Allegorical Play in the Old French Motet: The Sacred and the Profane in Thirteenth-Century Polyphony (Figurae: Reading Medieval Culture)

The motet began as a form of sacred vocal music in several parts; a cantus firmus or tenor, drawn from sacred Latin chant, served as a foundation for one or more upper voices. The French motet was a well-established form by the middle of the thirteenth century, as were bilingual motets that combined at least one French and one Latin text among the upper voices.

Though some attention is paid to melodic structure and the relationship between text and music, this book focuses on the literary artistry of the texts of French and bilingual motets, notably the special feature of motets that distinguished them from other medieval lyric forms: the phenomenon of polytextuality. The author analyzes both the interaction of the texts within a motet (when there is more than one texted voice) and the relationship between the texted voice(s) and the tenor.

Although some French motets employ vernacular refrains as tenors, the vast majority use Latin tenors, thus maintaining an explicit tie to the liturgical origins of the genre. This presence of sacred and profane elements within a single motet presents an interpretive dilemma that the author suggests can be resolved through an allegorical or parodic reading; indeed, she argues that the tension between allegory and parody is an essential feature of the French motet.

The book examines the creative juxtaposition of sacred tenors and vernacular lyric motifs, and the resulting interplay of allegorical and parodic meanings, focusing in particular on the female persona as object of desire and as desiring subject, and on the motives of the separation and reunion of lovers. The author's analysis also discusses the links between the French motet and the secular lyric, the allegorization of love poetry in sermons and mystical texts, sacred parody, and the playful use of liturgical and biblical citations in erotic poetry.

Review

"This is the most comprehensive guide to the instruments of the woodwind family yet available for performers, conductors, and teachers. It covers all aspects of performance from classical to jazz, from intonation to reed adjustment, from technique to timbre-its all here. Logically organized, it contains two important sections for each instrument: common technical faults and corrections and common problems, causes, and solutions. A must reference."--Edward P. Asmus, Associate Dean, Frost School of Music at the University of Miami

"This is a marvelous new resource for anyone who teaches or plays woodwind instruments. Performance problems are clearly identified, and accurate, immediate solutions are offered. This is a 'Must Have' book for the most experienced educator to the first-year teacher."--James Kurschner, Director of Bands, Normandale College

A must read for instrumental music teachers and students
By Jay W
This is an outstanding work that I am using as a college textbook for a class on Woodwind Techniques. The information is thorough, accurate, practical and well organized. It goes into enough detail on each woodwind instrument, but not so much that you get bogged down in rhetoric. Congratulations to the authors on publishing a book that has countless uses for teachers at all levels. I just wish something like this was around when I was in college.

If you're a woodwind tutor, a music educator or a junior band conductor you need this book!
By Amazon Customer
This is an excellent resource for any woodwind tutor that finds him or herself tutoring something other than their main instrument. It could also be useful for music educators and/or new junior/training band conductors who are looking for something to help develop an understanding of the general characteristics of how woodwind instruments 'behave' (because, as we all know, in a lot of cases they don't!!).

Literature & Existentialism, by Jean-Paul Sartre

In a probing philosophical exploration of the act of literary creation, Sartre asks: “What is writing?,” “Why write?,” and “For whom does one write?”

After discussing existentialism as it pertains to art, human emotions, and psychology, French existentialist philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre turns the question of existentialism to the subject of literature by stating that he wishes to “examine the art of writing without prejudice.” Sartre eschews the idea of artists and writers comparing their works of art to one another; instead, he argues, “they exist by themselves.”Tying into his thoughts on literature, Sartre additionally delves into Marxist politics, the intellectual labor of the writer, the individual reader, and the reading public.

for example a novel like “Season of Migration to the North” by the Sudanese ...
By Glenn Russell
Twentieth century French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre maintained one value supreme above all others – freedom. This being the case, is it any surprise Sartre places freedom front and center when addressing literature’s connection with existentialism? Below are quotes from the second of this three part book, a part entitled ‘Why Write?” along with my comments:

“With each of our acts the world reveals a new face.” ---------- By this statement Sartre emphasizes a prime reason for artistic creation: the need artists and writers have to feel they are essential in relationship to the world, that is, through their writing or painting the world is revealed in unique and important ways. Literature places a distinctively human stamp on the world and with each new painting or book another valuable, vital stamp is added. I think we can all agree the world would be smaller and poorer without, to name just several, Virginia Woolf and Leo Tolstoy, R. K. Narayan and Raymond Chandler, Anne Tyler, Philip K. Dick and Shusaku Endo.

“It is the conjoint effort of author and reader which brings upon the scene that concrete and imaginary object which is the work of the mind. There is no art except for and by others. Raskolnikov’s waiting is my waiting which I lend him. Without this impatience of the reader he would remain only a collection of signs.” ---------- I really appreciate Sartre on this point: readers awaken the words and sentences on the page, inventing and completing characters and scenes with their own feelings, emotions, ideas, intuitions and past experiences. Thusly, the work of art is rounded out, made whole and complete by a community of readers. Harry Haller receives a new, more expanded life each time I reread Hesse’s novel “Steppenwolf”.

“Thus, for the reader, all is to do and all is already done; the work exists only at the exact level of his capacities; while he reads and creates, he knows that he can always go further in his reading, can always create more profoundly, and thus the work seems to him as inexhaustible and opaque as things.” ---------- Has anybody ever reached the bottommost level of Robert Musil’s “The Man Without Qualities”? I suspect a reader could spend an entire lifetime rereading this novel and discover new, deeper dimensions and meaning with each successive study. There are a number of novels I have reread multiple times, “The Stranger” and “Siddhartha” come immediately to mind and this has certainly been my experience – I have never reached the bottom; there is always more to learn and appreciate.

“And since this directed creation is an absolute beginning, it is therefore brought about by the freedom of the reader, and by what is purest in that freedom. Thus, the writer appeals to the reader’s freedom to collaborate in the production of his work. The book does not serve me freedom, it requires it.” ---------- Sartre underscores how we are required to bring our freedom to our reading. On important aspect of freedom is openness of mind. If we find ourselves disinclined to read a novel by an author with a different sexual orientation or cultural background then ourselves, for example a novel like “Season of Migration to the North” by the Sudanese author Tayeb Salih where he explores cultural confrontation and racism, we might want to reflect on exactly how open-minded and free we really are.

“The characteristic of aesthetic consciousness is to be a belief by means of an engagement, by oath, a belief sustained by fidelity in one’s self and to the author, a perpetually renewed choice to believe. I can awaken at every moment, as I know it: but I do not want to: reading is a free dream.” ---------- Reading is a generosity, a giving oneself completely to a character and story, a gift to the writer. We can have mixed feeling reading an unsettling work, say a story of a child experiencing the horrors of war in a novel like Jerzy Kosinski’s “The Painted Bird” or a Thomas Ligotti tale of terror, but we keep turning the pages, keeping our free dream alive since we value our readerly commitment and engagement.

“The work can be defined as an imaginary presentation of the world insofar as it demands human freedom. The result of which is that there is no “gloomy literature”, since, however dark may be the colors in which one paints the world, he paints it only so that free men may feel their freedom as they face it. Above all, the unique point of view from which the author can present the world to those freedoms whose concurrence he wishes to bring about is that of a world to be impregnated always with more freedom. ---------- Is there ever enough freedom in the world? Sartre thinks there is always room for more freedom – thus, more literature, more books.

Final note: I have cited works of fiction since, for the most part, Sartre uses fiction as examples throughout his book (Sartre famously disliked poetry). However, when he speaks of literature, not only is Sartre referring to novels and stories but other types of creative writing such as poetry, plays, essays and, yes, reviews.

Electricity and Magnetism, by Dr. Munir H. Nayfeh, Dr. Morton K. Brussel

This outstanding text for a two-semester course is geared toward physics undergraduates who have completed a basic first-year physics course. The coherent treatment offers several notable features, including 300 detailed examples at various levels of difficulty, a self-contained chapter on vector algebra, and a single chapter devoted to radiation that cites interrelationships between various analysis methods.
Starting with chapters on vector analysis and electrostatics, the text covers electrostatic boundary value problems, formal and microscopic theories of dielectric electrostatics and of magnetism and matter, electrostatic energy, steady currents, and induction. Additional topics include magnetic energy, circuits with nonsteady currents, Maxwell's equations, radiation, electromagnetic boundary value problems, and the special theory of relativity. Exercises appear at the end of each chapter and answers to odd-numbered problems are included in one of several helpful appendixes.

A must-have book.
By A Customer
Most people don't know this book exists, and I wish I had known about it when I was an undergraduate, but at least I have it in my library now! I originally tracked down a used copy of this out of print book because the author (Nayfeh) happened to be the professor of the electrodynamics class I took in grad school. Copies of this book can be difficult to find, but are well worth the effort.
The book is a treasure trove of solved elecrodynamics problems. It has 300 worked examples, and half of the problems have answers to them in the back of the book. The book also covers some subjects that are neglected in Griffiths, such as magnetic scalar potential (something Griffiths makes no use of, but can be a real life saver), and magnetic circuits.
All in all I'd say that this book is slightly more rigorous than Griffiths, but nowhere near the level of the infamous Jackson's textbook.
Out of all the textbooks I've bought over the years this one was by far one of the best purchases I've made. It was worth every dollar I paid for it. Nayfeh told us that he and his coauthor were working on a new edition, I wish they hurry up and get it to the printing press.

A Lost Treasure
By D. Cassell
Finding a copy of this book is equivalent to Indiana Jones finding a long lost treasure. It might also sell for a small fortune on the black market or Amazon as well. Having found a copy myself, really did helped me survive my undergraduate electromagnetism class. What makes the book so brilliant is all the worked examples (300 to be exact), and their clear explanations. The only draw back sometimes is the notation, as the symbols used sometimes are different from say what one would find in say Griffiths' Introduction to Electrodynamics. One example would be Phi, as it's is used for electric potential instead of electric flux. But this really isn't a problem, as one can always tell from the context what is meant. Below is the chapter outline,
Vector Analysis
Electrostatics
Electrostatic Boundary Value Problems
Formal Theory of Dielectric Electrostatics
The Microscopic Theory of Dielectrics
Electrostatic Energy
Steady Currents
Magnetism of Steady Currents
Formal Theory of Magnetism and Matter
The Microscopic Theory of Magnetism
Induction
Magnetic Energy
Circuits with Nonsteady Currents
Maxwell's Equations
Radiation
Electromagnetic Boundary Value Problems
The Special Theory of Relativity.
The book also includes
Appendix I: System of Units
Appendix II: Divergence, Curl, Gradients, and Laplacian
Appendix III: Some Fundamental Constants of Physics
Appendix IV: Some SI Derived Units with Special Names.
Overall, great book. If it was still in print, I'd recommend it as the standard. It really is a must have reference for any physics library.

wonderful book
By S. S. H.
I wonder why people in US are not familiar with this book. This book is great, full of examples. It is translated to my language "Farsi" and almost all the students In Iran are using it as their best reference book. I like it so much. I have the Farsi one but i just purchased the English version to prepare myself in English.

WARNING: Amazon is commingling reviews
By Brian's Dad
First of all, great book. Been writing professionally for 20 years, and I still use this book occasionally.

WARNING on REVIEWS: Amazon is using the same customer reviews for "The Elements of Style, Fourth Edition" by Strunk and White (1999) and "The Elements of Style - the Original Edition" by Strunk (without White) (1920), re-published September 2007.

Since the republication of Strunk's original work was released in September 2007, all reviews before that date pertain to "Strunk & White." Any review after that date, unless clearly indicated, could pertain to either book.

The books are markedly different, but Amazon is using the same customer reviews for both.

Essential Writer's Tool.
By Christopher B. Jonnes
When I write a book I use only a handful of reference tools: dictionary, thesaurus, Gregg's Reference Handbook, Writers Market, and the Elements of Style. Strunk and White is a wonderfully-written, extraordinarily concise tool that pays homage to classic high-end English. It takes language insight to make this prediction in 1979: "By the time this paragraph makes print, uptight... rap, dude, vibes, copout, and funky will be the words of yesteryear." The book begins with eleven "Elementary Rules of Usage," and then continues with eleven more "Elementary Rules of Composition," and eleven "Matters of Form." Each is presented as a brief statement followed by another sentence or two of explanation and a few clarifying examples. This amazing compilation fills only thirty-eight pages, yet covers ninety percent of good writing fundamentals. My favorite section is Chapter IV, a twenty-seven-page, alphabetical listing of commonly misused words and expressions. Here's a trade secret: when my manuscript is "done," I then turn to this chapter and use my word processor's Find function to study every instance of all these problematic words and phrases. I never fail to find errors this way. Many great writers are so only because they've learned to make use of the best available tools. The end of the book contains an essay on "An Approach to Style" with a list of twenty-one "Reminders." Those who fight the apparently-natural tendency to go against these recommendations succeed as writers. Those who don't, fail. It's that simple. The single drawback of The Elements of Style is that it's too concise; it does not stand alone as an all-encompassing tutorial or reference guide. Many readers will seek other sources for more in-depth explanation of style elements. Despite that, it easily replaces ten pounds of other reference material. --Christopher Bonn Jonnes, author of Wake Up Dead.

"Writing is hard, even for authors who do it all the time."
By E. Bukowsky
This jazzy edition of the classic "The Elements of Style," by Strunk and White, features stylized, exuberant, riotously colorful, and often whimsical illustrations by Maira Kalman. In addition, a few references have been changed to make the book more relevant. For instance, in the earlier edition, the authors cautioned against the use of acronyms with this example: "Not everyone knows that SALT means Strategic Arms Limitation Talks." The new edition states, "Not everyone knows that MADD means Mothers Against Drunk Driving." In the section on slang, Strunk and White advised writers to use standard language and avoid such words as "uptight, groovy, rap, hangup, vibes, copout, and dig." In the new edition, examples of slang are "psyched, nerd, ripoff, dude, geek, and funky." Strunk and White advocated "using scissors on the manuscript, cutting it to pieces and fitting the pieces together in a better order." In the current edition, writers are encouraged to use a word processor to move text from place to place.

Is a new edition of this handbook really necessary? I believe that it is, not only because of the archaic references that needed updating, but also because today's younger writers need visual stimulation and pizazz to capture their attention; this edition has both. Strunk and White's words of wisdom are, for the most part, reprinted as they appeared in earlier editions. The authors discuss such topics as elementary rules of usage, principles of composition and form, words commnonly misused, and tips on how to develop an effective and natural style. Even experienced writers would do well to review "The Elements of Style" now and then to remind them of the importance of clarity, brevity, simplicity, and consistency.
