This book is great!

It is thorough and comprehensive, covering the latest research on gender differences across numerous domains, including physical/mental health, relationships, communication, and the workplace. It considers the theoretical explanations surrounding the psychology of gender while still successfully evaluating the extant empirical literature. Helgeson has done an excellent job of updating this edition. She is also careful to acknowledge the intersection of gender with factors like age, race, and sexual orientation. The "do gender" exercises in the book also make for excellent small group projects for students.

eBook terrible!

The eBook edition is awful! It is poorly edited and formatted. It is the worst eTextook I have ever used. I hope the hard copy is better! There are no built in flash cards. There is no section at the bottom of the screen where you can see where you are in a chapter and advance ahead that way. This eBook is like someone just typed a PDF version of the book and provided zero interactive or study features common to digital textbooks. I am sorry I purchased it.

Childhoods Real and Imagined explores and charts the relation of dialectical critical realist concepts to many aspects of childhood. Each chapter summarises key themes from several academic disciplines and policy areas, combining adults’ and children’s reported views and experiences and filtering these through a critical realist analysis. The four main chapters deal with the more personal aspects of childhood in relation to the body, interpersonal relations, social structures, and the person, soul or self. The second volume will widen the scope to include the impact on children and young people of present policies relating to ecology, economics, ideas of social evolution or progress, and ethics. Each chapter demonstrates how children are an integral part of the whole of society and are often especially affected by policies and events.

About the Author

Donna Wittmer received her Ph.D. from Syracuse University in 1985 in Child, Family, and Community Studies. She was a professor of Early Childhood Education at the University of Colorado for 17 years and received Emerita status in January 2008. Donna is the author of numerous articles in Early Childhood Education Journals, including Young Children, and the co-author to a variety of early childhood education and development texts, including The importance of peers in the early years (2009) published by ZERO TO THREE Press.

Sandy Petersen is the Director of Outreach, Research, and Innovation at the Early Head Start National Resource Center at ZERO TO THREE.� Her previous work includes directing training and technical assistance for early childhood at the Colorado Department of Education, heading a grant to explore inclusion of medically fragile infants and toddlers in community child care, and providing infant-parent psychotherapy at the Infant- Parent Program in San Francisco. Petersen created and teaches the Special Needs workshop in the Program for Infant Toddler Care.

Great Learning Material

This a very good book if you want to understand child development. It goes through each age group, and developmental domain, such as social/emotional, cognitive, gross motor/fine motor, and language. I had to get this for a child development class, and I liked it. It also goes over some child development theories and some famous theorists. I love working with kids, and I like psychology, so it was a great read!

About the Author

Arthur Aron, Ph.D.

Dr. Aron is Professor of Psychology at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, Director of the Stony Brook Interpersonal Relationships Lab (http://www.psychology.stonybrook.edu/aronlab-), and Co-Director of the Stony Brook Social, Cognitive, and Affective Neuroscience Center.� His research centers on the self-expansion model of motivation and cognition in personal relationships and intergroup relations, including the neural underpinnings and real-world applications of the model to close relationships and intergroup relations. He has published more than 100 scientific papers, including two foundational papers in collaboration with Dr. Elaine Aron on his basic theoretical model that have more than 500 citations; and his earliest one, on the “shaky bridge study,” has become a classic in the field and is cited in nearly every introductory psychology text, social psychology text, and psychology methods text published in the last 20 years. He currently serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Psychological Science, Personal Relationships, and Journal of Social and Personal Relationships. He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, the Association for Psychological Science, the Society of Personality and Social Psychology, and the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues.� He has received major grants from the National Science Foundation, the Templeton Foundation, the Fetzer Foundation, and the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada.� He recently received the Distinguished Research Career Award from the International Association for Relationship Research.

Elliot J. Coups, Ph.D.

Dr. Coups is Associate Professor of Medicine at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and a faculty member in the Division of Public Health Science at The Cancer Institute of New Jersey. He received his PhD in social/health psychology from Rutgers University and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in cancer prevention and control at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Dr. Coups’ primary area of research focuses on understanding and promoting health-related behaviors among cancer survivors. His research in this area has included identifying the prevalence and correlates of physical activity among lung cancer survivors, testing the feasibility of an Internet-based weight loss intervention for colorectal cancer survivors, and examining longitudinal changes in health behaviors among individuals completing treatment for colorectal cancer. Dr. Coups also conducts research to identify the prevalence, patterns, and correlates of behavioral risk factors for cancer among the general adult population. The goal of Dr. Coups’ research program is to develop innovative, theory-driven health behavior interventions that enhance the quality of life of cancer survivors and those at risk for cancer. Dr. Coups has published more than 40 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, and his research has been supported by grants from the Lance Armstrong Foundation and the National Cancer Institute.

Dr. Aron is a researcher, writer, and clinical psycholgist in private practice.� Her most widely cited work focuses on the innate temperament/personality trait of sensory processing sensitivity, with research ranging from in-depth qualitatve interviews to laboratory experiments, representative surveys, and neuroimaging studies.� She is also well known for her research in collaboration with Dr. Arthur Aron on close relationships, including two seminal books.� She has published more than 40 research papers and has given more than 100 invited talks, colloquia, and continuing education workshops for professionals.� Her just released book Psychotherapy and the Highly Sensitive Person(Routledge, 2010) represents the integration of her research with her clinical experience.� In addition to her academic writing, she has published eight books for the general public based on her research, including the best-selling The Highly Sensitive Person, translated into 14 languages, and The Highly Sensitive Child, translated into 10 languages(both Broadway Books), and the just released The Undervalued Self (Little, Brown, 2010).� She has also published a best-selling novel.

They do their best to make it accessible

If nothing else, this book recognizes that those who are in the social sciences may have had difficult experiences with statistics in the past that focused purely on the formulas. This book can't make stats 'easy', but it does its best to make it understandable - breaking down the reasoning behind each formulaic move so that you can truly understand the meaning behind the numbers. If you have an option of taking a stats class with this book as opposed to a straight stats for beginners, I'd recommend this one any day.

I'd like to say that first off, I can't stand that the majority of the reviews here are about the delivery of this POS textbook. This is not Ebay!

What is inside the book is what counts and this book for me is an absolute nightmare. I have never taken a statistics class before and being an online student with no time and no access to tutors is an absolute disaster. This book is of no use to a person who is not previously familiar to statistics. It provides no effective examples of the problems for a person to effectively reverse engineer. If you have this book for an online class, you should seek a different means to learn statistics. This book was written with an assumption that you will retain 92% of what you read every week. I'm paying about $1100 for this class and I want a refund for the book!

A dreadful little book. It starts out well, but beyond the first few pages, I felt it was horrid. Admittedly, I'm not a math person, but even so, this was a tough one to wade through. I'm glad I only rented it and that it's out of my hands, never to be picked up again.

An excellent appreciation of the "old" ways

This trilogy was one I read many years ago and only returned to recently. On this reading it was an even better - recalling in detail a life which has totally gone now but has a wonder and joy in it which we can no longer experience. On having her fortune told - the main character was told she would be loved by people she had never met - for once astrology worked. An excellent piece of literature.

Beautiful descriptions of hamlet living and a time long past

I came to this book by way of the beautifully-filmed series Lark Rise to Candleford (Seasons 1-4). The show is a stellar production with a great ensemble cast and heartwarming stories, and I had to read the source work which inspired the series. This edition of Flora Thompson's Lark Rise to Candleford contains the trilogy, i.e. "Lark Rise", "Over to Candleford", and "Candleford Green".

As for the work itself, I have found it to be most illuminating. The trilogy has been seen as a sort of semi-autobiographical work, and the character of Laura as seen to reflect Thompson. The amazing thing about this work is that Ms. Thompson wrote it about forty years after the events she witnessed. The stories reflect the glory days of England's pastoral life, and there is a sense of idealism in the portrayal of people's lives back then, almost as if these were the best of times, despite the poverty of many of the inhabitants of the villages. Ms. Thompson's writing may gloss over the serious problems affecting the people in the hamlets at that time, but it is nevertheless an important work that adds to the various collections of memoirs and journals describing the English countryside and the lives of the inhabitants of the hamlets surrounding it.

I loved reading about the little details of hamlet living, and even though the descriptions can at times be almost tedious in their details, I savored each and every word. It made me yearn for a simpler, less frenetic life, one that seems almost impossible in today's hectic, technology-inundated world.

I also enjoyed reading about the characters, some of which are found in the BBC drama adaptation. It was rather illuminating to read about Robert Timmins, a strong-minded, independent, proud man who is seen as a father figure among the Lark Risers in the TV show. In the book, I learned that Robert grew to become a very bitter man who never quite fit in with his surroundings, and whose life eventually lapsed into degeneracy!

This is a wonderful work for many reasons, but most of all for eliciting one's feelings of nostalgia for long gone days. One of the passages in the book reads,
"Candleford Green was but a small village and there were fields and meadows and woods all around it. As soon as Laura crossed the doorstep, she could see some of these. But mere seeing from a distance did not satisfy her; she longed to go alone far into the fields and hear the birds singing, the brooks tinkling, and the wind rustling through the corn, as she had when a child. To smell things and touch things, warm earth and flowers and grasses, and to stand and gaze where no one could see her, drinking it all in." I too long to walk far into the fields, and to have the luxury of time to do it!

A detailed picture of a time that has passed

Flora Thompson wrote about what she knew - a rural life in a small village near Oxford, and in such a way that you feel you are there with her. This book was adapted for the British TV show "Lark Rise To Candleford," but be aware that the book itself has less of the interpersonal relationships that are developed in the show and much more description of the environment. As an Anglophile and lover of British folk music, I thoroughly enjoyed this.
