About the Author
Nancy Tye-Murray is a professor in the Department of Otolaryngology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, and an Adjunct Professor at New Zealand's University of Canterbury. A founder of the University of Iowa Cochlear Implant Aural Rehabilitation Programs, she also served as Director of Research for Central Institute for the Deaf. In addition to developing several communication strategies training programs, auditory training programs, and speechreading tests, Dr. Tye-Murray is the principle investigator of three National Institutes of Health RO1 grants. Her research focuses on the effects of aging on audiovisual speech recognition, discourse comprehension, and auditory training, as well as audiovisual speech processing by children who have normal and impaired hearing. The author of six books and more than 100 peer-reviewed research papers, Dr. Tye-Murray is also a popular speaker both nationally and internationally.

Even better than the first

Tye-Murray has bettered her first effort with this second edition of "Foundations of Aural Rehabilitation: Children, Adults, and Their Family Members." I used the first edition for my introduction to AR class for years, and find this one even more useful. The prose is interesting and clear, the graphics are very useful for teaching purposes. This is a text that I tell my students to hang on to and not re-sale to the bookstore. Once they graduate, they will return to it over and over again.

Sea captain's account of piracy and the African slave trade.

Captain William Snelgrave's "New Account" is the eye-witness narrative of an early eighteenth century British sea captain who spent much of his career as a slave trader between Africa's Guinea coast and the West Indies. The book provides a fascinating inside view of the African side of the slave trade. Snelgrave was the first European visitor of the crafty and powerful King of Dahomey who was waging a war of conquest against his African neighbors. Snelgrave paints a graphic portrait of the villages he visits, the societies of the various kingdoms (the cultures were quite different), the rituals including widespread human sacrifice, and of course the very competative and mercantile-based slave trade. Most of the slaves of this region were the captives of the interminable wars and intrigues between the kingdoms. Malefactors of a given tribe were also enslaved, but were usually kept for a kind of indentured servitude at home rather than being sold to the white slave traders. Snelgrave set down many amazing first-hand vignettes, including the time, while the guest of a chieftain, he witnessed a mass human sacrifice. When the villagers started to sacrifice a infant boy, Snelgrave could stand it no more, and asked the chieftain to desist. At grave risk to himself and his men, Snelgrave took up arms and stated clearly that he would not allow this sacrifice to take place. The chief reluctantly sold the boy to Snelgrave. When he brought the child aboard his ship, he was witness to a touching reunion between the boy and one of the female slaves aboard his ship, who turned out to be the boy's mother. Later, at Barbadoes, Snelgrave purchased the boy and his mother out of his personal funds and granted them their freedom. The biographical information about the subtle King of Dahomey and his conquests and strategies make for very interesting reading. For all of his fierceness and policy, this redoubtable king wilted in the face of the periodic attacks of the people of the Loes from beyond the great eastern lake. The Loes warriors came mounted on horses, and the Dahomeys did not know how to contend with them. The interior of Africa was very mysterious to Snelgrave and his associates. The Europeans were not allowed to penetrate more than 50 miles into the interior, and only rumors and legends reached them about these mysterious lands. The last third of the book contains the spellbinding account of Snelgrave's capture by pirates. His ship was taken by the pirate Cocklyn off the coast of Africa. The account of his captivity among the bloodthirsty, foulmouthed crew is harrowing. The drunken quartermaster had a grudge against Snelgrave for trying to rally his crew to fight off the pirates during the capture, and made at least three attempts to murder Snelgrave, most of which were foiled by his own inebrity or the chance intercession of other pirates who were better disposed toward Snelgrave. Another of the pirate captains, Davis, sailed away from Cocklyn's ship, with Davis later being killed by the Portugese while visiting one of their African colonies. The man who took over Davis' ship was none other than the infamous Bartholomew Roberts, one of history's more renowned pirates. This book is captivating, not only telling a compelling true action story, but revealing history from the perspective of one who witnessed it first hand.

The 10 essays on poetry collected here, adapted from lectures delivered at Oxford between 1989 and 1994, display much of the intellectual restlessness, linguistic wizardry and political conscience that have shaped Heaney's own poetry. His thesis is that poetry of the highest order must redress social imbalances, at once transfiguring the circumstances it observes and offering an unforeseen, more humane, aesthetic alternative. This is an abstract and rigorous idea, yet nonacademic readers will find much to savor as Heaney tests and refines his paradigm in light of a largely canonical selection of poets (most are from the British Isles). In 1989 Heaney?who recently won the 1995 Nobel Prize for Literature?was elected professor of poetry at Oxford University; the lectures he gave there are collected in this book. By "redress" Heaney means the preferred definition of compensation for a wrong, but he also intends the obsolete meaning of bringing hunting dogs back to the chase, since poetry is a game of "fundamentally self-delighting inventiveness," one in which a force "unhindered, yet directed, can sweep ahead into its full potential." Eminently readable, the various essays here are united by a personal yet profound tone. They explore a broad range of poets, from Christopher Marlowe and John Clare to W.B. Yeats and Elizabeth Bishop, but Heaney's focus is on poetry's ability to redress "all of life's inadequacies, desolations, and atrocities," not by means of direct political response but simply by being its own intrinsic reward. Strong Enough To Help

The Redress of Poetry is a series of lectures given by Seamus Heaney at Oxford; in all of them, he examines poetry and how it can be strong enough to help the reader, to act as an equal force to the life lived by the reader. He looks at all kinds of poets - Dylan Thomas, Christopher Marlowe, Yeats, Wilde and Bishop - and of course talks about his own position as a Catholic from the Northern Ireland living in Dublin. In all the lectures Heaney is wonderfully informal and funny, while still solidly getting across how important and vital these writers are. The lecture on Thomas alone is a great lesson on writing and authenticity, and the last one, "Frontiers of Writing", makes a strong case that a nation is imagined by writers first - that language, poetry, opens up possibilities in nations as well as in people. Though he knows that words can't do everything, Heaney's affection for writing and writers is convincing. At his best, he made me want to go back to the poet and read more, and not many people can make me do that!

Not even his franchise player, Arnold Schwarzenegger, got special treatment during the filming of True Lies. High on a crane and ready to film a scene, he reports: "I had to go to the bathroom read bad. Jim screams up to me, 'No you can't! You're a military man on a mission, would a real pilot land just to go to the bathroom?'"

EGO MANIAC ON THE LOOSE

I REALLY ENJOYED THIS BOOK ABOUT ONE OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL DIRECTORS OF LAST 2 DECADES. JAMES CAMERSON IS AN EGO MANIAC, PERFECTIONIST, WORKAHOLIC,SLAVE DRIVER. HE IS SELF CENTERED AND AROGANT. HE HAS HAD 4 MARRIAGES AND FAILED IN EACH. HE ALSO IS A TALENTED, SELF MOTIVATED, INTELLIGENT, AND CREATIVE PERSON. HE SEEMS TO STRIVE ON STRESS, PRESSURE, AND CHAOS. THIS BOOK CONTAINS MANY INTERESTING AND AMUSING TALES OF HIS DARK SIDE (MIJ). THE TELLING OF HIM GOING DOWN IN A MINI SUB TO DO SOME FILMING OF THE WRECKAGE OF THE TITANIC HIMSELF IS IN ITSELF A GREAT STORY. THIS IS A MUST FOR ANYONE WHO LIKES TO READ ABOUT BEHIND THE SCENES ABOUT MOVIE MAKING AND LIKES TO READ ABOUT GOSSIP CONCERNING SO CALLED HOLLYWOOD STARS. THE AUTHOR HAS A REALLY GOOD READ HERE.

If you like this director, overall, well worth a read

I picked up this book over the week-end, and finished it in a day. Being "unauthorized" it is actually a very well put together piece of work. The author has obviously used alot of reference material (he quotes Starlog alot) but reinforces this material with his own cast and crew interviews.
Unfortunately the sections on the films that preceed "The Abyss" are relatively light reads. The section on "Aliens" does however bring in some very interesting details about the production that I have never seen in print before...it does not however go quite far enough, I put it down wanting to know more.
Overall 3 out of 5...this book could have done more with the earlier period of this directors career.

A very interesting book to read.

Over my life the "unauthorized" biographies are usually books with sorted details of sex, drugs and other scandals. Those books are usually a real turnoff for me. However, Marc Shapiro has written a book that I found both fascinating and enlightening at the same time.
What Shapiro gives you is an inside look at the Filmmaker who is responsible for films like Titanic, The Terminator, True Lies and Terminator 2. Read and learn how Cameron got his start working for another film genius, Roger Corman.
While this book leaves you to ponder the question of whether or not Cameron was the power hungry, controlling and manipulating filmmaker some have claimed or is Cameron just another Hollywood Movie flake or possibly the film industry's greatest genius.
The quick and interesting read makes this book a real pleasure. If you like to read about how the movie industry moves and shakes than this book is one you'll want to add to your collection. Overall an excellent job and well worth the time to read!

In this evocative collection of autobiographical vignettes, Almond's writing exudes the same haunting mood that characterizes his novels (Skellig; Kit's Wilderness; Heaven Eyes). Rather than moving linearly, stories, set in the author's predominantly Catholic neighborhood, provide a spinning carousel of surreal images connecting different eras and piecing together fragments of memories. Town outcasts seem to change form as Almond reveals their poignant histories. Family members who die untimely deaths make surprising reappearances ("The week after our sister Barbara died she was seen walking hand in hand with Mam on this road toward the field... [They] walked with a fluency which neither had in their lives, for Barbara had been an invalid child and Mam was already badly damaged by arthritis"). Mam re-emerges in one tale as a vibrant young dancer when her son gazes at an old photograph taken during her girlhood. In another, three deceased family members each define the word "death." Grade 5-9-Eighteen nostalgic vignettes form the patchwork of this memory quilt, Almond's wistful recollection of the people and places he knew during his childhood in a poor mining town in the north of England nearly 50 years ago. Like memory itself, the stories weave in and out of time and place, and while they appear disjointed at first, they quickly and subtly reveal patterns and themes that mold the boy into a man: the abiding love of parents and siblings, even beyond their deaths; first cigarette, first fight, first love; and the ubiquitous, disapproving eye of the Catholic Church and the teenage temptation to spit in it. Lilting dialect and homespun humor imbue Almond's narrative with a beauty and simplicity that transcend the poverty and squalor of the diverse settings, which range from graveyards to fun fairs, schoolrooms to empty lots. The chronological and cultural gap that separates Almond's youth from that of modern children is so palpable in these stories that many readers will feel overwhelmed and perhaps even discouraged. Tenacious ones, however, will be rewarded with a captivating portrait of Almond the child, whose life experiences helped produce Almond the writer and his eloquent body of literature.

Autobiographical Short Stories

I love David Almond's writing, and this book is no exception. This is an autobiographical account, detailing the author's childhood in Felling. The writing is, as usual, both accessible and profound - and there are hidden depths here.

One thing that was odd about this book was the way it revealed all the sources of inspiration used in the other David Almond books I have read. There were hints of Skellig with the talk if angels and shoulder blades being vestigial wings. I could see inspiration for the fire eaters in the story about passing the eleven plus, and in one of the character names. The choirboys in Clay find their inspiration in the author's catholic upbringing. And so it goes on.

This is perhaps not a surprise. Most authors - maybe all the good ones - use real life experiences and locations as inspiration for their works. The only odd thing was that as I read this story, I was so clearly put in mind of all the others.

Well-written and poignant.

Almond's books are filled with metaphysical darkness and mystery. If anyone has ever wondered where his ideas come from, COUNTING STARS provides clues as it is a collection of short stories based on his boyhood growing up Catholic in northern England.

One in a large family of siblings, Almond experienced several debilitating blows early in life. The loss of a sister haunts the book, along with the untimely death of his father. These events lend a melancholy tone to COUNTING STARS. "Stars" shines

You've read his stories about bird-men in the garage, ghosts of prehistoric humans, and strange girls with webbed fingers. Now read a unique, wistful book -- half autobiography, half fictional short stories -- that goes back to David Almond's childhood in a small English mining town.
Almond goes back to Stoneygates and looks at things through the eyes of a child -- the world is a magical, mystical place, where sadness and joy lurk around every corner. He writes of a lonely old woman who keeps her dead baby in a jar, and what happens to the lost baby after her death. He writes of a tender first love with a girl at the church. He writes of a retarded woman who claims to have been visited by the Virgin Mary, of the deaths of his parents and sister, a homeless man whose voice was stolen by a fanatical headmistress, of a crisis of faith, of a tormenting bully, of a trip into a fairground "Time Machine," a kindly but strict priest who claims that to count more than a hundred stars is blasphemy, and of angels who show him what he most longs to see.
It's impossible to tell how much of this is true, and how much is imagined. But the elements woven into the story are disarmingly real. Death, life, God, faith, suffering and love are presented in a uniquely surreal manner. His descriptions are starkly evocative; he may describe an angel merely as looking like a woman, but more perfect, and the reader will understand perfectly well what he is saying. Even though it's clear he often does not agree with some of the people in this (the strict priest, for example) Almond never treats them with scorn or mockery unless they are genuinely cruel.
It's a beautiful glimpse of what went into the creation of such modern classics as "Skellig," "Kit's Wilderness" and "Heaven Eyes." A treasure.

Since 2010, he has worked on everything from mobile platforms to web development, and he has even worked with experimental devices. His past clients include Carmichael Lynch, Coleco, and Subaru. His most recent project is Battle Box 3D, a virtual tabletop. Currently, he teaches game development at the Minneapolis Media Institute in Minnesota.

Helped me to get started with game developing on Android Platforms. It is like a tutorial to develop a simple game with Unity keeping Android in mind. Unfortunately I got lost sometimes and needed to use the Internet to get more insight in one or another topic to understand it completly, but as usual Packt ebooks are great to start with a new technical area, but experts needs to read something else.

Well structured guide book to android game development

This book is well structured and examples are explained quite well so that I could continue on with existing examples in the later chapters so you can expand on them. It include all items of a game development and it is good to a fresh man who has the programming foundation but new to game development.It is a good choice for you if you are interested in Android game development with Unity.

Basically a Second Edition, updated for Unity 5

SImilar to the Author's previous work on Unity Android, this version offers an expanded take on using Android and Unity3d. Using the latest Unity 5, game development for android just became more "free" in the sense that Unity 5's features between the Personal edition and the Pro edition are very much similar now. I haven't finished the book yet, but an immediate issue is that the code files for this version are not present or downloadable.
