I have been a big fan of TWD since almost ...

I have been a big fan of TWD since almost the beginning. I started reading it in college and am still picking up the new graphic novels just about as soon as they comes out. Kirkman keeps it interesting, at least for me. And he’s done just that again, spectacularly, with this new installment. He manages to tease you a bit, show you how well everyone is doing then gives you a taste of the new threat (or threats) lurking in the dark waiting for Rick and his band of communities to face them. This graphic novel probably did more for me than any other, not so much for content or new characters but for the possible gravity of the new assault they will soon find themselves under and what it will mean for characters and WD story universe. I’m sitting here the day after and I keep thinking about it, wondering how things will go for all our varied walking dead characters. Really well done, reinvigorating the story line for a whole bunch more zombiepocolypse story to come! Buy now!

Finally the Negan thing is over and the story gets a chance to move forward. To be honest I was getting very annoyed with Rick, he had plenty of chances to kill the bastard and he didn't. At least that part is over and we get to see a few years into the future of how the community evolves and the new dangers that lurk. Which, by the way, very cool idea for a new antagonist(s).

as far as a product review, this is difficult. It is the same production team and publishing house as the priors, so paper, ink, etc. quality remain consistent. I love that they're available pre-order, and usually come with a bit of a price discount! I got this as promised, and enjoyed it immensely. I won't venture into a story summary, or plot discussion, as there are better forums for that.

About the Author

James M. Henslin,�who was born in Minnesota, graduated from high school and junior college in California and from college in Indiana. Awarded scholarships, he earned his Master’s and doctorate degrees in sociology at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. After this, he was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship from the National Institute of Mental Health, and spent a year studying how people adjust to the suicide of a family member. His primary interests in sociology are the sociology of everyday life, deviance, and international relations. Among his numerous books�are�Sociology: A-Down-to-Earth Approach�(Allyn &�Bacon, available in three versions); Social�Problems (Allyn &�Bacon); and�Down-to-Earth � Sociology: Introductory Readings�(Free Press). He has also published widely in sociology journals, including Social Problems and American Journal of Sociology.

While a graduate student, Jim Henslin taught at the University of Missouri at St. Louis. After completing his doctorate, he joined the faculty at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, where he is Professor Emeritus of Sociology. His two favorite activities are writing and traveling. He especially enjoys visiting and living in other cultures, for this brings him face to face with behaviors and ways of thinking that he cannot take for granted, experiences that “make sociological principles come alive.”

A Delicate Subject Done Well

Great textbook for teaching Social Problems. Henslin gets to the point from chapter 1 on. There is no delicate way to address some of the social problems in society. However, Henslin brings up each challenge in a way that allows students to view the problem from both sides and then research and take a stand. I had students participate in debates on many of the social issues used from this text.

About the Author

John E. Campbell, MD, FACEP
Dr. Campbell received his BS degree in pharmacy from Auburn University in 1966 and his medical degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1970. He has been in the practice of Emergency Medicine for 40 years, practicing in Alabama, Georgia, New Mexico, and Texas. He became interested in prehospital care in 1972 when he was asked to teach a basic EMT course to members of the Clay County Rescue Squad. He is still an honorary member of that outstanding group. Since then, he has served as medical director of many EMT and paramedic training programs. He recently retired as the Medical Director for EMS and Trauma for the State of Alabama.

From the original basic trauma life support course developed an international organization of teachers of trauma care called “International Trauma Life Support, Inc.,” or ITLS. Dr. Campbell has served as its president since the inception of the organization.
Dr. Campbell is the author of the first edition of the Basic Trauma Life Support textbook and has continued to be the editor through to this new edition, now entitled International Trauma Life Support for Emergency Care Providers. He also is the coauthor of Homeland Security and Emergency Medical Response and Tactical Emergency Medical Essentials.

He was a member of the first faculty of Emergency Medicine at the School of Medicine, University of Alabama at Birmingham. In 1991 he was the first recipient of the American College of Emergency Medicine’s EMS Award for outstanding achievement of national significance in the area of EMS. In 2001 he received the Ronald D. Stewart Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Association of EMS Physicians. He is currently retired from clinical practice and resides on his farm in Montgomery, Alabama.

Roy L. Alson, PhD, MD, FACEP, FAAEM
Roy L. Alson is an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine and Director of the Office of Pre-hospital and Disaster Medicine at Wake Forest. He is also an Associate Professor at the Childress Institute for Pediatric Trauma at Wake Forest University. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia in 1974 and both his PhD and MD from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine of Wake Forest University (1982, 1985). He completed his residency in emergency medicine at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and is board certified in both emergency medicine and emergency medical services by the American Board of Emergency Medicine.

His EMS career began in the early 1970s as an EMT in New York City. As a graduate student, Dr. Alson became a member of the Winston-Salem Rescue Squad and began working for the Forsyth County EMS as an EMT. Upon completion of his residency, Dr. Alson returned to Wake Forest University and the Forsyth County EMS system, serving as Assistant Medical Director for 14 years and Medical Director for the last 12 years. He remains actively involved in the education of EMS personnel.
Dr. Alson’s involvement with ITLS dates to the 1980s. He served as the North Carolina Chapter Medical Director for 15 years. Since the 1990s he has been a member of the editorial board for ITLS as well as a contributing author. With this edition, he joins Dr. Campbell as co-editor in chief.

Along with EMS, disaster medicine is an area of interest. Dr. Alson serves as the Medical Director for the North Carolina State Medical Response System (NC SMAT) program. He has served as the Chairman of the Disaster Preparedness and Response Committee for American College of Emergency Physicians, as well as a member of the EMS Committee for the American Academy of Emergency Physicians. He is the Chairman for the NAEMSP Disaster Preparedness Committee for 2014-16.
He has served with the National Disaster Medical System (NDMS) for 20 years, and is currently a member of the International Medical Surgical Response Team East (IMSURT—E). He previously served as the Commander and Deputy Commander for the North Carolina Disaster Medical Assistance Team (NC-DMAT-1), and as Deputy Commander of the National Medical Response Team East (NMRT East) teams, a division within the NDMS.

Dr. Alson has been a responder on dozens of nationally declared disasters. He is a subject matter expert in the delivery of care in austere and surge type conditions and has lectured nationally and internationally on prehospital trauma care and disaster medicine.

He and his wife Rebecca reside in Winston-Salem.

History of US Light Tanks

This In Action series books gives you a little of the history of US light tanks prior to WW2. The M-2, M-3, M-5 and even the M-24 are shown in this 48 page book. There are also 2 pages of color plates to show the camoflage schemes used.

The b&w photos show the tanks in all sorts of weather & terrain. These light tanks were out gunned and out armored in Europe, but good in the Pacific. Each tank got a little better than the previous one, culminating in the M-24 Chaffee light tank, which was a whole new design. Nice bonus to have it added here. There are also data charts to show the penetration power of the 37mm gun and statistics on each tank's height, weight, armor.

I would not pay the $42.00 asking price for a new book (as of this writing), but picking it up used as I did, or waiting for it to be re-published are options. Great for modelers or those starting out with an interest in armored warfare. These light tanks were good for scouting or secondary theaters, this book shows that very well.

First published in 1983, this lyrical novel, superficially straightforward but full of stories within stories, first brought Bernard MacLaverty's work to public attention. In the novel, a young Irish Republican Army operative who wants to break the cycle of violence seeks out a woman whose Ulster policeman husband he helped to murder. As their relationship grows, so do Cal's guilt and sorrow, until, in the end, he is forced to make a sacrifice of himself in order to gain redemption. Rich in ideas and history, this book helps us understand the situation in Northern Ireland--which "is not just there," MacLaverty has remarked, "as a colorful background."

Simple but elegant.....

I've had this book on my shelves for almost fifteen years, if you can believe it, but never got around to reading it until this week. Now I can't figure out why it took me so long to open it.
"Cal" describes the "troubles" in Northern Ireland in a simple yet elegant manner, with a bare minimum of explicit violence and gore. Most of the violence is implied - the two exceptions being the story of how Marcella Morton became a widow, and what at first glance seems to be a rather pointless episode concerning a land mine and a cow. It seemed pointless, that is, until you read further and discovered exactly how the land mine came to be there.
While the violence is at a minimum, the thoughts, feelings, and philosophies of each side are explored quite thoroughly for such a small book. And while I personally found both points of view quite repellent, I will say that I believed that the characters in this book had these beliefs, and that they were extremely passionate regarding them.
The book is also an interesting psychological study, at least as far as Cal McCluskey (the main character) is concerned. With the help of Marcella, the woman he comes to love, it seems that he is growing up, and coming to realize that there's a lot more out in the world than just Catholics & Protestants fighting and killing each other - but his past will ultimately work against him and nullify all the good that Marcella has done for him - because he was the driver of the car containing the man that killed her husband.
A touching, sad, and very important book.

Unexpectedly haunting.

This book sat on my bookshelf for 10 years before I finally read it--I'd picked it up in a book sale way back and thought it looked interesting. Don't know why I waited so long to read it, but now that I have, I can't shake it. Its story is deceptively simple, but somehow its images haunt the mind long after reading. I guess it's the timelessness of it themes--violence (unfortunately) and love--because though the book was published in 1983 and the story itself, from hints in the book, I think is set about ten years before that, it obviously still resonates with readers in 1999. I wanted the story to go on, to find out if Cal survived his redemption.

A Brutal Tale

Bernard MacLaverty's Cal is perhaps on of the saddest books of the last 20 years. The story of a young Catholic man in Northern Ireland, it slowly but surely tears your heart out.
Cal is an unemployed young man who has very tenuous ties to the IRA. He begins to fall for the widow of one of his group's victims as he tries to break free from the IRA's clutches. All the while he is forced to bear the prejudices of his Protestant neighbors.
MacLaverty skillfully writes the tale. He never fools you about how the story will end but none the less he manages to make the reader invest some emotion in Cal so that when the inevitable comes you are just wiped out.
This is a wonderful piece of modern Irish literature.
