History of US Light Tanks

This In Action series books gives you a little of the history of US light tanks prior to WW2. The M-2, M-3, M-5 and even the M-24 are shown in this 48 page book. There are also 2 pages of color plates to show the camoflage schemes used.

The b&w photos show the tanks in all sorts of weather & terrain. These light tanks were out gunned and out armored in Europe, but good in the Pacific. Each tank got a little better than the previous one, culminating in the M-24 Chaffee light tank, which was a whole new design. Nice bonus to have it added here. There are also data charts to show the penetration power of the 37mm gun and statistics on each tank's height, weight, armor.

I would not pay the $42.00 asking price for a new book (as of this writing), but picking it up used as I did, or waiting for it to be re-published are options. Great for modelers or those starting out with an interest in armored warfare. These light tanks were good for scouting or secondary theaters, this book shows that very well.

First published in 1983, this lyrical novel, superficially straightforward but full of stories within stories, first brought Bernard MacLaverty's work to public attention. In the novel, a young Irish Republican Army operative who wants to break the cycle of violence seeks out a woman whose Ulster policeman husband he helped to murder. As their relationship grows, so do Cal's guilt and sorrow, until, in the end, he is forced to make a sacrifice of himself in order to gain redemption. Rich in ideas and history, this book helps us understand the situation in Northern Ireland--which "is not just there," MacLaverty has remarked, "as a colorful background."

Simple but elegant.....

I've had this book on my shelves for almost fifteen years, if you can believe it, but never got around to reading it until this week. Now I can't figure out why it took me so long to open it.
"Cal" describes the "troubles" in Northern Ireland in a simple yet elegant manner, with a bare minimum of explicit violence and gore. Most of the violence is implied - the two exceptions being the story of how Marcella Morton became a widow, and what at first glance seems to be a rather pointless episode concerning a land mine and a cow. It seemed pointless, that is, until you read further and discovered exactly how the land mine came to be there.
While the violence is at a minimum, the thoughts, feelings, and philosophies of each side are explored quite thoroughly for such a small book. And while I personally found both points of view quite repellent, I will say that I believed that the characters in this book had these beliefs, and that they were extremely passionate regarding them.
The book is also an interesting psychological study, at least as far as Cal McCluskey (the main character) is concerned. With the help of Marcella, the woman he comes to love, it seems that he is growing up, and coming to realize that there's a lot more out in the world than just Catholics & Protestants fighting and killing each other - but his past will ultimately work against him and nullify all the good that Marcella has done for him - because he was the driver of the car containing the man that killed her husband.
A touching, sad, and very important book.

Unexpectedly haunting.

This book sat on my bookshelf for 10 years before I finally read it--I'd picked it up in a book sale way back and thought it looked interesting. Don't know why I waited so long to read it, but now that I have, I can't shake it. Its story is deceptively simple, but somehow its images haunt the mind long after reading. I guess it's the timelessness of it themes--violence (unfortunately) and love--because though the book was published in 1983 and the story itself, from hints in the book, I think is set about ten years before that, it obviously still resonates with readers in 1999. I wanted the story to go on, to find out if Cal survived his redemption.

A Brutal Tale

Bernard MacLaverty's Cal is perhaps on of the saddest books of the last 20 years. The story of a young Catholic man in Northern Ireland, it slowly but surely tears your heart out.
Cal is an unemployed young man who has very tenuous ties to the IRA. He begins to fall for the widow of one of his group's victims as he tries to break free from the IRA's clutches. All the while he is forced to bear the prejudices of his Protestant neighbors.
MacLaverty skillfully writes the tale. He never fools you about how the story will end but none the less he manages to make the reader invest some emotion in Cal so that when the inevitable comes you are just wiped out.
This is a wonderful piece of modern Irish literature.

What a great book! It covers Conventional X-Ray, CT, MRI, Ultrasound, and Sciatigraphy and discusses which is preferred in certain situations. The pictures are clear and demonstrate abnormalities really well.

You Don't Have to be a Teenager to Enjoy this Book!

I was literally transported back to age 14 when the rights of passage between childhood and adulthood were marked by success and failure in a competitive setting. "Stepping Up" was a book I could not put down. There is a little of Ernie Dolan in all of us. The author obviously knows his hoops and the basketball action is so real I was reminded of the "words eye view" that only the maestro Chick Hearn could deliver. It is even more difficult to convey the action in written form than verbal form. Mark Fink is a fabulous writer, who definitely gets it, delivers and has "stepped up" big time.

But I'll be kind and take it from the point of view of a middle school-aged boy who loves basketball and hates reading, loves large font and hates reading, and loves happy endings and hates reading. From that point of view, this is a 3-pointer instead of a 3-star-er. And it hits from well outside the arc, too.

For one, it's about two best friends who go to a basketball camp where a near-tragedy unfolds endangering lives and NO PARENTS ARE CONTACTED. The boys are 14, so I guess you'd expect as much, right? (JK, as they say.) As for happy endings, Mark Fink does not settle for one -- he runs up the score by taking our protagonist seven years into the future for even more good news. Whew! One can dream, I guess, and sometimes books are the medium for that dreaming.

All that said, I'll praise the book on two counts especially: As with John Coy, you get some easily-read but technically-accurate description of game action. A lot of boys speak that language. The other highlight is the humor. Fink hits the right note in back-and-forth badinage, and I found myself chuckling at some of the one-liners. Better yet, some of it is put-down humor. Now there's a writer who knows his audience.

For its demographic, STEPPING UP is a wise purchase. It's fairly clean with only one or two mild profanities. Beyond that (and under its bridge), the book is about as middle reader-friendly as you're going to get and may even appeal to the struggling reader in high school. Keeping my inner cynic at arms length, then, I'd say not bad -- not bad at all.

Great book for middle school boys!

Ernie and his best friend Mike go to summer camp every year, and this year, Mike chooses basketball camp. Ernie's okay with that until one of the other campers, Rick Craig, gives him a hard time about his game and about his stuttering, saddling him with the nickname "Choke". Mike excels in basketball and gets along with the other boys well, while Ernie struggles. I loved this paragraph (page 51): Life is not fair if an idiot like Craig can be so popular. I wonder what it's like to be the guy everyone respects and wants to hang with. Just once, I'd like to be that guy."

Ernie gets his chance after Mike and Rick make some bad decisions and Ernie saves them from a fire. Ernie rockets to popularity, but as with every element in this book, this rise is believable, and Ernie's reaction to it seems true-to-life. Once again, Mr. Fink nails the teen-age voice, describes the angst Ernie feels at a variety of situations with pitch-perfect detail, AND adds basketball plays to the mix. Exactly what I want.
