Living in the Wilds isn't any picnic, but I thought I had a handle on things: avoid the beasts and I won't get eaten, avoid the waterways and the pirates won't kill me, and stab every Dark Walker I see.
That was before I found out Tiffy's friends were real and back when I’d never heard of the Skinners. Now my magic is on the fritz, and people are disappearing. Dax doesn't want me to kill any Dark Walkers, and avoiding the beasts is impossible when I live with one. Amidst all this, I've become the most wanted woman around.

Loved The Hunt!
By Dawskimo
The Hunt is the second installment in The Wilds series by Donna Augustine, and what a hunt it is! This novel picks up where The Wilds left off, Dahlia is in the homestead, trying to determine her place in the new world order, concerned about her safety and the well-being of her new family, knowing that she is a target in this post-apocalyptic civilization. In this book Dahlia contends with old enemies and new while she learns to navigate life in the Wilds.
What I loved about this book was Dahlia’s growth. Still young and nave to the world outside of the asylum, she is learning more about herself, her strengths, her weaknesses – and acceptance of all of these. She is a fun protagonist full of determination, angst, and self-doubt all rolled up into one hot mess. I eagerly await the next book in this series.

Possible spoilers

I read the first book in The Wilds series and thought it wasn't bad: a worldview that I haven't encountered before and a fairly interesting situation for the main character. While the worldview continues in this second book, the situation has become significantly less interesting. Augustine can't write action to save her life. It can take 6 pages to get through a conversation about leaving the safe compound to investigate Dal's enemies, but fight scenes are over in 2 paragraphs. And there's way too much mystery. It makes sense for all the characters to have trust issues, but by giving nothing but blank walls the author doesn't do a lot to engage readers. The worst part is that the plot is incredibly thin: Dal, the last surviving Plaguer in a post-apocalypse world, is being desperately sought by creatures who have infiltrated humanity. We learn in The Hunt that she has a lot of magic. And that's it. At the end of book 1 she was told she was the "key", but there's no sign of what that means, and most of this book is taken up with high-schoolish relationship issues. While that may be fine for a young adult audience, it's not interesting for the rest of us.

Excellent Read
By Kimberly Johnson
I read a lot of books. Let's just say I've had kindle unlimited three days and have devoured this as my seventh book maybe more I could have lost count. Some books you have to struggle to get through the details to get to juicy dialogue. I have read a couple on kindle unlimited and stopped after a couple chapters because they were work to read. A lot of series have build up explaining the world and characters which some times to me is a turn off in reading. This series I've read both back to back within the last ten hours. Mind you I have a 14 month old so it's in between child caring that I get to read. This story is so seamless with enriching characters, story telling, and world creating its decadent. I've loved this one so much I'm doing two things I have yet to do with my kindle unlimited account. The first is the huge desire to check out her other works to see if it is just her writing style which I hope is the case because she has so many others available I can read. And second write an actual review. I give the books I enjoy stars so that they get credit for keeping me entertained and working so hard on these novels, but this was such a cool concept with amazing story telling she deserved a review. I look forward to the future release of this series and will start the Keepers series next if my memory serves right from first glance the one I downloaded in conjunction with the first novel in this series. I don't leave many reviews so a stamp of approval from me means it definitely made an impression.
So here's some highlights if you're thinking of picking up this series:
-Hot guy/hero with issues (check)
-Strong heroine with issues (check)
-Cool back story in a post apocalyptic world (check)
-Rich characters and character relationships (check)
-Strong plot with twists throughout to keep you hooked (check)
-Told from the female view which I like with enough inference concerning other characters motives that the main character may not even be aware of (check)
-Sexual tension (it is definitely YA as there has yet to be any strong sexual situations and any are inferred so to an adult it may be read between the lines but I doubt younger audiences would understand references. Reminds me of some more adult jokes in Disney movies. This is not to say there isn't mention of it so as a parent read what your children read first and decide what age is appropriate for you. As an adult I loved this series and would let my daughter as a teenager read it with no problem.) (it would have not bothered me to have sex scenes as I read romance novels, but I thought I'd add that to the review as some people I've read reviews of have issues with that) (check)
-Fantasy/scifi (loved this aspect so awesome) (check)
-Cool new take on werewolf concept (check)
-Magic
Too much to list. Must check out book 1 in series. I promise you will not be disappointed. If you have kindle unlimited you have nothing to lose, but I bet after chapter 1 you'll be hooked too.
Here's to the start of her other series. I can't wait.
Much love and happy reading.
PS to the author. Well done. I thoroughly enjoyed this and I hope you use this positive review to give you motivation during hard writing days. I've been there and hope this brings sunshine to a cloudy day.
In fact I'm going to social media to find your pages listed in your book to follow you so I can get updates on progress for future novels.
