Right And Reason: Ethics in Theory and Practice, by Austin Fagothey

Ethics both in theory and practice. Phrased in non-technical language, Right and Reason is a thoroughly competent book in the philosophy of Ethics, which gives the science of morality from the Aristotelian-Thomistic, common-sense school of thought--which is none other than the Perennial Philosophy of the Ages, the philosophy outside of which one's positions quickly become absurd and all reasoning ends up in dead-ends. Classic Catholic Clarity
By John McConnell
Great book. I enjoyed this book on the Thomistic philosophy of Ethics and highly commend it. I've read much philosophy and wish I'd encountered this book a long time ago - it would have saved me much time and helped me mentally organize and catalog the practical applications of Aristotelian philosophy. Right and Reason provides considerable Roman Catholic foundational knowledge in plain well-organized prose. Fr. Fagothey delivers a superbly clear and excellently written analysis of Thomistic philosophy, starting with first principles. As the author notes at the outset, the three axioms of Thomistic philosophy are 1. there is a God, 2. we each have an immortal soul, and 3. we each have free will. This is the philosophical tripod on which Thomism is based.

The author spends little time examining other systems (Epicureanism, Stoicism, Utilitarianism, etc) focusing primarily on elaborating and explaining Thomism. As this book was written during the golden age of capitalism (~1950-1970), the author's cheerleading for capitalism and critique of Marxist predictions of concentrated patrician wealth in capitalist systems seem like wishful thinking.

Chapter headings include The Good, Happiness, Pursuit of Happiness, Voluntariness, Morality, Truthfulness, Society, Communism and Socialism, War, and Peace. There is a good summary at the end of each chapter along with a list of books addressing points raised during the chapter. I highly commend this book to anyone interested in clear thinking and clear presentation of both Ethics and Thomism. See also The critique of poor reason, A Tour of The Summa, Aristotelian Logic (Literature), and Handbook of Moral Theology.

The textbook on natural law back in the day...
By Bobby Bambino
... and it still should be today! This book builds up natural law from first principles. Rather than beginning by diving into "applied ethics", the book starts by outlining some of the basic Aristotelian-Thomistic metaphysics that underlay the natural law. Drawing heavily from Aquinas' summa, the author begins by asking "what is the good? does man have a final ends? is there only one for everyone? do we all have the same final ends?" etc. With this foundation laid, we can see that the natural law is defined in terms man achieving his final ends which is happiness, which is of course the Beatific vision. After establishing that man has exactly one final ends which is the same for every man, the author discusses many general principles that arise such as the principle of double effect and formal vs material cooperation with evil. Finally, the author begins to apply ethics to concrete situations. He discusses life issues, the state, war, and many other applications of natural law that are not often considered in books on ethics. Even though the book is around 600 pages, it is a very easy read. There are about 35 chapters, each of which can be read in a single sitting, so that one can finish the book in about a month. The author is extremely clear in his writing. This is a great introduction to the natural law via the thought of Aquinas and Aristotle.
