About the Author

James McLeskey is professor and chair of the Department of Special Education at the University of Florida. He completed his doctoral work at Georgia State University. Dr. McLeskey is the author or co-author of Inclusion: Effective Practices for All Students (with Michael Rosenberg and David Westling, to be published by Pearson 2010); Reflections on Inclusion: Classic Articles that Shaped our Thinking (published by CEC, 2007); and Inclusive Education in Action: Making Differences Ordinary (with Nancy L. Waldron, published by ASCD, 2000). He has worked extensively with local schools as they have developed inclusive schools, and has written numerous articles regarding this work.

 

Michael S. Rosenberg is a Professor in the Department of Special Education and Chair of Doctoral Studies at Johns Hopkins University. He completed his doctoral work at Penn State University. A co-editor of Teacher Education and Special Education, Dr. Rosenberg is the co-author of Educating Students with Behavior Disorders (with R. Wilson, L. Maheady, & P.T. Sindelar, published by Allyn & Bacon, 2003); Student Teacher To Master Teacher (With L. J. Don't get ripped off!

The US Army Field Manual FM-3-25.26 is a US gov't document. That means it was created using tax dollars paid by US citizens. That means that this document is provided FREE--because it was already paid for and it is property of the US gov't.

I just did an Internet search for the "US Army field manual of land nav" and was provide with this book (FM-3-25.26) in PDF format FREE. So if you have a printer, you shouldn't need to pay anyone for this book! This book was already bought for you with US tax dollars!

THE REAL ARMY FIELD MANUAL

Just like the one from the Army. Great manual to teach anyone land navigation with a map and compass. Get the protractor and a Silva compass that has the ability to set declination, and you can be out in the woods in less than a day (if you apply yourself). Start out with easy to find terrain features, natural or man made, i.e. a tower, etc. Great book to teach Scouts, etc. Spent 22 years in the Army, and this is the foundation to learn and navigate in any terrain. Another good investment would be the Ranger pace count beads, look for my review on them.

Free Army FM in print - you are paying for the print

Yes, it is simply the Army FM that you can download in PDF format for FREE and then print or read on a tablet/phone. I give it 5 stars because I like to have things in print. To download and print this would cost nearly the same amount. If you would then like to have your giant stack of paper too thick to staple together bound in some sort of book then it will end up costing more than this did.

Take Blogging to a Whole New Level

I've been blogging for at least a decade or more and I still found exceptionally helpful nuggets of information inside How to Write 37 Different Types of Blog Posts. If you want to know how to avoid blogging mistakes, or how to plan your blog’s content, I recommend reading Sarah Arrow’s book. This was already the third or fourth book I have read by this author. After reading each one of her books I always told myself… Sarah Arrow is a “blogging Encyclopedia”.
Reading the book and seeing such a well-organized list with all 37 types of posts, I suddenly felt that I will never have another “writer’s block” moment. My mind can temporary be “blocked” by one, two, or three subjects but… for sure not all 37 types.
To conclude, I recommend this book to anyone who is serious about blogging, no matter if you have been blogging for a long or short time. A special recommendation is addressed directly to all beginner bloggers. I know how it is to start in this field; I know how hard it is to track the good information down on all aspects you will encounter. Please read as you will have the best understanding of what will get out of this book. 3rd S- Shhhh
You have to do it as LOUD AS YOUR BABIES CRY and close to their ear. It stimulates the sound of the womb. It can be replaced by white noise.

4th S- Sway
Support your babies head and neck and wiggle their HEAD with fast, tiny movements (like you are shivering). Once they are entranced, you can move to a slower swinging motion.

5th S- Sucking
This works best after the other S's have calmed. A finger or pacifier work and can be eliminated after the 3rd month.

In a 1986 study by Tiffany Field, massaged babies gained 47% more then babes who did not have the same touch. The same babies had higher IQ's a year later.

1. Prepare for pleasure. Warm the room, dim the lights, play soft music.

2. Bring Yourself to the moment. Sit comfortably, take 5 slow deep breaths and allow yourself to be present for the experience. Its an exchange of love in one fleeting, tender moment of time.

3. Speak to your baby with your hands. Always try to keep one hand in contact with the skin and talk to them about what you are doing and what your hopes are for their life, or sing a lullaby. Let your massage strokes move in synchronicity with your calm breathing.

4. Reward your babies tummy. Bicycle their legs then firmly push both knees to their belly and hld them there for 20 seconds. Massage the tummy in firm, clockwise, circular strokes - starting at their right lower belly, up and across the top of their tummy and ending at their left lower side (this traces their colon and intestines)

5. Follow you baby's signals.

Skip the book, watch a video

First off, I completely believe that the techniques in here are going to be a lifesaver. Every nurse, pediatrician, or midwife I've talked to has recommended these techniques. However, putting them into a book is really stretching the material, and involves a LOT of repetition of the same stories and arguments over and over. This could be condensed into a pamphlet. In fact, I just finished watching Dr. Karp explain the entire book in a six-minute spot on a daytime TV show (found for free on the Internet).

As an expectant parent who wants to be well informed, I have a lot of books on my reading list. This took up way more time than it should have. If you're a new/expecting parent, do yourself a favor and find this info for free on the Internet. If you want to buy this as a gift, do the expectant parents a favor and get the DVD or instant video instead.

Some good techniques, though I am skeptical of the effectiveness claims. Try watching some videos on it first.

The book has a very good perspective on how to approach the issue of a crying baby, and you may find that their five techniques will help soothe your baby. However, when trying to implement the methods in this book, I have found that like everything else with babies, "Your Mileage May Vary."

The general advice is great- the author's argument for simulating a "fourth trimester" is very convincing. We also found some of the 5 techniques to be helpful. If you are desperate for techniques to soothe your baby, the book is a good starting point.

So why give it 3 stars, instead of 5? In order for you to achieve these magic results, the author claims, you must find the EXACT combination of the 5 techniques to use for your baby. This is a very sly argument to make, because it puts the blame squarely on the reader if the techniques don't work. If the techniques don't seem to work for you, then "you must be doing it wrong." I have seen this argument advanced by other self-help books, and it is a very convenient way for the author to explain away any naysayers.

This book also suffers from "could-have-been-a-pamphlet" syndrome. You could honestly get the same information from a few youtube videos. If all you care about are the techniques themselves, then a lot of the material in the book is redundant.

Just the song sheet music - NOT THE LIBRETTO!

I google "SHE LOVES ME" and "libretto" and this AMAZON link came up. Thought I was getting a copy of the libretto for $5 not just ONE SONG! Very disappointed!
