Good Supplement - Possible Recommendation

I teach AP CSA and have looked at all of the most current AP prep books in hopes to finding a quality one for all of my students to use and recommend to buy. I just received my book today and spent the past hour scanning it. First, when I received the package and opened the book, the first 15 pages had their corner folded, which is not acceptable when shipping a brand new book. The topics are laid out well with thorough explanations of concepts, but not necessarily all of the detail required. Each topic has basic and advanced questions. Advanced are definitely worthy of AP-like questions and the basics; some are, some aren't, but the basics can be a great way of leading in to the advanced. The practice exams at the back look great as well and I appreciate the free response practice items throughout - this is an area this book thrives over others.

In short - if I am going to recommend a book for students...
Explanations - Barron's 7th edition - sometimes a little more confusing, but has more detail or 5 Steps to a 5 - easier to read, but you will miss some key minor details.
Multiple Choice - Barron's - there are more, harder, and detailed explanations for each section.
Free Response - 5 Steps to a 5 - they have a lot of early ones to ease students into it and explain very nicely results for an "open-ended" type answer.

Overall, I would rate this book a 4 out of 5. I would love more than a handful of multiple choice questions per topic. I also do not appreciate having pages bent before I even open it.

This is my real response, not influenced by anyone but myself and I bought this book with my own money. :-)

An excellent resource

The authors really have tried to include everything that could help a modern student prepare for the AP exam for Computer Science A. My teen will be studying independently for the exam after taking a year long course and the tools included in the book are extremely helpful.

First of all, the book recommend that you use McGraw Hill's test planning app to customize your study schedule. The app gives you a day by day schedule and also extra practice questions.

To figure out where you stand, you take a diagnostic exam that is half the length of the actual exam. This allows the student to figure out areas of weakness which they can focus on in their preparation for exam day.

Another thing my teen likes about the book is that there are two levels of questions for each subject area - basic and advanced. Books that are filled with only advanced questions can be intimidating and this book does manage to make the topics seem quite accessible.

Beyond that the book has all the standard topics - structure of the exam, each topic explained, test taking strategies, explanations for multiple choice as well as free response problems, Java code Solutions, 3 practice tests and errors to avoid.

All in all, this a well planned an thorough guide written with today's student in mind.

Lots of great information

First, let me say that this is for my son, as he is the one taking the AP course and I thought this book will be helpful. We've only had it a week but so far he is enjoying it... or 'enjoying' it as much as a kid enjoys during doing work during summer break! Since he won't be taking the actual exam for quite a while, I can't yet say if it helps his scores on the AP but I do believe that if he does all the book has in it, he'll definitely fare much better than without it!
It has 3 practice exams as well as a free app to customize his study schedule. This is incredibly useful, as my son easily gets off track so every little organizational idea or app truly helps!
Inside the book it is broken into many 'steps'. Step 1 is to set up the study program as well as what you need to know, and frequently asked questions about the exam. Step 2 is to determine your test readiness and encourages doing the diagnostic exam. Step 3 is all about strategies for success and step 4 is to review the knowledge you need to score high, going into various concepts as what is java, software developer, OOP, Choosing your IDE, and others. Here the book really dives into the information and covers many concepts and breaks down the chapters in the framework of these concepts. Finally, step 5 is titled Building your Test-Taking Confidence.

Also incredibly handy and useful is the appendix. It is filled with goodies, such as a quick reference guide and list of keywords in Java as well as other aspects in addition to an area that lists other online resources.

Both my son and I are excited to utilize this book and I do hope it is truly helpful for him! It looks like a good, well-organized book that will help keep him on track and aid in a successful year and exam!

Chapter One

HOOK

What’s a screenplay? Good question. After all, if you’re going to write one, you ought to know the answer. Right?

You probably already know an answer. A screenplay is writing intended to be turned into film. It’s a hundred-odd pages held together by brass brads, in which you have written down whatever you want the audience to see and hear in your movie.

If it gets made, the director will come up with a whole new vision, the actors will change your dialogue, the editor will concoct another way to order the scenes, and it won’t be "your movie" any more. That’s okay. A screenplay is not a complete work. It is not intended to be appreciated on its own. If a movie were a building, a screenplay would be the blueprint. Nobody settles down in front of a roaring fire with her beloved, a bottle of Chianti, and a nice blueprint. Nobody takes a couple of good screenplays out to the beach — outside of show business, anyway.

That means there is no point writing a screenplay if it isn’t going to get produced.

We all know that, somewhere in the back of our minds, but most of the thousands of screenplays I’ve read in ten years as a development executive were never in any danger of being made into a movie. From the moment the writer conceived them, they were doomed. They may have been well-crafted or poorly crafted, but they were all missing what they needed in order to get made.

This book is about writing movies that get made. Not just popular movies. Art films get made, too. Writing a screenplay that will make a brilliant movie is a good part of writing a movie that will get made, and that’s what most of this book is about. But that’s not all of it. So it’s important to understand what else a screenplay is, if you’re going to go to all the trouble of writing one, because if you don’t, the odds are you’re wasting your time.

The Business of the Craft

It's show business, folks. And in Alex Epstein's book, "Crafty Screenwriting" the emphasis is on the word "business". As someone who has been a development executive, Epstein reminds writers of the bigger picture: a screenplay is just one element in a deal. The screenplay doesn't get made until other elements come together in a package that includes a producer, a director and the star and serious money. He urges the aspiring screenwriter to write his story with the goal of making it an effective selling tool, a catalyst to getting a deal done. Otherwise the chances of the script actually seeing the projector light in the darkness of a movie theater are slim to none.

And how to make the script an effective sales tool? First, says Epstein, it needs a great hook. A hook is the concept of the story in a nutshell that grabs attention and makes people want to know how it turns out. The marketing people come up with hooks called taglines to grab your attention when a movie is released. You need to come up with a hook to grab the attention of a Hollywood player to get the movie made.

Quite bluntly, Epstein says, "If your story does not have a hook, you are probably wasting your time writing the screenplay."

So, how to come up with a hook? Epstein offers some suggestions, but like everything else in the creative process, there is no sure-fire formula. After the hook he discusses the title - "Your title is the most important phrase in your entire script", the pitch, the query letter. At the end of the book is a chapter on getting an agent, getting copyright protetion for your work plus two appendices, one a sample option deal, the other a sample of screenplay pages properly formatted.

The bulk of the book is devoted to discussing the nuts and bolts of writing: plot, characters, action, dialogue, etc. Along the way he tilts at a few windmills: one section is titled "The Myth of the Three-Act Structure."

Does Epstein have any new gems of insight about them that haven't been revealed in a dozen other books? Not really, but if I had to recommend books on the particular topics of character, action and dialogue, this book would make my short list. Because he discusses the tried and true clearly and succintly with occasional twists of thought and turns of phrase that cast the tried and true in a new light in this reader's mind. And throughout his discussion, he never loses sight of the goal: punching up the script to make it a more marketable property. As the subtitle of the book says: "Writing Movies That Get Made" -- not just written.

If you're interested in writing scripts as vessels in which to pour your heart, your soul, your unappreciated genius, the ultimate truth of being that only you comprehend -- this book isn't for you. But if you subscribe to the notion that screenwriting is a business as well as a craft, then this is a book you will profit from.

Simply put - I'm glad I bought this book.

I'm completely new to the "craft" of screenwriting, and I think there's nothing wrong with a book that starts at square one for people like me. I think the book is well-written, and it seems to have been carefully proofread and edited (you'd be surprised by the mistakes I've found in other books). I like how Epstein talks about both the business side of writing and selling screenplays as well as the actual skills and strategies you need to write them. I need to know about both. He makes his points clearly and concisely - he doesn't use five pages to say something that can be said on one page. Makes for a quicker read, without sacrificing information.

Specifically, Epstein covers these topics:

1. Coming up with a "Hook," an exciting idea that can grab the attention of both show business people and audiences.

2. Working out your Plot.

3. Developing your Characters.

4. Writing Action into your scenes.

5. Crafting appropriate screenplay Dialogue.

6. Understanding different movie Genres.

7. Getting writing Help as you learn to improve your scripts.

8. Rewriting and rewriting until you get a great script.

9. Getting your script made into a movie by working with agents, development execs, producers, and the general business of Hollywood.

I read a criticism on one of the previous reviews that pretty much disparages Epstein for only having one writing credit in movies. I don't know what that person's copy of Crafty Screenwriting says, but the cover of my copy reads, "A development executive's real-world approach..." In other words, Epstein never claims you should listen to him because he's a super-accomplished writer with many credits. But he is a development executive. And it's very important to know how development executives think and what they want to see in screenplays. So I think his opinion is valuable.

When I first decided to pursue screenwriting, I thought I had the right idea of how I should proceed and how show business worked. Turns out I was wrong on both counts! If you're just starting out, and you want to know the basics of the business of movie development and the foundations of screenwriting theory, I absolutely recommend this book. But get some highlighters! There's a lot to learn!

Wish I'd had this book in film school

Finally, a book about screenwriting that isn't drudgery to read. When I was a film student, the screenwriting books I was assigned made the whole process seem more arcane than French grammar. Epstein's book is about how to tell stories that people will want to see on the screen, and reading it is like talking to a very smart, funny person.
He's absolutely right about how scripts need to have a hook to get made, and he explains for the uninitiated how those occasional movies without hooks actually got made (by being a bestselling novels first, being the pet project of a movie star, etc.)
Buy this book. It's a fun read, and it will help you figure out what's wrong with your screenplay (and will save you endless hours of frustration if your hook-less story is doomed to be unproducable).

Exceptionally Written Advanced Presentation

A well-written text concentrating on material beyond separation of variables or fourier techniques.
Prerequisites are modest (i.e., elementary solution methods for PDE's, ODE's and Complex Variables--say, Weinberger.).
The author touches upon: geometrical optics, Hamilton-Jacobi theory, Lorentz Transformations of Special Relativity.
Excellent chapters expound Integral Equations, Eigenvalue problems, Hyperbolic Equations, Fluid Dynamics,
and PDE's in the complex domain. Verbose and explanatory herein replace terse and succinct.
Nonlinear PDE's of Fluid Dynamics, as the author writes "..serves as an important
guide in the investigation of partial differential equations."
Paraphrasing from the preface: " ...Central theme is existence and uniqueness theorems,
written for engineers and physicists, as well as for mathematicians."
Many of the problems at Chapter's End are physical in nature (straightforward) serving to augment the theoretical exposition.
For many a reason, the problems are stimulating without seeming burdensome. "Discuss equations for the spherically
symmetric motion of a gas,that is, for radial flow depending only on time and the distance from the origin" (Page 518).
The exposition is very clear, a fine text and reference.

Nice overview of theory and applications

The first chapter of this long used text presents a proof of the Cauchy-Kowalewski Theorem. This essentially establishes the existence of an analytical solution by assuming a multivariable Taylor expansion solution, plugging it in the partial differential equation and then finding conditions on the coefficients which ensure convergence (majorants)-pretty much an application of the comparison test similar to that seen in the Weirstrass M-test. Almost trivial but most books relegate it to a reference.
Engineers and physicists would find his frequent use of the method of characteristics valuable. The method is dependent on the bilinear form which classifies the equation and thence also determines a natural geometry. Singular curves are determined usually by constructing a determinant wherein the partial derivatives are treated as the variables like x,y,z and their coefficicients are the elements in the determinant. Some of these coefficients will be the infinitesimals-dx, dy, etc.- from their parameter (usually time) derivatives in the system of partial differential equations. You equate the determinant to zero and using Cramer's rule you get systems of ordinary differential equations. An easy example is streamlines-infinitesimal vector must be parallel to the flow field vector at an arbitrary given point-vector cross or determinant is zero, giving the differential equations of the streamlines. Actual solutions are found using compatibility equations which are usually also singular but ensure physical constraints. As you might infer, the author freely uses physical examples throughout the text. This may appear cluttered to the purist or as one reviewer claimed "beating around the bush" but these ideas arose from these examples.

Needs more!(for a book of its level)

I bought this for a class that changed the book on the first day. What I found is that Pierre Germain's notes online are far more succint and lucid, and do not beat around the bush. Important and elementary theorems such as Sobolev Embedding theorem, Rellich Kondrakov compactness, Morrey's inequality, any techniques for establishing well posedness(local or global), lax milgram, direct method of calculus of variations(for anything other than dirichlet's principle), mountain pass lemma, etc are simply not presented. Baisically this book is okay if you want to learn a bit about connections with complex variables and on integral equations.

This book attempts to present Hamilton Jacobi Bellman equations and its a shame that he does not go into the theory of viscosity solutions. Even for the simplest optimization problems, such as a minimum time problem, you will run into trouble if you only want to consider classical solutions.

Book is very difficult to read. Apparently it was ...

Book is very difficult to read. Apparently it was scanned or something and explanations that had been under pictures (pictures which are mostly not there) are mixed up in the text so you have to figure out where your sentence continues. The book is from 1898 and the style of writing if, of course, of that period. The author was a professor at Brown University and I get the idea that academic competition for status was as alive and well then as it is today. He was very thorough and if you can get the sentences together correctly you'll probably get a lot more information you ever dreamed of.

About the Author
James Bastien was born in Bellingham, Washington, on April 10, 1934. His father, Clarence, was musical and played the violin. His mother, Dorothy, was a writer and a high school Latin and journalism instructor. After living in Seattle and Florida, the family moved to Portland, Oregon, where Jim began his piano studies with Frances Mulkey North. Subsequently, Jim studied with the late Ariel Rubstein, the late Louis Artau, and the late Gyorgy Sandor.

Jim received his undergraduate and masters degrees from Southern Methodist University. He was a former member of the faculties of Notre Dame University, Tulane University, Loyola University (New Orleans), and the summer faculties of Tanglewood and the National Music Camp at Interlochen, Michigan.

Jim met his wife Jane Smisor in New Orleans in 1960. They performed as the duo-piano team, Smisor and Bastien. In addition, Jim was a Columbia Artist accompanist whose collaborative career included appearances with Richard Tucker and John Alexander. During this time Jim and Jane started writing music to address the needs of their students. This was the beginning of the Bastien piano books that have inspired so many piano students and teachers.

The Bastien piano books have been published worldwide by the Neil A. Kjos Music Company since 1963 and are now translated into 14 languages. In 1999, The Music Teachers National Association presented Jim and Jane with the Lifetime Achievement Award, the association's highest honor, in recognition of their outstanding career in music and contribution to the music profession.

James W. Bastien, loving husband and father, and a passionate piano pedagogue and musician, passed away on December 7, 2005, in La Jolla, California. During his long career, Jim became internationally known through his contributions to piano teaching, composing, writing, adjudication, and performing. With more than 300 publications to his credit, the Bastien name has become synonymous with innovative piano pedagogy.

Excellent book depicting reincarnation.

Excellent book. Dr. Weiss has presented different people's situations including their regressions where they discuss their past lives and progressions discussing options of their future lives. Anyone who believes in re-incarnation will enjoy this book. I gave a five star rating as I believe in re-incarnation and that we need to have love for all living beings which is what Dr. Weiss mentions throughout this book.

Same Soul, Many Bodies

This is a fairly recent book by Dr. Weiss, again centered on the experience his patients had during past life regressions. This time though he actually elaborates on the healing power of progression, i.e. having his patients explore possible future lives or life events.

He admits that whatever glimpses of the future you may see, it is only one possible future that could be altered by any number of events in between. Dr. Weiss stresses the therapeutical effect of progressions under hypnosis, letting his patients explore different life outcomes based on the different decisions they could be making at their current life forks.

There are a few remarkable stories contained in this book, more so than in his other ones (I read most of them). Recalls into the distant past of life on Earth, Atlantis, one episode from the life of Jesus, as well as glimpses into the future 1000 and more years out. Even mentions of life on other planets. Dr. Newton (in whose work you may be interested too if you are into reincarnation and life between lives) refers to extraterrestrial life forms quite a bit, but this is the first time I saw Dr. Weiss write about the topic.

I first had the CD version of this book, but found out later that the book has quite a bit more content. I did not regret buying the book eventually.

He got it in one with this one. There is so much information in this one - pick a topic and he touches on it. And yet he wrote it in a manner like "Many Lives, Many Masters" as opposed to the almost textbook way he wrote "Through Time Into Healing" or others. It was too easy to read, even. I'm going to have to read it again.

You do not have to believe in reincarnation to get the messages out of this book. The book deals with love, compassion and empathy as core elements and I really think that those are universal messages everyone in the world can believe in.

I think this is the best book Weiss has written to date.
