Not clear for whom this book might be useful

First, let me say that generally I love Esposito's books and articles. His book on AJAX in Microsoft was the best on the topic. So, I expected a lot and ended up quite disappointed.

I am technical manager, and my developers have experience with MVC 1. We are all "fan-boys" MVC and for me it is the first time I actually enjoy development in Microsoft technologies.

Now, about the book. Who is this book for? The new MVC developers? It doesn't have any examples that one can build upon and learn the skills. For experienced developers? It doesn't go into the advanced implementation solutions; and the philosophy behind MVC only takes you so far. It goes to great (I would say, excruciating) details into what is the foundation of MVC design - but misses what *is* actually the MVC design. For example, the chapter on the controllers lists the role of controllers, motivation behind them, and anatomy of them. It also lists the interfaces that controllers implement. The bottom line - it convinced me what a great thing a controller is, but gave very little guidance how to use it!

It may be helpful for the instructors that can use some information in the classes. Or, it is very useful if you plan to join Scott Guthrie's team and develop MVC 3. But for real-world developers, architects, or technical managers - the value is questionable.

Skip This Book, Seriously

I rarely write negative reviews, but I have to say, this book is not good. I'm a relatively seasoned Web Forms developer, having spent the last eight years or so, off and on, developing apps in ASP.NET, and I was looking to this book to introduce me to ASP.NET MVC. As it stands, I'm 100 pages into the book, and I've yet to be presented with a single practical example; the author's spent all this time (seriously, no exaggeration -- the first 100 pages) trying to explain to me that yes, ASP.NET MVC is different from Web Forms -- not better, just different -- and that it extends the existing ASP.NET runtime in ways I couldn't care less about at this point. Thus far, we haven't created a single project, no File > New, no examples, nothing. I'm extremely frustrated and disappointed at this purchase, which sucks, because I generally give programming books the benefit of the doubt.

I actually can't think of a single brand of developer this book would be good for. If you're a seasoned Web Forms dev, as I am, you're going to find this stuff extremely tedious, as I have. If you're new to ASP.NET, there's so much jargon and page-filling fluff baked into the first hundred pages that you'll almost surely find yourself completely baffled as to what you're supposed to do with all this information relating to the mechanics of the IIS runtime and HttpHandlers and Modules and Contexts when all you want to do is build a flippin' HelloWorld and then dig deeper into how it works later. I don't want to be harsh, because I realize writers have to make a living, but seriously, do yourself a favor, save your money and skip this book. I don't have an alternative to recommend, yet, but I know one thing -- I'll be returning this one first thing in the morning.

Lots of information, and yet not actually useful

There's a lot of text here about how to switch from traditional asp.net to asp.net mvc and why you should switch. A *lot*. If you're not trying to decide whether or not to switch, that will not be too helpful.

I tend to read books once through, then use them as a reference guide. With this book, despite having read through once, I still don't understand a lot of the basic concepts involved and how to actually connect them to make an app. While reading it I thought I was getting that information, but as I go to apply it I'm finding that there are gaps in my knowledge that the book isn't filling in. You also won't be able to use it as a reference guide - having had this book for a while and tried to use it as a reference, the information about any particular topic that I've tried to look up is either spread out in too many locations to be useful, or just not able to be found.

If you don't already understand how asp.net works independent of MVC, this book doesn't provide enough details about how asp.net works to help you out, so I wouldn't recommend it if you don't have that knowledge. (and it should be noted that this book explicitly states that it doesn't, so I'm not holding that against it.)

Having had this book around the office for about 2.5 months, I've given up on trying to use it and I'm going to look for another book.

One word: Butterfly .... ;)

This book is too hot to handle! Holy smokes, batman!
I was so eager to get started on this book! I needed to know who the mystery man was. What he would propose next. What kind of gift he would send JJ. There was so much mystery and suspense spewing out of this series, and I was ready to jump in head first.�
As much as I was set on Ash being the mystery man, I started to have some doubts. Roxy Sloane was so sly and smooth about her way of writing, that the details began to suggest other possibilities that made sense. This series held so much promise and intrigue from the start, and it keeps building with each chapter.�
Even if cliffhangers are a hard limit for you, I recommend this book and series with the highest intensity possible. There are so many captivating qualities and different elements to the book that will have you satisfied every which way.�
The prequel book left us on the edge of our seats with JJ being presented with a mysterious note and gift from an unknown sender...

Roxy Sloane Has Done It Again!

The Invitation: Surrender offers Justine Jenkins a chance to explore her deviant, sexual side – a side that readers can tell from the prequel is ready and willing to come out and play. But the game that JJ’s been invited to take part in has its own set of rules – ones that she has no control over, but it seems that she’s willing to give up control if her mystery man makes good on his promise to take her to the pinnacle of ecstasy, which he does so effortlessly on several occasions. But these delicious diversions are not the only thing Justine has to contend with while on her business trip to New York; she’s lead attorney in a copyright infringement lawsuit that could put her at the top of the food ladder in her firm, so she has to make sure she’s at the top of her game, but when her past walks into her present and sits on the opposing side of the table, looking every bit as drop dead gorgeous as he was three years ago, her body and mind are torn in how to proceed. Does she continue to accept the invitations from her mystery man, surrendering to the sexual awakening he offers her, or will her dormant feelings for Ashton Pierce and their unfinished business force JJ to play an even more dangerous game – one that includes her heart?

Roxy Sloane is one hell of a writer! Her words and her characters draw readers in from page 1 and keep us reading until all is revealed. Justine is in a precarious position in this book, and Roxy does a great job of exploring her conflicting feelings. JJ doesn’t want to give up her mystery man and what he does for her; she’s finally allowing herself to give up control – something that she always felt necessary to have, and this has allowed her to grow not only as a person but as a sexual woman as well, but JJ can’t deny that Ash does something for her that no other man does; he has her heart even if he destroyed it three years ago when he left without a word. So the question that continues to be posed as Justine accepts the mysterious invitations from her lover and spends time with Ashton outside of the board room, does she surrender with only her body or does she surrender her heart as well, not knowing if in the end, Ash will love her back?

I, for one, will be impatiently waiting for The Invitation: Release. The title itself has so many connotative meanings that could apply to Justine’s current situation, especially with the ending of Surrender. One thing’s for certain, though, Roxy Sloane is going to take us on one hell of a sexy, mysterious ride where the true nature of the characters and how they will end up will slowly and painstakingly be revealed in typical Roxy Sloane fashion;)

Thomas Troward lays out, in a very systematic way, the theory and practice to mental science. I have purchased over 20 of this title and gave them away after reading them. I am never tired of his writings.

Excellent Book

This is a great book on mental science and the art of manifestation, but it must be studied to be understood. It is not a light read, so take your time with each chapter and passage. It is profound and very enlightening.

Great book if you love whisky

I'm a new whisky lover and recently joined a whisky club (people contribute a bottle and pay some dues). I bought this book to share with the other members and everyone seemed to enjoy it. Each article has a short story about the origin and nature of the whisky as well as some tasting notes. I love that I can read a little background information about the whiskies I'm trying out. Whiskies are a lot like people -- each have their own stories and some of them are fascinating to downright bizarre. And this book is not limited to only single-malt scotches either. You will find reviews for whisky and bourbons from around the globe. In my experience, I've really enjoyed branching out to regions not known for whisky production as they produce some great flavours.

Keep in mind that this is not a ratings guide like Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2012 although it does have some basic tasting notes. You will also not find prices either (but it does have a link to the distillery's website for each whisky). So you may become excited about a particular whisky only to find that it is out of your price range.

If you are new to whisky, then I suggest reading some random pages. You will learn a lot. If you like to have whisky tastings, buy this book and place it next to the bottles. Because talking about whisky is half the fun of drinking them!

Great gift for a fellow whisky lover. This whiskey "compendium" is not so much a guide of whiskies you should check out in your lifetime as the title suggests. Instead, it's more like a collection of every whisky that has every been created with detailed notes on each whisky's history, flavor, and drinking suggestions. The book includes multiple ages of many bottles, and special editions, many of which an average connoisseur will never get their hands on. Even so, it's cool to have an enourmous checklist, and be able to measure your notes with the "professionals.'"

I bought this book with the intentions of taking the CAPM test and using this book for a review. I studied and took the test. Not one question from in the book was on the test. Not worth the money. I'd choose another book if you want any hope of passing the test. My college book on Project Management had more useful information in it that this book did.

I was so looking forward to receiving this book. I was sorely disappointed. I'm sure some of the information presented was cutting edge 10, 15, 20 years ago. On top of the out dated info, there was some that was just incorrect. If you are simply looking for a book on historic investigative concepts and technology, then you may be pleased. I was not.

Love the Laws of Love

There is something about the books coming out of Prentiss Productions. Each book I read seems to evoke growth, awareness, and happiness. To create and maintain this type of perspective to share with the world is a true gift. I am an avid reader, but few writers elevate my consciousness and level of overall happiness. Each book provides life lessons ripe for adoption and bring a combination of joy and awe into my life. I found the passage Chris shared with his wife to be incredible. I sat down and wrote a letter to the love of my life about the love we will share. The book provided insight into what it takes to keep love alive. Thank you for sharing and providing assistance on my personal journey to forgive and appreciate the Dealbreakers of the past (mine and theirs). Thank you.
