Currently serving as a senior database administrator for Confio Software, Thomas has progressed through several roles in his career including programmer, analyst, and database administrator. Thomas holds a master of science degree in mathematics from Washington State University and is a member of the Usability Professionals Association. Thomas currently serves on the board of directors for the Professional Association for SQL Server (PASS), and is also a SQL Server "Most Valuable Professional". Great book for Juniors to Intermediate DBA's

I had to admit that I was (even though engrossed in the book) a little reluctant. After devouring the first few chapters and thinking to myself, "wow, I'm not the only person going through this and what a wonderful and simple way it was presented!" I knew this book was a keeper. Thomas goes through a wide variety of topics, from being an accidental DBA and what to do or stepping into the office as a DBA for the first time and getting a handle on your environment to living healthy and being on call and even giving some technical advice in there. He goes through many examples and his simple writing style (and amazingly funny humor) is a treat.
One of my favorite chapters was chapter 7 "Where is the buffet?" which went through some items such as unconscious eating, things that I had never thought about but once in the light realised there were things I could do to be healthier and better at my current position. There are great tidbits throughout the book on all areas from other big names in the DBA world which add to the spice of the book!
There are other chapters like Chapter 3 "Some Basics" which are more technical but still delivered with great simplicity. This isn't a bad thing as the reader has an easier time digesting the information given to them with real world examples and pitfalls that if not in the current situation might not be known. Thomas really does a great job through the book to keep the reading, even in these technical instances very light so that the reader doesn't feel bogged down with technical terms and complex models while retaining the information needed.
Overall, for the audience that this book was written, I would give it a 5/5. I greatly enjoyed my time reading this from the first page and had a hard time putting it down until the end!

A smooth read and great in breadth learning experience for beginners

This book is not long manual but sometimes it gives feeling that I am reading Book On Line. This is good in one way as it is provides the details and information with easy and familiar medium, however sometime that lacks the freshness. I really enjoy the approach author for this, it is very familiar.
I recommend this book for all those who are looking for quick start and wants to get working solution in very little time.

Much of the info isn't very useful to me

Much of the info isn't very useful to me, but that's mostly because I'm not a real DBA - I bought the book because my new job has some DBA responsibilities (restoring databases and such). Even if I were a DBA, I still wouldn't care for the diet and lifestyle tips here. I don't read books like this for that info -- I have other trusted authorities I go to for that. I was surprised to find headings like "Food is a Drug" and tips like, "Fill your stomach with water before a meal." It's not well-informed advice and take just filler.
Overall, I'm glad I read it - it gave me some good info on a DBA's responsibilities.
