproducing them, is simply instrumental: this is a vehicle, as is their vaudville humour, for something much more important.
The legacy of this troupe will be how perfectly they realized the attitude of my generation toward its own culture: that we found (and still find) its reality and portend so surreal, so alien, and so odious, that the only way to adequately represent it was with social criticism in the form of psychodelic satire. FT brought precognition to that effort as well, although prophesy is not much appreciated by subsequent generations, because the world that was prophesied is now their context, their backdrop, and they find it unremarkable that their reality was once presented as just one disturbing, even improbable, possible future.
Given that during the late sixties, pop music defined (not expressed, defined!) the historical moment, the Record Album was the only possible medium for this literature. And yes, for many of us, FT played a significant role in that moment-definition.
These days, music rarely even truly expresses the historical moment, much less defines it. So if you manage to find and read a copy of FT's Big Book of Plays, and you've never heard the performance of these pieces, you may very well not get it. Instead, buy "Dwarf" or "Bozos", put on a good set of headphones, drop a hit of something clean, and enter their world. Later, when you're "grounded, safe and sound...trailing clouds of glory..." you can get out that Big Book and marvel at all the scripting that subliminally zipped right by you. By then, hopefully, you'll be changed forever.

"The Big Book of Plays" is the first of two books put out by the legendary comedy troupe the Firesign Theatre (Phil Austin, Peter Bergman, Philip Proctor, and David Ossman) during their heyday (it was published in 1972). It is a collection of pieces from the troupe's first four albums. As such, it allows the reader to finally fully penetrate the oft-times impenetrable texts of the group's records. Good Supplement - Possible Recommendation

I teach AP CSA and have looked at all of the most current AP prep books in hopes to finding a quality one for all of my students to use and recommend to buy. I just received my book today and spent the past hour scanning it. First, when I received the package and opened the book, the first 15 pages had their corner folded, which is not acceptable when shipping a brand new book. The topics are laid out well with thorough explanations of concepts, but not necessarily all of the detail required. Each topic has basic and advanced questions. Advanced are definitely worthy of AP-like questions and the basics; some are, some aren't, but the basics can be a great way of leading in to the advanced. The practice exams at the back look great as well and I appreciate the free response practice items throughout - this is an area this book thrives over others.

In short - if I am going to recommend a book for students...
Explanations - Barron's 7th edition - sometimes a little more confusing, but has more detail or 5 Steps to a 5 - easier to read, but you will miss some key minor details.
Multiple Choice - Barron's - there are more, harder, and detailed explanations for each section.
Free Response - 5 Steps to a 5 - they have a lot of early ones to ease students into it and explain very nicely results for an "open-ended" type answer.

Overall, I would rate this book a 4 out of 5. I would love more than a handful of multiple choice questions per topic. I also do not appreciate having pages bent before I even open it.

This is my real response, not influenced by anyone but myself and I bought this book with my own money. :-)

An excellent resource

The authors really have tried to include everything that could help a modern student prepare for the AP exam for Computer Science A. My teen will be studying independently for the exam after taking a year long course and the tools included in the book are extremely helpful.

First of all, the book recommend that you use McGraw Hill's test planning app to customize your study schedule. The app gives you a day by day schedule and also extra practice questions.

To figure out where you stand, you take a diagnostic exam that is half the length of the actual exam. This allows the student to figure out areas of weakness which they can focus on in their preparation for exam day.

Another thing my teen likes about the book is that there are two levels of questions for each subject area - basic and advanced. Books that are filled with only advanced questions can be intimidating and this book does manage to make the topics seem quite accessible.

Beyond that the book has all the standard topics - structure of the exam, each topic explained, test taking strategies, explanations for multiple choice as well as free response problems, Java code Solutions, 3 practice tests and errors to avoid.

All in all, this a well planned an thorough guide written with today's student in mind.

Lots of great information

First, let me say that this is for my son, as he is the one taking the AP course and I thought this book will be helpful. We've only had it a week but so far he is enjoying it... or 'enjoying' it as much as a kid enjoys during doing work during summer break! Since he won't be taking the actual exam for quite a while, I can't yet say if it helps his scores on the AP but I do believe that if he does all the book has in it, he'll definitely fare much better than without it!
It has 3 practice exams as well as a free app to customize his study schedule. This is incredibly useful, as my son easily gets off track so every little organizational idea or app truly helps!
Inside the book it is broken into many 'steps'. Step 1 is to set up the study program as well as what you need to know, and frequently asked questions about the exam. Step 2 is to determine your test readiness and encourages doing the diagnostic exam. Step 3 is all about strategies for success and step 4 is to review the knowledge you need to score high, going into various concepts as what is java, software developer, OOP, Choosing your IDE, and others. Here the book really dives into the information and covers many concepts and breaks down the chapters in the framework of these concepts. Finally, step 5 is titled Building your Test-Taking Confidence.

Also incredibly handy and useful is the appendix. It is filled with goodies, such as a quick reference guide and list of keywords in Java as well as other aspects in addition to an area that lists other online resources.

Both my son and I are excited to utilize this book and I do hope it is truly helpful for him! It looks like a good, well-organized book that will help keep him on track and aid in a successful year and exam!
