In the following pages I have attempted to trace certain developments in the theory of translation as it has been formulated by English writers. I have confined myself, of necessity, to such opinions as have been put into words, and avoided making use of deductions from practice other than a few obvious and generally accepted conclusions. The procedure involves, of course, the omission of some important elements in the history of the theory of translation, in that it ignores the discrepancies between precept and practice, and the influence which practice has exerted upon theory; on the other hand, however, it confines a subject, otherwise impossibly large, within measurable limits. The chief emphasis has been laid upon the sixteenth century, the period of the most enthusiastic experimentation, when, though it was still possible for the translator to rest in the comfortable medieval conception of his art, the New Learning was offering new problems and new ideals to every man who shared in the intellectual awakening of his time. In the matter of theory, however, the age was one of beginnings, of suggestions, rather than of finished, definitive results; even by the end of the century there were still translators who had not yet appreciated the immense difference between medieval and modern standards of translation. To understand their position, then, it is necessary to consider both the preceding period, with its incidental, half-unconscious comment, and the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, with their systematized, unified contribution.

Development of the Krag Jorgensen Rifle

This is an excellent book covering the development of not only the Krag Jorgensen rifle in US service, but also of its peers and competitors in the US Army's selection process for the rifle and carbine prior to the Spanish-American War. The book also gives good coverage of the development of the 30/40 Krag cartridge (30 US) as well as a review of the development of the smokeless powder that propelled the Krag's projectiles.

This is not a book that delves into the minutia of the design, but one that paints a broad stroke to give a very good overall picture of the Krag Jorgensen. For the intimate details of the design, Joe Poyer's "The American Krag Rifle and Carbine" is more to the point. For those of us that want to know about the politics, the technology of the late 1800s leading to smokeless powder firearms, the various military boards selecting military firearms and the rifle's use in the field, then this is the book for you. The author has a very articulate and readable style of writing that conveys his knowledge in a very readable manner.

This book not only contains a great history of the development of the Krag rifle but it also includes relevant history of cartage development, ballistics and the testing and reasoning of the rifle board responsible for choosing the Krag. It was well written and extremely interesting. I'll be looking for more books from this author.

Relevant and Timeless Wisdom for Men

After reading this book, I believe this is a great tool for men to navigate through their respective relationship with their respective partners. If you truly love the woman in your life, don't you want to learn what she truly needs from you? Many today believe in the myth that men and women are exactly the same. I admit that I bought into the whole women's lib thing back in college, and I still firmly believe in equal rights for all. However, today I personally believe we are genetically wired to think and process things uniquely different because of our genders. These are unique differences that allow two people to either successfully partner for a lifetime, or repel each other. As a woman in today's culture, I have finally come to appreciate the unique and differing strengths of each gender. Wouldn't it be fantastic for our society to finally come to this understanding and embrace these strengths and appreciate the weaknesses of both men and women?

Too many women today bought into the same myth I did in my 20's, and unfortunately so have the men. Most of our men today don't know how to grow as men any more...and it's truly the fault of our culture. Once the fog of this myth lifted, I realized I truly wanted my man to be a real man. Most healthy minded women want that deep down inside, but we don't know how to get this across to the men in our lives when the cultural message tells us otherwise. Strength is not about beating the chest and showing physical strength and being an ass. Strength isn't hiding behind the partner, either. Many men need to finally understand that personal growth and change doesn't stop at high school or college but is an ongoing process of a lifetime. They need to continually pursue personal development and maturity. When they finally pursue this course of action, they will finally start walking along with a loving partner through life instead of with a punching bag or a nag. This type of growth makes a world of difference. My husband made some personal changes after reading this book, and I was amazed at the difference his changes made in me...my ability to communicate with him improved and my internalized anxieties reduced...we're able to enjoy each other instead of all the unspoken hang-ups that lead to unrelated and unhealthy arguments. So if you want to see your partner change for the better, read this book, apply it to your relationship...and be willing to continue growing...for the love of your life, be willing to continue growing.

...I believe its never too late to share wisdom with the children as they grow up...because we shall never underestimate the learning capacity of our children when they are young...and the willingness to learn what might have been missed when they get older...no son is too young to share that kind of wisdom with...no boy too young...no man to old ... to learn... ! I realized as a mom...how much I have missed teaching my boys so much more then I have...and I am grateful to the GOD of ISRAEL...that I get the chance to lead and guide them even as MAN that they have become...in the ways they can lead their life as man they CAN BECOME...timeless wisdom...it is indeed!

Dominant-group members pronounce authoritatively on the needs and welfare of all and then profess to "provide" for those needs. Love, affection, and praise are offered to subordinates on strict condition that they comply with the terms of the unequal relationship. Whether in the home or in the arena of class or race relations, paternalism wraps control and authority in an ideological cocoon in which discriminatory actions are defined as benevolent and affection is made contingent on compliance.

Profound and intriguing...

By decoupling discrimination from hostility, Jackman persuasively demonstrates how paternalism plays a significant role in maintaining inequality in long-term, interdependent relationships between social groups. (She does NOT argue that paternalism plays a role in ALL intergroup relationships and is very clear to delineate the specific types of intergroup dynamics and histories that give rise to paternalistic ideologies as the primary justification/mechanism for maintaining social stratification.) Her work -- although more sociological, than social psychological -- bolsters and supports the modern prejudice research done by other scholars in the areas of race (Gaertner & Dovidio, Katz & Hass, McConahay), gender (Glick & Fiske, Swim, Tougas and colleagues) and sexual orientation (Morrison & Morrison). This work will -- no doubt -- be controversial, especially among those who wish to deny the ongoing presence of inequality in society and who will seek to argue that it is just another political ploy by liberal to further a leftist agenda. However, Jackman methodically supports her argument with empirical research and has carefully outlined the various components of her argument. A must read for any scholar interested in social stratification, gender, race & ethnicity or sexuality.

A Must Read for Students of Social Stratification

In this thoughtful piece, Jackman turns conventional wisdom regarding inequality on its head. The work presents a truly provocative challenge to liberal ideology and traditional understandings of race, class and gender relations. Perhaps paternalistic efforts to reduce inequality serve to perpetuate the status quo rather than increase equality between groups. A must read for students of social stratification and those interested in brining about the reduction of inequality.

Great read! In many group interactions, the subordinate receives affection if they comply with code of behavior the dominant group wants them to follow. This can be applied to race, class and gender and the the book does a good job at investigated each one of these socially constructed elements of our society.

About the Author

Sharon Oviatt is well known for her extensive work in educational interfaces, human-centered interface design, multimodal and mobile interfaces, and communications interfaces. She has been recipient of a National Science Foundation Special Creativity Award for pioneering work on mobile multimodal interfaces, and first place recipient of the Ina Coolbrith Award. She has published over 130 scientific articles in a wide range of venues in the computational, learning, and cognitive sciences. She is an Associate Editor of the main journals and edited book collections in the field of human interfaces, including The Human-Computer Interaction Handbook. She was a founder of the International Conference on Multimodal Interfaces (ICMI), which became an annual ACM-sponsored international conference series under her guidance. In 2007, she founded Incaa Designs (http://www.incaadesigns.org/), a Seattle-area nonprofit that researches, designs, and evaluates the impact of innovative new educational interfaces.

Must read for all interested in user-centered interface design

Computers have only been around for a few decades. We spend so much time on various computer devices, yet we don't spend nearly as much time analyzing how these devices affect our brain on a short- and long-term basis. Many schools are willing to add entire computer labs without thinking about the impact of these technologies in educational settings. I was happy to find that this book addresses these questions. The Design of Future Educational Interfaces presents a number of studies that describe how the affordances of various computer interfaces can impact how students learn. Get this book, it is a must read!!!!

I was able to read this book while it was still in its final draft form during an undergrad class. It is one of the most informative books I have read in this field and in fact, I continued to reference it throughout my graduate courses. The book is straight forward and explains concepts with many examples. I would suggest it for anyone who is interested in learning about this exciting field or creating their own educational interface. The book would also be good for educators who want to understand how to leverage different interfaces in their classrooms.
